Be himself?

Scowling may be his default expression.

I value pragmatism far and away over confidence. In fact, confidence is an asset only when it's pragmatic; otherwise, it's simply bullheaded idiocy.

Does that mean I can cancel My big assed Gothic chair order?

AquaticSub -> RE: What makes a Dom a Dom? (12/17/2010 7:33:54 PM)

No, you need something to put your huge cock in.

I mean... he's got to be tired of standing around by now...

Rob Halford. All the boys that he was a tough rocker when in the end it turned out he was a gay leather boy.

And He IS a tough rocker.  Ummmm, and a gay leather boy.

Don't anybody be hatin' on Rob Halford.
I LOVE Judas Priest....Love Rob Halford.  I'd happily be gay for a day for Rob Halford.

[I'm not] a great Priest fan but he [Halford] has an amazing voice.

He came out in the late 90's, which was a bit of a joke, I mean "Rob Halford is gay, what a surprise..." A guy who looks like he walked out of a gay leather club being gay? Who would have thought...

There is a HUGE difference between having a leather fetish (as Halford obviously does) and being a Leatherman.

Like I said above, "He would be laughed out of a 'twue' leather bar as a poser."  Too many think slapping leather on makes one a Leatherman, just as WAAAAaaayyy too many d-type wanna-bes think slapping a "domly name" on themselves makes them a Dom.  They do so in an attempt to figure out "What makes a Dom a Dom?" as the OP asks in the title to this thread.

// Crowd applaudes Lance's artful segue back to subject of thread. //

// Lance mounts his motorcycle and roars off stage, having learned a thing or two from Halford's stage costumes (the extreme to be avoided) and persona (make grand entrances and exits.) LOL! //

Hi Lance-
Rob Halford is not just a leatherman, he's into the "lifestyle" too.  He sings about it in his songs, and while I can't tell you how I know this [I have an "in" in the heavy metal world], he is also into BDSM.    Yes, he loves being a little over-the-top with it, but that's always been a part of his stage theatrics, and one of the things his fans and friends always loved about him.   But don't write him off as a poseur for it--he's more real than most of the people who pose online as "real Doms."

By the way....so is Joan Jett. So is Depeche Mode.  All into the scene.

Actually if you would go and find the interviews Halford did on the subject, you will find that he said he was regularly browsing through gay BDSM shops to find clothes. He took the look so much over the top that it was almost a parody, but still, anybody with the slightest gaydar wouldn't have ever taken him for straight. As for him being a dom? I don't know about that, he wore far too many collars for that, but that's nitpicking...

But I guess you want to discuss that now with plenty of wiki copies and show all you know, I simply can't be aresed with that, the whole point was that it was a bit funny that the whole usually so hetero focused macho metal scene was surprised when he came out, which I found really amusing, he never advertised the fact that he was gay before he came out, but he also didn't try to hide it. There are several interviews of him where he admitted to being "very sympathetic" towards the BDSM scene and then changed the subject.

As for a material making one a dom/me - not really, I know quite a few subs who have a fetish for certain materials, I'd still be a sadist if I'd have a fetish for lace or silk instead of leather... Though wearing a huge collar with a big D-ring is possibly a good sign that you aren't 100% twue dom....

Hausboy responds:
He admits to being "sympathetic" but he is a lot more than just that. The man has penned some serious songs about pleasure and pain, and he is very close-mouthed about his personal lifestyle for good reason. Rob has had to appear in court, more than once, facing charges that his music caused suicide [bullocks!], contained subliminal messages [more bullocks!] and he has repeatedly been chastised for "corrupting" youth.  And all this BEFORE he came out.  I am friends with a lot of roadies, who keep certain things private, as will I....but let's just say that he does more than just shop.

edited to make it clear what part was the post, and what part I was responding to....

If he can get in there while not standing, I'll be impressed. Also, I will be impressed if you can find a chick willing to attempt this.

For the record, I'm am not volunteering for this...

if she thinks he is he is, otherwise no amount of puffery will make it so

this was meant to be a reply to the thread

salemartist -> RE: What makes a Dom a Dom? (12/18/2010 8:26:48 AM)

in short:

the sincere answer to what makes a Dom am DOm.... a sub

the sarcastic answer.... a cool hat and a bad ass chair

DMFParadox -> RE: What makes a Dom a Dom? (12/18/2010 4:07:30 PM)

Nah. The sub does not make the dom; that's a cop out.

Sexual/"dominant glee" is a fair marker. If you have it, you have it.

deandorrena -> RE: What makes a Dom a Dom? (12/18/2010 4:26:49 PM)

All the play things in the world does not make you a Domm. A Domm is some one who takes complete control of their subs. They're some one for the subs to trust and beleive in. You need a firm hand and to know what each needs. With out subs you could never be a Domm.

osf -> RE: What makes a Dom a Dom? (12/19/2010 7:14:07 AM)

another, a dominant knows what he wants and isn't shy about telling her

ChampagneMojito -> RE: What makes a Dom a Dom? (12/19/2010 9:33:05 AM)

What makes a Dom a Dom? Well it's a whole host of characteristics that outwardly manifest their dominant personalities. Is it really any different than what makes any of us the people we are? There's just so much to it.

As a sub my question has always been what makes my the domme the right domme for me.

osf -> RE: What makes a Dom a Dom? (12/19/2010 10:14:17 AM)

and a dominant has to be a saint

CerVeza -> RE: What makes a Dom a Dom? (12/19/2010 10:15:57 AM)

By definition and common sense, I am a Dom.

I have read quite a few and heard quite a few stories about self titled "Masters" and "Dominates" since my return to CM that I am here late night thinking, "What makes a Dom a Dom"? I have my own opinions but I would like to hear from the community in words not links please what you think makes a Dom a Dom. What qualities should that person possess, what kind of temperament, etc... I know there is no cookie cutter formula its just something I was thinking about and well like all good hmmmm thinking about something moments thought I would share the question and see what others have to say.

God I just have to correct you but if you are pondering what makes someone a "Dominant"  as opposed to being able to "Dominate" then firstly know the difference. The person is the Dominant, the behavior is to dominate. If you are lucky.

osf -> RE: What makes a Dom a Dom? (12/20/2010 9:15:02 AM)

there are many attributes that can go into the making of a dominant

being nice, caring or a saint isn't part of it
