Collarme As A Hub For Russian Organised Crime   If you had not noticed already, the majority of profiles on CollarMe are fraudulent. Current estimates are that around 95% of the total database of profiles are fake. New fake profiles are added each day at an incredible rate. This is intriquing. Why so many, and what is going on? A little research sheds some light on this. If you use Tin-Eye to do an image search on many of the profiles, you will find an amazing number of them are hosted elsewhere on websites with .ru  url. Frequently you will find these pictures fronting fake profiles on Russian dating sites, or Russian social networking sites.  Yet many of the profiles on CollarMe using these photographs are not for Russian users, but for girls located, ostensibly, in small towns through the UK, USA and Europe. Equally interesting is that these profiles on CollarMe are often well written and have had considerable thought put into making them seen genuine. One explanation would be that these are adolescent guys from the UK or Europe hoping to see a bit of totty on their webcams. But when there are a huge number of UK, USA and European amateur websites and forums to steal pictures from, why are the majority of these photographs being stolen from Russian websites? These Russian websites are hard to find and navigate for most English speaking users. The majority of hack attacks and ID theft originates from Russia, which is currently the capital of worldwide cyber crime. So, to all genuine users on CollarMe, be warned.

A: Where did you get your numbers from?
B: Are you affiliated with Tin-Eye in some way?
C: Did the numbers come from you searching all of the pictures with Tin-Eye yourself?

If so, hats off to you. I thought I was tenacious.

I was massively disappointed the first time I tried borscht. I was led to believe it would be delicious. I like beetroot, so I had no reason to doubt this.

I was sadly mistaken.

*Nobody* has nice borscht :-(

VC there are two kinds of borsht. The one you had is basically a beet boiled in water spiced with a little sugar and vinegar and served with a spoonful of sour cream. The good kind is a beef soup with slivered beets.

And I really object to another conspiracy nut showing up. We have one already and that's more than enough.
My teen started watching Fox news and believing everything they said, I shut that down by saying I have never known a conspiracy theorist who does not eventually announce it is all the fault of the Jews, and I was not putting up with that from him, who has been Bar Mitzvahed, has had a course in Holocaust studies etc.It ended that phase thankfully.

Probably not suprisingly, my post has been met with incredulity and some witty jibes. That is all all good and fine. I realise that some extra information may help.

The first step is to get abreast of the facts relating to botnets. A botnet is a network of hijacked computers. What are they used for? A variety of purposes, from cyber attacks, taking down websites, cheque fraud, gathering identity data, online banking fraud, forwarding infected email & etc etc. An infected computer is known as a "zombie". It performs those tasks without the owners knowledge. It may not harm the zombie computer's user in any way. Quite often the intended target is a much bigger fish, like a banking website, credit card lists etc.

A recent report commisioned by Microsoft estimated that more than 2.2 million US PCs had become part of botnets in the first six months of 2010 alone. A principal area for recruiting zombies are sex sites and sex networking sites. The general consensus is that most of the botnet activity is coordinated in Russia. It may not be paid for in Russia, its just that there is plenty of expertise there : ). Recently the BBC ran an experiment to see how easy it was to rent a Russian run botnet. For a few thousand dollars, they rented a botnet that was made up of 21,696 compromised home pcs the world over. For those who want further info just Google any of these search terms: Bredolab, ZeuS, BigBoss, Rustock, Mariposa.

And to give a little bit of perspective, an interesting point of note is that when FakeWatch was set up and posted information about the use of profiles on Collarme, two things happened. One was that the original website was taken down due to a denial of service hack attack. The other was that the founder received threatening emails originating from a Russian server.

I havent posted this up to boost any conspiracy theories or to be alarmist. The cold war has long gone. I am not a fan of Fox News. Cyber crime is a fact of life. The purpose of this post, is just a heads up, for discussion.
Best wishes
H.

But you are assuming all of this simply because people are using pictures
that aren't of themselves? I'm sure there are many Russian social networks
that cater to kink, whether publicly or privately. I can't imagine that BDSM is
limited to only the USA or the Uk. Maybe the Russians realize we have much better
graphic content...and thats how they arrived on their sites.
Doesn't that sound more plausible?

<------------- by the way, this isnt really me. But I'm french and italian.
What pray tell are my ulterior motives for being here?

Hi Icarys,
A - The numbers come from some research done by the group FakeWatch.
B - I am not affiliated with Tin-Eye in anyway. Its a great program. I think the more people who know about it the better. But it wasnt my purpose in this post was to publicise it.
C - I didnt do the research. I wasnt part of FakeWatch. But if you use Tin-Eye's website to check, you can see how many profiles are using borrowed photographs. The proportion of fake profiles that come up using Tin-Eye seems to lend some credence to FakeWatch's figures. It might be only 70% or 80% but whatever it is, it is still an amazingly high figure.

It would of course be wrong to assume "all this" simply because people are using photographs which are not of themselves. Other factors are involved.  For example using an artistic photograph gives one impression. Using a photographs on a profile that look like a "home photos" taken with a phone, gives a completely different signal. So intelligence and caution are needed of course. There are many many reasons people have for posting fake photographs. The connection with organised crime is simply the fact that a high proportion of photographs appear on Russian sites. One might expect a geographic scattering of such photos. This is the point. Why do so many appear on Russian sites, which are hard for westerners to navigate and where the language/alphabet is Russian cyrillic? If an English speaking person wanted to borrow a photo off a website to put on a UK or USA profile here on CM, it would be more than easy to find such a photo from any number of English language amateur websites. But very difficult to search them out on little known Russian ones.

Lockit -> RE: Collarme As A Hub For Russian Organised Crime (11/13/2010 2:14:02 PM)

Okay what does this mean? I put in my picture from here on CM and got this back. It says that tineye hasn't crawled the website where my picture appears. If someone had been putting lots of pictures on tineye, from CM wouldn't they have crawled the site? (I didn't post the whole statement from tineye in an attempt not to break CM rules.)

  • TinEye is constantly crawling the web and updating our image database regularly. If we missed your image, it is simply because we have not yet crawled the website or page where it appears. But be sure to keep checking back! We add tens of millions of new images to TinEye every month, and our index is on the grow.

Humillacion -> RE: Collarme As A Hub For Russian Organised Crime (11/13/2010 2:18:20 PM)

It means only that Tineye hasnt found another website containing that photo, that is all. :)
Try using Tin-Eye on an obviously fake profile photo. Or you could go to the FakeWatch website and run Tin-Eye on some photos  from the lists of fake profiles there.

Lockit -> RE: Collarme As A Hub For Russian Organised Crime (11/13/2010 2:34:19 PM)

Dude, there are about twenty people listed on fakewatch. If you are such an advocate, where are all the pictures you have found at tineye, from here? Twenty frigging nicks! Yes, we have a mass take over on CM... some hub...

I havent counted exactly but I guess there are at least 100 profiles noted on FakeWatch's CollarMe site. Did you try the right website? *Wonders*

I am not here as an advocate of FakeWatch. It was just an interesting site and a worthwhile experiment I thought. The number of profiles on FakeWatch, isnt connected to this post. It doesnt validate or invalidate the point being made. I believe its not allowed to post up details of profiles on the forum. But as I said, if you run a Tin-Eye search you can easily find a large number.
H.

P.S. If you would like the correct FakeWatch url, please pm me. Im not sure if its allowed to post up links on this forum. The website hasnt been updated for a long time. The group seems to have been only active for about month. A hundred profiles might not seem a lot, and it certainly doesnt reflect the number of profiles you can find using Tin-Eye, but it must have represented quite a labour to research and put up those profiles for whoever did it. Hats off to them, I would say :)

I just put in a picture I know is at many sites. Guess what? No results. I don't think this tineye is all that if they are missing some major sites where that picture is.

rulemylife -> RE: Collarme As A Hub For Russian Organised Crime (11/13/2010 2:57:53 PM)

Can we go back on topic and talk about borscht?

Lockit -> RE: Collarme As A Hub For Russian Organised Crime (11/13/2010 2:59:07 PM)

OMG! You are telling people to use fakewatch and there is a place there for jailbait! WTF dude? Any connection to anyone that could be jail bait is gunna piss me off if you sent me to any connection, I don't care if it is one link out of a hundred.

Seriously, I was thinking harmless, check it out... and I go to a site that has a link to jailbait. Fuck you!

Calm down Lockit. :D There is no link to "jailbait", except showing where the original faker got the photographs from. If you want to object to it, object to the person who used a photograph from that jailbait website to make profile on CollarMe.
