The Crown tho has another meaning.

City of London,  DC,  Rome.

And this relates to university fees exactly how?

You were talking about the UK, in fact the London protests against the raised university fees, in the UK The Crown is usually used for the state prosecution services, it's a matter of speech, a bit like in the US "The people versus ...." It's not all the people...

It's truly about as relevant as bald patches and tooth restoration are for student fees, mind you, I would think that students are generally fairly young, so less of them might suffer from baldness or bad teeth...

Moonhead -> RE: London Protests Turn Violent With Parliament Under Siege Protesters are now fighting with polic (12/13/2010 5:18:11 AM)

It's possible a few might have had their teeth loosened by truncheons before the weekend...

LadyConstanze -> RE: London Protests Turn Violent With Parliament Under Siege Protesters are now fighting with polic (12/13/2010 5:41:44 AM)

I don't think the peaceful protesters have to worry all that much, the idiots that are violent might have to, hand me an onion, I wish to shed a tear!

Do you import these interesting witticisms from either of your continental languages, or simply hang around with a lot of humourous people?

[:D]

It's actually how I talk in real life too, might be a result of having gotten a DVD of the Mary Whitehouse Experience, and quite liked the character of Ray - "Oh no, what a personal disaster".

I have been told that telling somebody to eff off or swearing just doesn't work in a posh accent (though I don't think I have one, I just have sort of a neutral accent, some people say it sounds very vaguely Scandinavian with Irish and American traces, others decided I sound "plummy" - whatever that means), so I had to find other means to express myself, especially since I tend to work in an environment where effing and blinding is usually frowned upon.

Moonhead -> RE: London Protests Turn Violent With Parliament Under Siege Protesters are now fighting with polic (12/13/2010 7:26:51 AM)

Plummy means well spoken, but not necessarily posh (talking like you've got a plum in your mouth, literally): the whole Peter Cushing/William Hartnell thing.

LadyConstanze -> RE: London Protests Turn Violent With Parliament Under Siege Protesters are now fighting with polic (12/13/2010 7:42:24 AM)

I most certainly don't talk like I have a plum in my mouth, I think I wouldn't be able to pronounce things well speaking around a plum. I just take care to avoid regional accents since I'm currently living oop North and as much as I enjoyed Oasis, I have little desire to sound like one of the Gallagher brothers (could be worse though, sound like Ozzy or a Scouser).

Moonhead -> RE: London Protests Turn Violent With Parliament Under Siege Protesters are now fighting with polic (12/13/2010 7:47:41 AM)

You just need to practise the Scouse alphabet:
"Ey ey eye ey ey..."

It's fewer. As in "fewer of them" might ...

Oh, and I checked with my traffic cop mate and he said your "attorney" (not the UK term but no worries) friend is wrong about assault/violent crime and license loss through psychological profiling, in the UK at least. If the vehicle is used in a serious crime then the vehicle can be seized. If the driver is directly using the vehicle to commit acts of violence (such as armed robbery getaway driver or running people over deliberately) then the license can be seized if the offence contains references to violence, to prevent them doing it again. But nowhere in the statues is there anything about taking someone's license away as a direct result of a non-vehicular act of violence. In other words, if you chin someone in a pub, or beat your wife/husband, they aren't going to say "s/he's got anger management issues" and take your license away.

The only possible thing he thought someone may have confused it with was if someone is sectioned for a violent act then the sectioning doctors can request suspension of their driving license if they can prove beyond reasonable doubt that the sectioned person is likely to harm themselves and/or others using a vehicle. But it's apparently very rare (he's seen it done twice in 16 years on the job).

I adored that show ... I've downloaded as much of it as is out on DVD/video ...

... "IT'S ALL GONE A BIT TRICKY!" [;)]

I loved that sketch about how sexy libraries are...

pahunkboy -> RE: London Protests Turn Violent With Parliament Under Siege Protesters are now fighting with polic (12/13/2010 8:05:47 AM)

So basically it is the fault of the students that fees triple?

Is this the UK position?

Talk about fucking the youth.

Have you apologised for the complete bollocks you were talking about the houses of parliament being under siege in your OP yet?

No, he never does that. He's moving on to talking other bollocks now, as usual.

The old army saying "if in doubt, present a moving target" seems to be one he's really taken on board.

I am sorry that you have ruined this thread.

You offer no constructive debate-  no options-  nothing but smug approval and reverence for the status quo.  All the while your country man are being robbed of their future.
Real funny.    Maybe we can make a reality show over it.

If you find it offensive that people will try to correct you when you start talking drivel, maybe you could try to have a clue what you're talking about in future?

But no, can't possibly be your fault, can it? It must be these mean Brits picking on you with their nasty facts that have nothing to do with the value of gold or the Jewish banker conspiracy...

I loved Bad Dad: "What's this? It's got a good beat!" <cue tragic "dad dancing">.

But nothing, absolutely nothing, beats "History Today" [;)]

"What this period saw was essentially a pendulum-like movement from romanticism to materialism, then violently back once more".

"Yes".

"And that's how you drive, that is. All over the shop" [;)]

I don't think they called him "Bad Dad" that was when they had Adam Buxton's old man doing video reviews on The Adam And Joe Show, wasn't it?

Well the bad dancing one, whoever he was. The Hugh Dennis character.
