Mumbai. 0bama0 is going to Mumbai. Reports I've read are that his... entourage? retinue? followers? lackeys?... number 3,000 people. 34 warships. 34 warships??? At a total cost of $200,000,000 per day.

They are renting the Taj Mahal. Not part of it. Not a couple floors of it. THE Taj Mahal.

Does anyone know of anything comparable to this, ever, by an American President? Well, yeah, pretty much, Michelle, sure. But- by an American President??
Not even the Rolling Stones traveled like this (unless you count self-financing groupies, of course )
The commercials write themselves.
I guess they've decided to enjoy it while they can.

I think it's the Taj Mahal Hotel, not the actual Taj Mahal.  That's not a hotel.

I will say that a billion dollars is what I've heard as the estimated cost, and I find that kinda incredible. I have no problem with a President taking what he needs as far as support and security, but that does seem like a pretty high cost.

This is the third thread on this topic... gesh.

They are renting the Taj Mahal Hotel... not the Taj Mahal.

The President doesnt have a say in where he stays, security does.

He is taking his own chef... massive surprise there (not).

And, to remind a few people of the past.... and to show a comparable event....

India is all set to receive US President George Bush with a red carpet.

According to media reports, the National Capital is being spruced up for US President George W Bush's visit next week with the entire Maurya Sheraton hotel where he will be staying booked for the Americans. "All the 600 rooms of the hotel have been booked by the Americans accompanying Bush on his maiden visit as the President," sources said.

Thats not at all my understanding.
The Secret Service makes recomendations. The President- probably through his Chief of Staff- makes decisions.

Bush made 3,000 people stay in 600 rooms??

So, at 283 bucks a night per one adult.......no prime rib...........sounds like hes in the sticks.  Hope we didn't get a special rate, that would be anti capitalistic much like the reason we cant use the government to get drug pricing under control for us.

Whats the per diem on the war in Iraq (the part which is on the books)?

We have some certainty that Obama will have a relitively rapid exit strategy from Mumbai, and is not going to Mumbai under false pretense.

There's just a bit more to it, tazzy...and if you can come up with any article showing that Clinton or Bush or any other president took a comparable...in cost, in numbers, in security...trip, please do so.  I could not.

It's understandable that Obama wants to be on the other side of the world when results from the mid-term elections are being realized. But, in a time of hardship for so many Americans, one can only onder what the extravagance of his November 6th trip to India will cost. Here are a few highlights:

- The President has booked all 570 rooms, banquet rooms, and restaurants at the 5 start Taj Mahal
hotel.

- In addition to the Taj Mahal Hotel, 125 rooms at the Taj President, and 80 to 90 rooms at each the Grand Hyatt and Oberoi Hotels have been booked for his additional entourage.

- In addition to Air force one, two jumbo jets and military figher escorts will be usd to ferry his staff.

- 45 cars will be used in his motorcade.

- Because the Taj Mahal Hotel is seasde, the U.S. Navy will be patrolling the waters out to 330 km off the coast.

- The administration has booked the entire India National Center for the Performing Arts to meet with business leaders.

- The security detail will be HUGE.

- Michelle is going to meet with 'commercial sex workers'. Why, I don't know. But the additional cost of her security to enter th seediest areas of Mumbai must be quite a bit.

- The distruption of life and traffic in Mumbai will cost the locals plenty.

Read the article from the Economic Times here:

"US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle will be extremely busy in Mumbai, upon landing on November 6 for a two day India visit. As the world’s most powerful man and his wife zip around the city visiting the 26/11 memorial on Marine Drive, the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mani Bhawan and other locations in south Mumbai, the security obviously will be water-tight .

Adding to the Obamas’ busy schedule is Michelle’s likely visit to Kamathipura, where she will meet commercial sex workers on the invitation of an NGO. The highprofile visit is likely to inconvenience the citizens, as there could be a complete clampdown on traffic on some main roads of south Mumbai and sanitisation of buildings flanking them.
The Obamas will stay at the Taj Mahal Hotel, and his itinerary practically means Marine Drive will be shut for vehicular traffic on the day of the President’s visit, while buildings flanking it will be sanitised with security personnel manning them until Obama has left the place. Same would be the case with Obama’s visit to Mani Bhawan and Michelle going to Kamathipura.

An officer with the security establishment said, “Several other arterial roads in south Mumbai will also see restricted traffic movement, with tight security all around. The Obamas are not expected to schedule any engagements in the night due to security reasons.”

Since Obama is expected to arrive in the afternoon on November 6, and will
travel by road to the Taj Mahal Hotel, the entire stretch from airport to the hotel will be under heavy security. The officer said, “There will be no vehicular movement on Western Express Highway at that time. Traffic on roads leading up to the highway will also be stopped. All buildings flanking the entire stretch will be sanitised. However, there is no threat from the snipers as the President will travel in a bullet-proof car with 4.5-inch thick sheets, which are impenetrable for any gun.”
Obama’s personal security staff itself will be huge, and it has already started making its own arrangements in Mumbai. “A team of secret service agents has already arrived, and has surveyed the areas of his stay and the roads and places on his itinerary,” the officer said.

To ensure fool-proof security, the President’s team has booked the entire the Taj Mahal Hotel, including 570 rooms, all banquets and restaurants. Since his security contingent and staff will comprise a huge number, 125 rooms at Taj President have also been booked, apart from 80 to 90 rooms each in Grand Hyatt and The Oberoi hotels. The NCPA, where the President is expected to meet representatives from the business community, has also been entirely booked.
The officer said, “Obama’s contingent is huge. There are two jumbo jets coming along with Air Force One, which will be flanked by security jets. There will be 30 to 40 secret service agents, who will arrive before him. The President’s convoy has 45 cars, including the Lincoln Continental in which the President travels.”

Since Obama will stay in a
hotel that is on sea front, elaborate coastal security arrangements have been made by the US Navy in consonance with the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard. “There will be US naval ships, along with Indian vessels , patrolling the sea till about 330-km from the shore. This is to negate the possibility of a missile being fired from a distance,” the officer said.

The President will be accompanied by his chefs, not because he would not like to savour Indian cuisine, but to ensure his food is not spiked.

US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are scheduled to land in Mumbai on November 6."

Come on Tazzy this, "Well W did it" argument is getting old. He shouldn't have blown ridiculous amounts of money on this kind of shit either. I understand the importance of state visits and all but it seems our government needs to take a direct look at sites like "gotomeeting.com" or something more cost effective.

In case the point has eluded everyone, we're broke. Now everyone needs to start spending like they want to survive this crap. Just the other day I was wondering, if you, as a leader of this country knew we had terrible money trouble and you still spent like a loon could that be seen as treasonous since you are risking national security? I mean somtimes it appears they want to break the bank and ruin us.

Everyone needs to stop apoligizing for the nonsense of their favorite spendsters (no matter their party) and pay better attention to the bottom line before there is no bottom line.

To put this into the "proper" perspective...

FULL QUESTION

There are reports all over that Obama’s India trip will cost $200 million per day. I haven’t been able to find a credible rebuttal to this but I can’t believe it could be true.

FULL ANSWER

This story has spread rapidly among the president’s critics, but there is simply no evidence to support it. And common sense should lead anyone to doubt it. For example, the entire U.S. war effort in Afghanistan currently costs less than that — about $5.7 billion per month, according to the Congressional Research Service, or roughly $190 million per day. How could a peaceful state visit cost more than a war?

The hard-to-swallow claim originated with a Nov. 2 Press Trust of India article quoting an unnamed "top official" in the government of Maharashtra (one of India’s states). The source was quoted as saying that Obama’s upcoming trip to Mumbai will cost $200 million per day for security and living arrangements, among other things. The story claimed that the president would be accompanied by about 3,000 people, including Secret Service agents, government officials and journalists, and will stay at the Taj Mahal Hotel — the scene of a 2008 terrorist attack.

Nevertheless, the story was widely repeated without any additional reporting. Soon after the article was released, The Drudge Report — a news aggregation website — linked to the Press Trust of India article, with the headline "REPORT: US to spend $200 million per day on Obama’s Mumbai visit…" Later that day, Rush Limbaugh claimed on his radio show that "Five hundred seven rooms at the Taj Mahal, 40 airplanes, $200 million a day this nation will spend on Obama’s trip to India." He repeats the "$200 million a day" claim several times throughout the show without specifying its source.

The allegation has generated a great deal of Internet discourse over the past few days, including a Washington Times post that claims Obama’s entourage on the trip "will spend enough to bankrupt a small nation." According to the Economic Times and The Daily Mail, Obama will take over the entire 570-room Taj Mahal Hotel for the trip. A Google search for the exact words of the original Press Trust article returned about 11,000 results. And we received about two dozen queries about it.

The White House is always reluctant to discuss cost figures about presidential trips, since the bulk of the expense is for Secret Service security. Not this time. The White House press office, which said it had been flooded with queries, gave us the following statement:

Matt Lehrich, White House Office of Media Affairs: The numbers reported in this article have no basis in reality. Due to security concerns, we are unable to outline details associated with security procedures and costs, but it’s safe to say these numbers are wildly inflated.

It is always costly to move a U.S. president around the world. And in this case, the president is attending a G-20 meeting and will be accompanied by several cabinet officials. But given the dubious source of this assertion, the fact that the claimed cost exceeds the cost of a war, the flat denial by the White House and the lack of any evidence to support the claim, we’ll classify this one as false.

–Lara Seligman

As far as the costs for the Clinton or Bush trip, you wont find those, Rarely does the WH reveal any costs, making this even less plausible.

Master Bull,

I would hope by now, after all these years, you would know me well enough to know that I dont mind being taken to task when Im wrong.

I dont like the "Bush did it so its ok" theories either. I also dont like those who take the blogger world as fact.

The cost of this trip, which Im going with Master Ron here and thinking its more like 200 million for the whole trip, not just to India, and not as a cost per day... I believe thats excessive, but understandable, I suppose, because of where its going to take place. Hopefully those 200 corporate executives who are also going are paying their own way.
