Which phrase Aylee?

The, "anything to keep us safe."  And their variations.

And as I said to MM, there were not actually political affiliations next to the comments.  It is just how I associated it.

I agree. The talk of the sheeple.

Unless I am very much mistaken, you have no "right" to fly, and therefore whatever limitations and rules are made regarding flying are legal. If you don't like the rules in place you have two choices: 1) Don't fly, 2) Change the rules. Challenging them on some constitutional level is pointless and guaranteed to fail.

Except it is not the airlines making these rules.  It is a federal agency.
I fail to see how that makes any difference to what I said.

I thought the "anything to keep us safe" talking point was Cheneys.

CynthiaWVirginia -> RE: Don't bloody well touch me!!! (11/22/2010 10:32:24 PM)

Fast reply.

The last time mom took a plane it teed all of us off.  No food was served, she couldn't bring drinks, some of her stuff was tossed out, we couldn't wait with her until it was time for her to board the plane...her six foot tall grandson couldn't carry her luggage so she hurt her back doing it herself.

This time when going from WV to Florida, she took a Greyhound bus.  Imagine a 70 something year old woman choosing to spend two days each way on a bus rather than go through all the airport BS.

If I cannot drive a car where I want to go, then I'm not going...until all this shiite stops.

One does not surrender their constitutional rights when they buy a plane ticket.

This is also the presumption of guilt,  not innocent until proven guilty.

And the alarm is that these same measures will be used in EVERY public venue,  post offices, malls, buses,  sports events, even a mobil unit that floats around.  So the issue is not as easy as  refusing to fly.

LaTigresse -> RE: Don't bloody well touch me!!! (11/23/2010 4:16:16 AM)

Monday through Friday, I drive a hundred miles a day, easily. Last summer I drove just shy of 700 in a day, twice, in one week, with Generic Dude and 3 dogs....in a M3. Did it the summer before, all by myself, also.

I adore the actual flying but I've always HATED the airport bullshit. Being searched, seriously would not bother me too much but all the rest of the chaos that has been there for years, makes me verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyy grumpy. Much much less stressful to hop into a car I love to drive, and go.

pahunkboy -> RE: Don't bloody well touch me!!! (11/23/2010 4:29:06 AM)

Lat is right-

From here to Chicago is 640 miles.   It is not much easier to fly.   The planes are often delayed even on a direct flight- and the airport is a hassle.   Getting there is confusing,  (Harrisburg)  the roads are ALWAYS ripped up- and once there-  the stress continues.

DomKen -> RE: Don't bloody well touch me!!! (11/23/2010 7:41:01 AM)

Some facts to counter the hysteria.

The infamous video of the boy being searched with his shirt off. He had set off the scanner and his father had removed his shirt to speed up the rescreening. TSA did not force the boy to take off his shirt.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/11/22/lawmakers-seek-probe-tsas-pat-training-reported-misbehavior/

The use of the full body scanner and the meticulous pat downs for people who refuse to be scanned and for those who set off the scanner is a minimum to prevent weapons and explosives getting on planes. There is plenty of documentation that earleir security measures were easily beaten. This isn't safety at any cost. Any cost would be the incredibly invasive El Al screening system which would bring air travel to a standstill. The present system is a compromise between safety and privacy.

Aneirin -> RE: Don't bloody well touch me!!! (11/23/2010 8:01:41 AM)

But it seems people are getting pissed off with the increased airport security, the pressumption that everyone is a terrorist until they are checked over, this undoubtedly is having an impact on the flying public, the more that come to feel this way, the more it will hit the pockets of the airlines and they then will question the need to make the public feel that they are just guilty for not being authority, as Michael O'leary the boss of Ryan Air has already said on tv.

The trouble is with airport security, the authorities use a knee jerk policy and only respond to a threat after it has already been used, the result, a terrorist's second desire, hassle and humiliation for those flying after, and a distance growing between the people and those that rule them.

If it is accepted that with general policing, it takes a thief to catch a thief, a thief or one clued up as a thief might be to catch thieves, then it stands that to catch a terrorist or their actions, it takes a terrorist as no one knows the mind set of terrorist more. To be successful in preventing terrorist actions, those charged with airport security just need to think outside the box, as obvious is not the name of the game to be successful.

Mostly backscatter x-ray machines.  There are also millimeter-wave scanners.

These give a full body outline kind of like those comic book x-ray goggles.

Some are worried that people can see there "nekkidness" and worry about leaked images.  Some worry about the radiation.

While the radiation is low, this does pose a couple of problems.  1.  Pilots and frequently travelers are at a greater risk for exposure.  2.  The lower the radiation the less effective these are.  3.  Calibration.  They have no one that is monitoring their calibration and effectiveness like you would have at a hospital or doctor's office for the direct beam x-ray machines that everyone is familiar with.

Those baggage scanners they use. . . those are really effective and really smart machines.

These backscatter machines are not really very good.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Don't bloody well touch me!!! (11/23/2010 8:25:57 AM)

How would you like us to handle security?  I understand that it, at times, goes too far, but when dealing with terrorists who have no rules, can you think of a better way to do things?

If they see that we let babies, women, pregnant women, retarded kids, or some other category go by with no scrutiny, I suspect they will use someone who fits one of those categories to cause further damage.

As someone else said, either on here or in a discussion at work, the terrorists have won in some ways, just because we have to even think about and deal with these issues.
