My kids don't watch a lot of TV and when they do they like The History Channel and Discover.

My oldest who is now 9 used to love to watch, So You Think Your Smarter Than A 5th Grader. She was about 7 then and loved for me to sit down and watch with her because she could answer the questions. I know the school she attended was ahead but she still could answer a large portion of the science questions, many of them well beyond her grade level. I asked how she knew the answers and she just gave me this "dad duh" look and popped out with Sid the Science Kid.

Which brings me to my point. Many people on the right of the spectrum are often ranting about having Public Broadcasting cut off. They settle on a couple of shows they disapprove of and declare Public Broadcasting a left leaning disgrace.

At a time when Math and Science seems to be at such a low, why would we want to do away with one of the best outlets we have for helping kids.

Sid the Science Kid
Dinosaur Train
Word Girl
Between the Lions

That's just off the top of my head. I guess Laura Bush was actually just a liberal harlot for all of the work she did with Between the Lions.

Everything has to be so left and right that we just ignore quality, even when it is successful and helping with a need?

We didn't even mention NPR, but I think everyone knows those damn Car Talk guys are huge communist, lol.

If they are good shows they will survive without public funding.

Typical response form you Wilbur.

Most kids shows are about making money. What products and how many of them can we sell. PBS is different the shows focus on education and opening up minds.

Everything is not about dollars and cents. When you try and make it such you wind up with what we have. A country that is rapidly falling behind in Science and math.

I tend to agree with willbe here, notably because our National public broadcaster, the CBC has mostly shitty programs, though its news programming is good, as is the Saturday night fight show....every once in a while a hockey game breaks out

CPB has some great kids shows as well.

When you let the market drive certain things we wind up with GI Joe and Hannah Montana. Entertainment meant to flood store shelves with things to sell.

Our kids don't watch a lot of TV, but when they do it's mostly PBS. They get a lot out of it most of the time without even realizing their learning.

As a society shouldn't this be the type of things we encourage.

When I heard this I am WTF?

I mean- when I do tune in NPR- they are often in a pledge drive. Also- if it is public funded- how come there are so many commercials in it? I mean- listen closely- content vs not content... I mean teasers, and "brought to you by".

They ballyhoo that they are not commercial-- and yet- commercial HAS crept into the format.

Try listening. When they mention a sponsor then turn it off. When you think about it again- turn it back on- but only until you hear them mention another sponsor.

Programming all the way -- thru out industry has declined to time waster mode.

I see much better content by regular people- in writing and on video online... just every day people.

Yes, but this is being too forward thinking. That's the problem with The Right. They're defination of 'short term' and 'long term' are very different from us. Short term for folks on the right, is about two or three months. Long term is the next Presidental election. For folks on the left, short term is about two or three YEARS. Long term, is ten to fifty years.

It seems to me, that as soon as 'goverment' and 'benefit' are found in the same sentence, those on the right are strictly oppose to it, regardless of the rest of the words in the sentence. "The goverment pays to keep PBS around, that airs programs that benefits children's learning across the nation". That sentence would be what most on the right would oppose. The benefit is not to they, themselves, but their children. Since it doesnt benefit them, themselves, why should they pay for it? Selfishness runs high on the right side of the political debate.

I myself dont have kids right now (working on that), but I do see the benefit of the programs you listed. A few years ago, PBS aired 'Planet Earth' with amazing photography and video. Many of the programs on PBS can be entertaining for different age groups. Likewise, when they have a marathon to raise money, they usually offer some good stuff. Found I'd enjoyed 'Yanni: Live at the Acropolis' (spelling?) and 'Blast!'.

I dont see any valid reason or reasons to discontiune a system that provides a good thing to the American people.

The BBC is fucking brilliant. I love it that the quality is consistently high, that they can experiment with stuff and not have to panic about advertisers pulling out, and I love it that I can watch a whole evening of entertainment without seeing a single advert. Public Broadcasting is an excellent idea.

I would think so, yes. There are some things that are worth the cost and I think PBS is one of them.

And maybe something other than BBC programming all the time. BBC has some great programs but I get tired of watching them all the time. PBS is a good tool for training tho. My son was a cameraman for them for a while when he was interested n broadcast journalism. Free of course.

I dont understand why they are funded- but still need 4 fund raisers a year- and still have what amounts to be commercial sponsors.

I grew up watching PBS. I have fond memories of Reading Rainbow, 321 Contact, Newton's Apple, Bill Nye The Science Guy, Magic School Bus, and Square One.

And then Barney came along, and then the Teletubbies. I don't even want to know what's on there now for kid's programming.

Politics aside, I'm a firm believer in PBS and the potential it has (or had) to enlighten children. Get rid of programs like Teletubbies, and I'm fine with pledging some money to keep 'er going. Especially if I get a PBS umbrella with a picture of a PBS totebag on it.

I'm not agreeing with you that what little PBS does in that manner is so left leaning.

I am asking you of all the things they do, why is this what the right fixates on? When in fact it is so little of what they do.
