Religion is irrelevant to me these days and in the future I hope it becomes extinct.

All of us, every single one of us rationalizes our actions.

It seems cowardly to me to use religion as a crutch for our own decisions.

I think it is sad that you cannot understand what has been clearly explained.  Religion equates to philosophy, morals and personal beliefs.  That some utilize those beliefs as a guide in decision making is not cowardly.  This is no more a "crutch" in making a decision that using logic, facts, emotions, education, or any other tool commonly available.

I think it is sad that you can not understand my post.

I said we all rationalize. Some of us don't blame our poor decisions on " What god wants".

Do you know what God wants for you children? Do you REALLY know?

I was under the impression that we can not know the mind of God.

You are solving riddles based on right and wrong, without acknowledging that right and wrong come from something. You aren't born with these views, you are taught them. So, the ideas instilled in you so deeply, are causing your decisions, and those ideas stem ultimately from philosophy and religion.

So, that's why it must be number 1.

Well, that is all have to say on the subject. I think if you think about it, you'll reorder the list though.

And, yet, i would not die for my country, or my religion, but i would for my son. There is your order.

I turn him in, of course, for both his own benefit, as he clearly needs psychiatric help, and for the community at large.

But, in your scenario, i would turn him in. Not because of god or country, but because i dont wish any harm to come to him.

steeeeeeeeeeeerike 2!

Religion is your belief system regardless of what or how screwed up or sane it is.

It is the core of your reasoning center regardless of what you produce from that reasoning center.

Your religion and atheism is a religion as it has a set of beliefs like any other, works its way out as your politics.

your decisions in all cases were reason and for his best interest based on your core beliefs of what is best.

Funny thing about religion is that without it you are a vegetable.  Regardless of what your "beliefs" are.

Really?

Firm wasnt extreme, here is extreme, and definitely the edge.

Your son has his finger on the button of a nuke planted under 1000 babies.

You have a button too.

Push the button your son dies the 1000 babies live.

which will it be?  Your sons life or the 1000 babies.

I know that one is a fucking biatch!

No one HAS to have a religion to lead a moral life. Maybe murder is ok with you and your family. In mine, it is not. Stating anything in reference to atheism towards me shows how little you understand about my religious beliefs (Not like its not all over these boards, try reading more carefully).

Try reading that scenario once again. You might understand it better, especially if you pulled your foot out of your mouth... just might give you a better visual field.

This is where reality comes into play. I saw the devastation written clearly on my son's face the day we were told my baby neice died at 5. He would kill himself first.

this isnt about what he would do.

its about your family over religion in all cases as you said and what you would do.

what would I do?  religion over everything and my kid would be vaporized and I would deal with the painful aftermath later.

I am governed by principle.

This is also about keeping it in the realm of reality, which is the condition i set for Firm when he started all this. So, since you decided to pick up the ball and run with it, the same limitations extend to you.

the problem you have is that the only place a "moral" life is defined to any great extent is classified under religion.

thats where the term false gods comes from.  you can believe in math or rocks whatever as your religion.

Again and this is really hard for some to wrap their heads around but if you have a belief it technically your religion by definition.

How can anyone escape it?

hey you cant go there, thats ok.

I already said I would vaporize the kid to save the 1000 babies and deal with the emotional after math later.  Its my believe that the life even of a family member is not above the lives of 1000 babies.

You cannot make the hard choices.  I can.  Damned if I would let 1000 kids die because I put my family above everything including religion.

Its a bitch of a question, especially for the infirm,

chuckles

the infirm

this from a man who still cites case law from the UK law books.

Im sorry you are having problems understanding my logic... but that isnt my problem. my son comes before god or country. maybe you would love to die for either of those. i have no desire too. but, when it comes to the child i gave birth too, i would kill for him and not bat an eye.

tell me, how many kids do you have? ever had one die? life experiences and perspectives are different for everyone. You can push your morality only so far onto someone else. all things considering, im a pretty agreeable person. until it comes to my child. 24 years of being his mother gives me alot of insight into the kind of person he has become.

keep it in the lines of reality or dont play. the choice is yours.

that is a very easy scenario for anyone with resources.

you ducked out of the question and now you want to duck out of the fact that you ducked out.

I can tell you what would happen.  You would hesitate because you couldnt kill your son to save the 1000 babies and you would do nothing in that scenario and the 1000 kids would die.

Its ok.  Its no big deal.  I am not pushing my morals on anyone.  I have specific principled and well organized priorities.

I fully admit it was a sunna bitch problem that your inability to answer is the answer.  The difference is that I accept making a totally suck ass decision that would rip me up for a very long time, but I will in the end know I did the right thing.  Now for you saving the 1000 kids may not be the right thing and that is where we would part ways.
