Me neither.

Here in the States, Jaybee, we tend to paint people from certain areas with a very wide brush.
New Yorkers- rude and brash
New Englanders-  sarcastic, stuck up
Southerners- rednecks or super hospitable.

I don't find any of the stereotypes to be very universal at all.

New Englanders are sarcastic and stuck up?

<Really BIG snip>
We both found the idea of racist piano keys amusing, at the end of the night (and towards the end of our wine bottle) we were discussing which shades of grey might be acceptable and which ones could possibly be offensive.

Grey?  You kidding me?

How 'bout NEON GREEN against DARK PURPLE?  Etc.

Leave it to a faggot to come up with a color scheme!  Ooo, o.oo.  And all the  NEON GREEN keys get red borders - just a pin-stripe, mind you.

Nope.  Just that it was suggested by a family friend.  I was only using first couple google pages.  Go for it - google is your friend.

And I don't think there's anyone who lives in upstate NY that wouldn't endorse NYC becoming it's on District.....we upstaters are so sick of all of our tax dollars going to NYC and no where else!  Counties upstate get very little return on tax dollars...NYC sucks them all up.  Let NYC leave the state, we won't miss it!  We'd actually come out ahead!

You've got it backwards soul. NYC tried to secede from the state 20 years ago. Unfortunately the state legislature wouldn't approve it. Because NYC produces more tax revenue than any other municipality. Wall Street makes the money which keeps the state going. Which explains why now that we're in a recession, the state is doing so badly.

pahunkboy -> RE: Question to yanks about midwesterners.... (12/13/2010 7:25:43 PM)

NYC was bankrupt and bailed out by the feds in 1975.

That was 35 years ago - everything the same as it was 35 years ago?

Charles6682 -> RE: Question to yanks about midwesterners.... (12/13/2010 9:02:52 PM)

Well,New York state helped bail out NYC as well. Now that upstate NY economy is such a sham, maybe NYC can help bail out the rest of upstate NY.Sure, from those who never lived in upstate NY,you would think NYC is upstate NY saving grace.Well,it's not.The reality is upstate NY is stuck with insane high taxes because of NYC.NYC gets the majority of state revenue. So basically, upstate NY is basically paying NYC bill's.How is that helping the rest of NY state? Its not.People cant afford to live in NY state anymore.Jobs have left.Really, thanks NYC.Of course the tourist just love NYC.They somehow tend to forget that there is entire state just North of NYC.What does NYC care about anyways? They dont. They dont care about upstate NY or the rest of the USA for the fact. They are greedy people who only care about themselves. As long has NYC has what it want's,who cares about anyone else.

I'm going to guess that the white keys were made of ivory since it was more available than the ebony wood to make the black keys.  BUT!  Instead of guessing I think I'll slide over to wiki and find out about the invention of the piano.  I truly expect to find the choice of ebony and ivory to be based STRICTLY on the maximum difference so as to allow ease in seeing the things.

I am blown-away by the ignorance of anyone that would suggest (and institutionalize) the idea that piano craftsmen were abrogating their higest standards in favor of a racist statement (that wouldn't be recognized for humdreds of years.)

Psst.... While you're over on Wiki, look up the term "joke." The re-read SL4V3M4YB's post and see how you feel about it then. Just sayin,' is all...

It's because the black keys were created on purpose smaller than the white keys that my friend is institutional racism of the piano kind.

Plus, they're taller and skinnier than the white keys. Clearly a reference to the stereotype of blacks as natural-born basketball players.

I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to a piano again without becoming  outraged! [:@]

I'm not saying NYC should secede altogether. However, maybe NYC could be something simliar to how Toronto is in Ontario,Canada.Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Toronto has more autonomy over their own affair's than alot of cities oin Canada.I can't remember exactly how that work's but I know I've read about it before. Some fair compromise should be made.Upstate NY can not continue to pay these insane taxes, irrational regulation that prevents good paying jobs from coming to upstate NY.If NYC wants to tax themselves to death, then let them. The rest of NY state dosen't need to suffer to same doomed fate.

Charles6682 -> RE: Question to yanks about midwesterners.... (12/13/2010 10:16:24 PM)

The Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto,I believe it was called.NYC should try something simliar.

And the farmers of this country are 'bailed out' by the feds annually.

An awful lot of individuals are also, last I checked. Unless the welfare system, medicaid, etc etc etc......have all stopped recently.

SexyBossyBBW -> RE: Question to yanks about midwesterners.... (12/14/2010 4:53:51 AM)

NY city, as diverse as it is, I never though of different parts of that state being incredibly different.
While in college, I met a girl from upstate NY, who grew up without a television, and had never met anyone different in appearance from herself.    We used to spend weekends at my parent's in Providence, poor area, but she got along beautifully with the family, and friends.   She was to this day, the nicest human being I ever met.   I lost touch with her after she graduated first and got married, but miss her to this day.

All this to agree that stereotypes are detrimental to truly opening up to other human beings.   Now, if only I could spiritually get over my social anxiety, the other impedance...   M

Let's try that again:

Blank after each puntuation mark

When it is plural NOT an apostrophe, can't is short for can not so you use an apostrophe

NYC possibly creates more tax revenue than Upstate, just a hunch but somebody might have the figures present.

I have lived in Manhattan and I have lived in Ithaca, when the students are gone a bit of a ghost town. A lot cheaper than NYC to live, you don't need a lot of money to live in Upstate, though there aren't all that many jobs going.

Tourism is a big factor in NYC, not just people coming for vacation and spending like crazy, hotels, shops, restaurants, the whole lot, then you have business travelers, you have Wall Street, you have the garment district, the Jewelers, a lot of the publishing industry is located in NYC, you have the Fashion week which creates millions in revenues...

Without NYC that all would happen? You think people would go to Rochester?

BonesFromAsh -> RE: Question to yanks about midwesterners.... (12/14/2010 5:15:01 AM)

~fast reply~

I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the stereotyping that started this thread....but I am.

I'm a midwesterner...Ohio Buckeye, thank you very much...but I've lived on the east coast...now a Connecticut Nutmeg...for over 20 years. Yeah, people are different depending on what part of the country you're in....west coast folks seem to be laid back, most southerners have great manners, people from the Appalachia area tend to be tight-knit while being cautious at the same time and real new englanders...VT, NH, MA and ME...are made of pretty tough stuff. Of course, this is only my opinion based on my experience with folks from different regions/states.

Isn't that the beauty of being in such a diverse country?

For what it's worth, when I visit family back home, I'm told I talk too fast and need to relax and slow down. Is that such a bad thing? Maybe those midwesterners are onto something good.

SexyBossyBBW -> RE: Question to yanks about midwesterners.... (12/14/2010 5:17:25 AM)

I actually thought, Midwesterners had a reputation for being "nice", unaffected.   <M

CerVeza -> RE: Question to yanks about midwesterners.... (12/14/2010 5:21:40 AM)

It's natural to stereotype... part of our DNA to do so... to keep us safe and save time. What's fun is when the stereotype is wrong. I've made friends that way. Folks that surprise you.

SexyBossyBBW -> RE: Question to yanks about midwesterners.... (12/14/2010 5:26:05 AM)

That very old instinct, is also what keeps us from connecting with other human beings, oftentimes.
I dislike a stereotypical approach.  To me, it is beginning communication from a narrow perspective, basically requiring defense or explanation, rather than simply being.   M
