BoiJen -> Something bothering me about certain republican goals...I'm just confused.... (11/3/2010 10:20:40 AM)

So I'm listening to certain Republican "goals"and some I can really jive with. Balance the budget, limit government power, maintain rights under the Constitution....all of this I can really go for.

What I don't get is how Republicans (because Democrats the I can tolerate listening to don't go spouting this stuff) can say they hope to limit government influence and control by deregulating the business sector but at the same turn scream about limiting individuals' rights by being invasive about people's personal business (who they marry, how they fuck, parental planning, etc). I mean, if governmental involvement is required by a societal situation, would impacting major influencing bodies like businesses take less money and less invasive efforts from the government than trying to control what every individual does in their own lives?

Is this like a big picture problem?

I just don't understand the reasoning behind it. I don't want to debate who's right or wrong, I want insight into the logical process that brings Republicans, as a whole, to this conclusion.

BoiJen, yeah, I could never figure that out about Republicans either! Could it be because they try to "pander" to the Holy Rollers?
I mean what would they care what someone does in the privacy of their own bedroom when they had a Senator looking for BJ's in an airport!
On the other hand why on God's green earth do Democrats think that "more government interfereance" in *anyone's* life is a good thing?
The Repubs need to tell the holy rollers to "STFU" if you want to be in our party." "You don't like it,....go join the Dems!"
That's another good thing about the Tea Partyers, they're pushing the holy rollers to the side. The holy rollers are behaving like muslims with that shit!
Ten percent of the population is "gay", or more correctly homosexual. That doesn't make them less or more human, it's just the way you guys were born. Maybe God is giving us a little test here, "BE KIND TO GAYS OR INTO THE FUCKING FRYING PAN YOU GO!"
At any rate, it's really none of the govt's business who *anyone* has sex with! (I like to watch though![:D])

Something that bothers me about the Republicans is how can you keep/expand tax cuts AND balance the budget?

That's an easy one...Stop spending money you don't have to spend...Duh

This country could easily cut 20% of the federal budget.

hlen5 -> RE: Something bothering me about certain republican goals...I'm just confused.... (11/3/2010 12:34:07 PM)

One - with the economy the way it is and many economists saying another stimulus is in order, where do you suggest they carve out 20%?, Defense budget, unemployment benefits?

two- was that "duh" really necessary?

There's no doubt that there is pork in the budget, but 20%? Hey I know! Let's hit up the contractors in Iraq, maybe they'll be able to find some billions unaccounted for!

At what cost to employment numbers? How well did ignoring unemployment while taking in that Broadway play work out for Barry?

Could easily cut 20%, yes. Political will to do so, no.

If you're truly interested, here's one place to start looking for ideas:

The Reagan Budget: The Deficit that Didn't Have to Be

I can't say I agree with everything in here (it is also a little dated), but on the whole this would be a sight better than sticking your head in the sand and thinking the deficit will get any better without a some serious sacrifice on the part of government.

Try more like one third, just cut the fucking defense programs designed to fight the Soviet bloc circa 1978.  Do we need a more than 2 million soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen combined?  I'm all for cutting spending if we start with the bloated, fetid, and festering defense budget.

Economically,

Of course there is pork in every budget, but 20%?

BoiJen -> RE: Something bothering me about certain republican goals...I'm just confused.... (11/3/2010 12:51:15 PM)

While this discussion is interesting...it doesn't clarify the whole minimize government/invade people's personal lives stance the republicans tend to have/state.

We could start with cutting funding to such asinine things as N.P.R., the National Endowment for the Arts grants which always seem to go to those artists who are most avant-garde and/or offensive, we could purge oversight committees on congressional spending on defense, welfare, education and other areas and put others in charge who will deal with a sharper knife and a willingness to stand up to those entities that think that because the government will pay for it, they can charge what they will...all of those things would make a start.

Frankly I haven't seen a republican write a bill that's "limiting individuals' rights by being invasive about people's personal business" care to show me a source? If any party is being invasive it's the Dem's and their anti smoking, anti obesity, anti trans fats...etc crusade

NPR gets 4% of it's operating budget from the Federal government. The majority (40+%) comes from individual donors.

You could cut 20% across the board, combine the ATF, DEA, and Treasury agencies, also the EPA, DNR & Bureau of Land Management could be combined, yeah, it will cause some job losses, but drastic times call for drastic actions.

I'm all for cutting military spending, do we really need 14 super carriers?

SubRob,

Abortion, gay marriage, sodomy....sounds like invasive personal issues to me.
