All?  So far, you are the only leftist who has defended him.  Please direct me to the posts where rulemylife, Owner59, lucylastic, slvemike4u, DomYngBlk, or politesub53 defended Juan William's position and took NPR to task?

I`m not leftist but am glad to be thrown in with those names mentioned. As for free speech, I am all for it, however ludicrous it gets, even yours......[;)]

Edited to fix quotes.

You can have him.

But tell me Firm, how do you seriously defend his remarks?

He is afraid to board a plane with Muslim passengers, he says that other blacks are "ignorant, oversexed, and violent".

Are these views you support as well?

Oh see, you took 4 words out of context and they now have a completely different meaning.
He did NOT say other blacks are "ignorant, oversexed and violent".

What he said was he understood O'Reilly's grandmother's opinions because they came from what she saw and what she saw was what she knew.

"After watching all those racist, minstrel images of black people, I argued, she is right to buy into stereotypes of blacks as ignorant, oversexed and violent."

Context makes all the difference in the world.

There was no bigotry in his statement.

Uh..........if you go up to #32 you will find I posted the exact quote.

So how am I taking it out of context?

You can also read the link that contains his whole article, but apparently you did not bother reading the thread and probably only saw my post scrolling by and decided to offer your opinion.

I can see you completely missed what he was trying to say.

As far as the current "mistake".  He was on an OPINION show giving his OPINION.  Where is the problem?  He has a right to be dumb and paranoid.

NPR overreacted.  The better path for NPR would have been to open a dialog about why he felt that way on the air, in a series.  One of the things they do so well which is open a discussion and view a subject from different sides.

What your skipping over is the fact there are many people in this country who feel that way.  All they see are the videos of hijackings, beheadings,  militants running around with guns.  They form an opinion about Muslims from the only sources they see.  Much as he was speaking of understanding why some white people form those opinions of blacks when the only source they have is rap videos and gang violence.

So, you say he was "dumb and paranoid"  but then go on to defend him being "dumb and paranoid".

NPR got fed up.

Here's another selection from "The All-time Best of Juan Williams".

The Tipping Divide : NPR
A new study finds many waiters and waitresses feel that black Americans generally tip less than restaurant diners who are white.

The study, by a researcher at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, found that blacks tip on average 20 percent less than whites.

In addition, restaurant workers of all races dislike waiting on black people because they assume the tips will be less no matter how good the service. NPR's Juan Williams reports.

flcouple2009 -> RE: Juan Williams fired by NPR. (10/22/2010 5:00:36 AM)

Sure he has a right to be dumb and paranoid. Just as you have a right to your silliness here.

You didn't like the article on tipping?  So what.  Having had a lot of friends who are servers I've heard the story about how black customers don't tip long ago.  It's right there with the stories of old people who leave a dollar thinking they've gifted you a fortune.

You skipped over the real part of my post.  NPR handled this poorly.  There is a large portion of this country who feel the same way as Juan.  They could have handled this in a different way to help enlighten people rather than the over reach.

Oh, I'm sorry.

How silly of me not to know I was being silly by disagreeing with you.

But let's review where we are at so far.

It was perfectly reasonable of Juan to be afraid of being on an airplane with a Muslim, whites are being perfectly reasonable to stereotype blacks because of what they see on television, and waiters and waitresses are perfectly reasonable in not wanting to serve black people because they think they will be tipped less.

Is this really the argument you want to make?

flcouple2009 -> RE: Juan Williams fired by NPR. (10/22/2010 6:31:55 AM)

You've really gone over the edge haven't you.  I think we might need to get you hooked up with Hunk so you can take his meds.

Juan expressed his feelings.  They are his and this is still America he has a right to his thoughts and opinions.  What he didn't do was go on the air and tell everyone that they should be afraid of every Muslim they see and they shouldn't board a plane if they think there is one aboard.  He gave his opinion and an opinion based show.  He wasn't on the evening news stating we should be afraid of every Muslim walking the earth.

What NPR could have done was address the issue since there are many Americans who feel the same way.  Instead they over reached fired Juan and came across as elite left leaning hypocrites.

With the other topic, please go back and find where I stated it was OK to discriminate against anyone?

I've heard from a lot of friends I've had who are servers that black people don't tip well.  The study Juan cited in the story just reinforced what I've always heard.  Do servers try and steer those customers away from their areas?  Sure they do,  they want people who think will tip.  Do they sometimes give less service to the black customer than they do the other customers sitting around them?  Sure they do,  they give their time and attention to the people who they think are going to pay them.

Is it discrimination and racist?  Sometimes, but its just expectations of a poor tip gives poor service.  I can see how the black customers would see it as discrimination.  Does anyone think they are a bad tipper?

Sanity -> RE: Juan Williams fired by NPR. (10/22/2010 6:35:33 AM)

NPR needs to be defunded and they should lose their not-for-profit tax status. Currently donations to NPR and PBS are deductible and theres no reason to continue that, theyve proven time and again that they are cl;early a partisan left wing political organization.

mnottertail -> RE: Juan Williams fired by NPR. (10/22/2010 6:42:34 AM)

I would be for that, if the Chamber of Commerce pays back the original government funding with interest for their creation since they are clearly a partisan right wing lobbyist group.

flcouple2009 -> RE: Juan Williams fired by NPR. (10/22/2010 7:03:36 AM)

Yes absolutely Sanity is correct.

We all know Between the Lions, Sid the Science Kid, Word Girl, Nova, etc.. are all hard left leaning political propaganda.

Then again, I've never heard of anyone at the Chamber Of Commerce wish AIDS on Barack Obama.....or his family...such as this moron from PBS did...on air.

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5920144/nprs_nina_totenberg_jesse_helms_or.html

I'm no fan of Jesse Helms....but I'd not wish that disease on ANY human being. However....she was not fired.

Frankly I don't think NPR should be de-funded because it is clearly left-leaning. Just like leftists are free to not listen to conservatives on the airwaves....conservatives are free to do the same. As a conservative I am amazed that people on the right fear PBS....because if we are honest with ourselves, there are FAR more right-leaning talk shows on radio with a FAR larger audience than PBS...so we're not suffering in that department.

I think this was an act of sheer stupidity on PBS' part. Heads should roll at PBS......purely from a business point of view. It was a dumb decision and for that the people involved in making it should be fired. They shot themselves in the foot....

I support PBS monetarily for that very reason and will continue to do so. NOVA is one of the very best things television has to offer.

I do understand NPR's position...they try to report the news without a political bent. I know this because both conservatives and liberals think they are biased toward the other.

<snip>

Butch

Sorry to burst your bubble about NPR but they have, for all the decades I have been listening to them, been on the left side of the political spectrum. Only the very far left considers them biased towards conservatives This has been known in the industry for a long time. It was probably the most liberal when a former aide or campaign manager (sorry, I just don't remember which and am too short on time to go look it up) was the head of NPR. It actually did move more towards the middle after that and moved closest to the middle after the election after the Republicans took control of both houses of congress for the first time in 40 years. There seemed to be a general media shift to the right about that time as well.

I can say this from many many hours of listening to both Morning Edition (from when it started) and All Things Considered since I was in college. I will still listen to them if I get a chance and over all I enjoy those two programs. Saying it isn't so is like saying that President Obama didn't come out of a city and political party infamous for corruption and crime. You can say it all you want but that doesn't make it true. NPR is still on the liberal side of the political spectrum and the Democratic party of Chicago and Cook County still has more than one politician a year (on the average) go to jail on corruption charges.

Be well....

Malkinius

Opinion sections yes.But they tell the news striaght up.They offer all the alternative POVs,ask tough questions and don`t game the system to cheat, like fox.

Williams is a long time NPR contributor and not a lefty(like me) and wasn`t fired for his politics.

He was fired for saying something really stupid, really wrong(incorrect wrong) and really bigoted,on THEIR station.

Same reasons Jimmy the Greek and Rick Sanchez were fired.

Uhmmmm,  since when is the Bill O'Reilly show on NPR?  He made the statement while appearing on FOX.  Once again he gave an opinion on an opinion show, he wasn't on the evening news telling everyone not to get on a plane if they thought they saw a Muslim.

Sanchez was talking shit about his bosses live on the air.  That was just begging to be fired.

Jimmy the Greek was fired for being a being a stupid old drunk.

DomYngBlk -> RE: Juan Williams fired by NPR. (10/22/2010 8:15:50 AM)

1.  And the lefties wonder why Fox viewership has steadily increased over the last few years?

In reality FNC has not been gaining viewers steadily over the last few years and has been steadily losing viewers all year.
