This can't be good for working class people in the U.S. More "outsourcing" to India?
I'd rather see Obama go to Detroit and see the results of all this "globalism" and "free trade."

Whats the per diem on the war in Iraq (the part which is on the books)?

We have some certainty that Obama will have a relitively rapid exit strategy from Mumbai, and is not going to Mumbai under false pretense.

Last night I was going to post a interview Anderson Cooper had with Sen. Michelle Bachmann on his show (AC 360). In that interview, Sen. Bachmann comes up with the outragious figure of $200 million/day for the trip to India. And as such the 'good' senator was trying to use that number, to suggest President Obama is out of touch with reality. At the end of his show, Mr. Cooper explains where the figure '$200 million/day' came from. Fortunately, Tazzy pointed it out above.

Still, I figured "OH, the conservatives on here wouldn't be THAT STUPID." "They would think $200 million/day seems just 'alittle', off the true cost." "Senator Bachmann is known to be 'a few clowns short of a full circus' and usually gets her facts wrong; surely people would question her understanding of reality?" But no, conservatives, even observed on this forum, are happy as pigs in shit with their ignorance. Rather then question whether something like this is true or not, they happily accept what they are told. They are happy to join in on anything that sounds like the President is getting bashed, even when the facts dont check out.

Now, one conservative actually stated the OP's thread didnt sound correct. I would be guessing there are a few others. Unfortunately, they are in the minority of what makes up the Republican Party. Failure to check facts is very costly. I can understand someone here or there, but the depth and range of the ignorance, is simply stunning!

The President always travels with a huge number of people when he leaves the country.

The 3 jets is pretty simple.
AF1 carries the President and his close staff, secret service detail, some guests and the white house press corps.
A second government jet, often a back up air force 1, carries additional lower level staffers, uniformed secret service agents, etc.
Then the news networks charter a jet for their reporters and support personel that aren't the white house correspondents.
Additional military transports move the Presidential limos and helicopters.

On the other hand if one of the major thrusts of the trip was to open up foreign markets to American products....it just might be good for American workers.
Of course blinded as you are by your irrational xenophobia ...that never occured to you.
By the way how did the election turn out for that "whorehouse Harry" you kept talking about?

Mike, we're talking India, a third world or fourth world country! How many Lincolns and Cadillacs will they be buying from us this year?
What is the "median" income in India, maybe $60 a month? And most are below that. How many Chevrolets will they be buying from us?
Sure, let's open up foreign markets to American products! How's about we start with India and Haiti!" Then, we could move on to Zimbabwe and Milawi! We'll be RICH!!!
It's not the job of our govt. to be "opening foreign markets." That's the job of public and private companies and corporations.
And as for Whorehouse Harry a lot of his votes are suspect. Illegal aliens aren't supposed to vote in this country.
And look at Barney Fwank, if he was a CEO of a company and handled it like Fannie and Freddie he'd have been fired long ago! Instead they reward ineptitude by reelecting his incompetant fat ass.
I am SO glad I moved out of Massachusetts long ago!

Do you ever engage your brain prior to engaging your mouth.
1) India is one of the worlds fastest growing markets
2) Has it occured to you that there will be delegations from other countries/markets in attendance.
You are hopeless Pops.....hopeless and totally xenophobic.Whether you like it or not it is a global economy...America can not withdraw from the global market ,she needs to learn to compete better in that market....Your brand of isolationism was found wanting in the '30's(about the time you were born?)...it has not ,in the intervening years, become any more valid a point of view.

Not that the truth matters to conservatives, but:

Obama's India trip -- not as expensive as you may have heard
USA Today
11/4/10
No, President Obama's trip is not going to cost $200 million a day.

That figure -- first thrown out by a single Indian media outlet and now viral on conservative talk radio -- is wildly, wildly off the mark.

I do find it interesting that the President will be staying at the Taj Majal Hotel, which is just steps from the Gateway to India, both of which have been subject to terrorist attacks...thankfully, both attacks happened after I was last there.

For the record, currently, 200,000,000 rupees is $4.5 million.

And do you know what I find interesting? I will wager, that even after the facts of the matter have been reported, and the erroneous information corrected, that there will still be silly people who will have it in their mind that the President rented the whole "Taj Majal" (which is a mausoleum about 750 miles away from Mumbai) and spent $200 million dollars doing so. In fact, I find it amazing that those people were ignorant enough to post such mindless nonsense in the first place, without checking the facts.

Is the above statement based on bigotry and assumptions alone ?

You do know it has the worlds fourth largest rail network ? You do know their economy is growing at 9% per annum ? You do know India has the fourth largest GDP in the world ?  You do realise its not all about Cadillacs ?

Polite...unfortunately,for pops, the answer to all of your questions would be a resounding NO....the man has a very, and I mean very, limited area of knowledge.
He was in the Coast Guard...so assume he can tie some knots...any other assumptions are made at extreme peril

FR:

One of the things that I was worried about when Obama took office was whether or not he would continue to grow the relationship with India (and Australia) as part of a counterweight to China.

Personally, if he handles it correctly, I think a closer relationship with India is in the US's long term best interest, and I'll give him a lot of leeway to accomplish that.

Again very important that Pakistan(first) and India(second) is where our watchdogs for Afghanistan are going to lie, so those motherfuckers gotta get along with US and they gotta get along with THEM.

Remember, these 'towelheaded, dirtpoor, good for nothing, 3rd or 4th world countries' have NUKES, and not just two, advanced programs, besides having a few rupees to swill around.

Right, but they are our best defense against Afghanistan, and they aint friendly with each other, remembering the days since independence and Gandhis death. P/I was one country, but the Moozlims (Paki) went off on their own, something Mohandas strove to avoid.

Come on Tazzy this, "Well W did it" argument is getting old. He shouldn't have blown ridiculous amounts of money on this kind of shit either. I understand the importance of state visits and all but it seems our government needs to take a direct look at sites like "gotomeeting.com" or something more cost effective.

In case the point has eluded everyone, we're broke. Now everyone needs to start spending like they want to survive this crap. Just the other day I was wondering, if you, as a leader of this country knew we had terrible money trouble and you still spent like a loon could that be seen as treasonous since you are risking national security? I mean somtimes it appears they want to break the bank and ruin us.

Everyone needs to stop apoligizing for the nonsense of their favorite spendsters (no matter their party) and pay better attention to the bottom line before there is no bottom line.

I was not under the impression that these assholes(red or blue) cared one whit about our economic position so long as theirs was not threatened.

Dunno if you track that kind of stuff, but the story of the Russian military equipment that they sold to India is pretty frigging funny, in a sad sort of way, especially an aircraft carrier.

I followed the story for several years, but to give a taste:

India, Russia settle aircraft carrier deal
Published: Dec. 8, 2009 at 11:36 AM

The Admiral Gorshkov was gifted to India -- free of charge -- in 2004 in line with a contract signed the same year.

The 44,570-ton aircraft carrier, now rechristened to INS Vikramaditya, was set to be delivered in 2008, but the process has been delayed because of a renegotiation over the refitting prices.

The initial contract had earmarked $964 million for the vessel's refurbishment and $536 million for a complement 16 MiG29K fighter aircraft fitted on board.

Four years later, however, Russia claimed it underestimated the cost of the project, adding a surcharge of $1.2 billion and delaying delivery of the navy ship until 2012.

India rebuffed the price hike, calling it exorbitant. Yet it has since then agreed to pay $800 million for the refitting project, Indian media reported.

The squabble over the Soviet-made carrier had come to symbolize the strains in relations between the two Cold War allies.

Wikipedia had another price:

On December 17, 2009, it was reported that India and Russia ended the stalemate over Gorshkov price deal by agreeing on a price of USD 2.3-billion

From "free" to $2.3 billion ... that's what you get from dealing with the Russians.

Firm

The ship was free the refurb is what the indians are paying for.
One would think if you had been following this for the past few years you would have known that.

This might give you an idea how much a carrier cost.
