Brain -> President Obama: FIGHT, don't cave on Bush tax cuts for millionaires! (12/1/2010 3:35:24 PM)

I really don't understand why Pres. Obama may cave in to give tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires. I guess he forgot the middle-class background he came from. I like this Adam Green guy from this bold progressive organization. Extending President Bush's tax cuts is unaffordable and will blow up or exacerbate the budget deficit.

President Obama: FIGHT, don't cave on Bush tax cuts for millionaires!

"President Obama, ARE YOU KIDDING? Democrats lost in 2010 because they caved instead of fighting on popular progressive issues. Americans strongly oppose more tax cuts for millionaires and nearly a trillion in new debt. If you don't fight on this issue, Democrats may lose even more seats in 2012 - and possibly even the White House."

Huffington Post reports: "President Barack Obama's top adviser suggested to The Huffington Post late Wednesday that the administration is ready to accept an across-the-board, temporary continuation of steep Bush-era tax cuts, including those for the wealthiest taxpayers."

FR

Does anyone think Truman wouldn't bitch slap the shit out of the GOP over this?  Or perhaps FDR, or ANY OTHER Democrat with a fucking spine? Including probably JFK/LBJ? Clinton would have "triangulated" and Carter would have tried to compromise.  There you have it the last democrats with any kind of spine JFK & LBJ, since then they've become PUSSIES!!!

I would like to see the Democrats stand up for the middle class with a bill in the House and another in the Senate extending the Bush tax cuts for middle class people making less than $250,000 a year. I would like to see an up or down vote on each of those bills and then wait and see if the Republicans filibuster. I'd like to see the Democrats call the Republicans bluff.

The Republicans have a lot of nerve holding hostage $18 billion in benefits for the unemployed to give $700 billion in tax cuts to millionaires. If those people go on welfare and start collecting food stamps it's going to cost a lot more money than if they got their unemployment benefits in the first place.

Not Extending Unemployment Benefits Would Lower Economic Growth

Unemployment benefits help drive the economy because the jobless tend to spend every dollar they get, pumping cash into businesses. A cut-off of aid for millions of people unemployed for more than six months could squeeze a fragile economy, analysts say. Among the consequences they envision over the next year:

_ Annual economic growth could fall by one half to nearly 1 percentage point.
_ Up to 1 million more people could lose their jobs.
_ Hundreds of thousands would fall into poverty.

"Look for homelessness to rise and food lines to get longer as we approach Christmas if the situation can't be resolved," says Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial.

The democrats had the last two years to introduce a bill helping the middle class. It's over for them. Their desks are already in the hallway and they are packing up their things.

Brain -> RE: President Obama: FIGHT, don't cave on Bush tax cuts for millionaires! (12/1/2010 8:16:21 PM)

It's never over. And as Teddy Kennedy would say, “The cause goes on and the dream never dies!”

Tell that to the 64 House democrats and 6 Senate democrats that were thrown out of office on November 2nd. Maybe that's why they want unemployment benefits extended once again.?

And this is exactly what i suspected would happen.

I am wondering where the 700 billion figure comes from? Total US government tax revenue is about 2.5 trillion per year (2009). How does 10% increase in taxes for some taxpayers  produce ~30% more total revenue?
It would be interesting to see how this thing will be resolved though. The question is what the priorities are; to gain some partisan political points or move towards fixing the structural problems in US economy? This little tax game solves nothing. Looking at the sky high  incompetence level of Obama administration doing nothing would be the best option. So, Obama should take some time off and enjoy good food, family and basketball.

The priority seems to be to improve luxury spending. I suppose people can use their tax cut to buy a new yacht.

Luxury spending is back in fashion
But lag in essentials shows income gap

Consumers are buying more luxury items but spending remains tight for everyday essentials such as food and dental care, a USA TODAY analysis finds, suggesting a growing divide between haves and have-nots.

Purchases of TVs, jewelry, recreational vehicles and pet supplies are growing robustly, government data show. At the same time, spending on medical care, day care, education is down in the dumps.

He says higher-income and older households, helped by a strong stock market, are experiencing increased wealth and spending more. However, high unemployment is pulling in the other direction, depressing spending among people without jobs and those anxious about job security.

o'bama and the leftist game is to separate people by race, income, and whatever other way you can group people. The tax code is a bloody mess the way it is. 12 experts would give you 12 different tax returns. Even the IRS doesn't know their own laws. Now, if you want to be fair, how is it that working poor pay NO taxes? I'd start taxing the poor so they feel they contribute instead of taking. Only the STUPID "rich" (by the way, o'bama and that ilk define Rich as anybody with a job or income) pay any income tax. The answer to the leftists is to DEFEAT THEM in every election. Compromise? Hey obama, where were you two years ago? No no, there is no compromise. There is your defeat. America didn't just now vote for compromise or "getting along" whatever that is.

Whoa whoa... what do you consider the "working poor"?

Moonhead -> RE: President Obama: FIGHT, don't cave on Bush tax cuts for millionaires! (12/2/2010 5:23:12 AM)

Why's that? The whole point of the talking head shows is that they provide prechewed opinions, simplified for people who don't have the intellectual capacity to make up their own tiny minds.

First, your sequence of events is wrong. Filibusters prevent "up or down votes". The vote cannot happen before the filibuster.

Second, Mitch McConnell just delivered a letter to Reed, a letter signed by all 42 Republican Senators, stating that they would filibuster all bills until dealing with a continuing resolution and the tax bill. There's no bluff. Everyones taxes go up, or no ones taxes go up.

You libs had the WH, a huge majority in the House, and a filibuster-proof Senate for some 18 months. Reed and Pelosi could have passed this, DADT, and the Dream Act before lunch any day they chose.

What does that tell you, "Brain"?
It tells me they didn't want to pass these libtard wet dreams, that they just wanted the issues to keep you sending in those cards and letters. And checks.
That's what it tells me. What does it tell you?
