Angel  I buy stuff all the time, I use an ATM card though.  I don't carry money on me.

It's not hard to go out pick up a handful of what you need, and go use a plastic atm card to pay for it. I would have to be either very very young, or  severly retarded not to be able to do that much.  As it is, I am not, that retarded.

If you don't want to believe nobody ever taught me to count money or make change, fine, don't. But it's true.

I never said I couldn't find jobs, as in any job.  I said I am not capable of doing most the jobs availible to me, since a lot of them require pysical   labor, Labor I am not  currently  not able to do. So my options are pretty limited, to things like pushing carts, or being a greeter.

TFTB, all i can say is your last paragraph says a lot of the second post above.  Its not that you can't find jobs its you only want to do work that you want to do.   It seems you have the luxury of not having to work.   So the problem, to me, lies with you.   If you buy things, i am sorry, but your "no one ever taught me" concept doesn't wash with me.  You seem to be able to decipher basic math when you want to buy stuff for your crafts etc.   You can go on the computer and find websites that will teach you just about anything.   And nowadays, the computers do most things for the cashier all you have to know is how to count and make change for a dollar.  There are enough people out there seeking jobs right now where you should count yourself lucky you only want a job and not need a job.  You have the luxury of being able to say well i guess i could live with monotony for a while.  There are people out there who would kill for the monotony of a steadily paying job.  So the choice in this seems to be yours.  You have to decide how much you want a job, and then go out to see if you can get the one you want.  If you do, good for you, if you don't, then its up to you to correct the reason why.

I hope whatever you are seeking you find.

angel

So you have no clue how to make change for a dollar or count out dollar bills.  Say if the little screen says change is $13.87.   How old are you?  ATM cards haven't been around all that long wherein people use them as casually as they do now.

Sorry but i guess i just can't fathom someone not knowing how to count out dollar bills or change in nickle, dimes, quarters, and pennies.

Sign wavers usually don't need experience or special skills. Neither do private housecleaners, although you might have to do some advertising. If you work in fast food they will teach you how to use a register, and, if you're okay at math, you can learn how to count back change. Telemarketing is another idea.

As long as you're not working full time i would volunteer someplace- it will help you for the future, give you a name to put down for a reference. Other than that- take a class? There's probably lots of classes you could take at the community college, typing, computers, whatever, that would make you more marketable. How urgently do you need a job?

Look on craigslist. There's a lot of people now that are looking for holiday cleaning help. A one time thing might turn into more, down the road. Selling Christmas cookies? There's gotta be something. Don't give up.

Jeez, Barely...lighten up will you?  Beating your POV like it's a dead horse isn't going to get you anywhere.  We get that you can't believe what TFB is saying.....I just can't believe you have to be so nasty about it.

We don't all live in your perfect little world......thank goodness!

I am 28. I have been using an ATM card exclusively since I was 18.

Small stuff,  if I have  enough   coins nickles and dimes is ok,  But if you took say,100 dollars and asked me to break it down into 13. 87. No I wouldn't know how. Nor would I know how much change I was supposed to get back if you paid 100 and your bill was only 35 dollars.

Pam, yeah I have turned into an almost complete hermit, I hardly go out any more, and I don't socialize with any one outside my computer, Volunteering again would also get me out of my own little shell. It's probably not the best thing for me to be mostly a hermit. Maybe when I am a senior and I wanna be crochety and old, but not a young vibrant  woman. Also i have heard of people who volunteer and do a good job, being offered jobs when the next one the volunteer's been volunteering at  comes availible.

It's interesting you mention sign wavers I just thought of them, I see this one guy, he's always outside dressed up in a pickle for the company Mr pickle, He waves at the people driving by.

And of course now and then you see people sign waving for companies going out of sale, or sign wavers for new companies.

I'd say it's not urgent, Angel did pin point that correctly, that right now I want to work, not NEED to, so if I took some enrichment coourses,  boned up on some skill set classes, I'd have time to.

Okay that was what i was trying to figure out.  Cashiers don't do the math.  They simply make change.  So they may hand you 100 bucks but you input that into the computer and the computer tells you how much change to give back.
So you would be able to count out $13.87 out of 1s, 5, 10s?

TFTB, i am not being nasty, or trying to be, what i am saying is you have CHOSEN not to learn this if you are 28 years old.  Yet when i asked you said the schools and your parents never taught you.  That is what i think i am focusing on.  At 28, you could have learned by now, but you have chosen not too.  That is what i am trying to get across to you.  IF you want to be in the work force, the choices of what you LEARN to do now, is up to you.  If you want a job, you are going to have to find out what the job entails and then LEARN how to do the things you don't know how to do.

I work in law, i didn't know how to do motions and such when i first started out in law.  I didn't go to school to learn, so i had to gain the experience.  I worked damn hard to get where i am now without having to go back to school, and i did it by starting at the bottom and having people teach me the rest.    You can take what i am saying here as criticism and poor you or you can take it as someone saying you can do this IF you decide too.  Its why i won't except from you that you can't count change.  I don't believe it because to me you are intelligent.  You can do it if you want.  If you can't, then i guess you are right.

You may qualify for vocational rehab services in your state.

Have you tried them...and you may want to call them again to see what else they might have to offer even if you used them in the past.

Learning disabilities are not something people CHOOSE to have.  Gawd, do you even read before you start typing your KNOW IT ALL crappola?

CAPS.....I have no idea why I used them here.  I just FELT the need.

TFTB, check with the United Way.  I believe you can dial 211 no matter where you are and get them.  They have lots of resources available, and could hopefully point you in the right direction for some type of training to get back out in to the real world.

Good luck!

angelika, no, I'm not aware of most the services like that in Sacramento. I will have to have Daddy help me find these resources.  I was mostly thinking of jobs like walmart or a telemarketer or greeter, it never occured to me to check rehabilitation services and stuff..

I think you'd have to go up to 15, and get change back if you only had a 10 and a 5 . I'm not sure what the change would be though.

Ok, you're right the more correct thing to say would be, I was never taught to, and then, I never took the steps to learn, choosing instead to use my ATM or hand a wad of money to the cashier an they counted it.

So you would be able to count out $13.87 out of 1s, 5, 10s?

Thank you JAS.

I think here it's 411, to get a listing or a telephone number, but I'll check them out too.

TFTB, i didn't mean to put you on the spot, for that i apologize but i am a firm believer anyone can learn anything some people simply have to work harder at certain things than others.   You can learn anything you choose, that is what i am trying to say.   If you want to be a cashier, then you can learn to count out change if you want too.  I don't care what people told you in school, you are now your own person.  Forget what you have been told or what you think you can't and take a hold of your own education.  Yes, it may be hard and a struggle, you may have to spend 2x or 3x or 4x longer than some people in learning something but you have the ability to do it.   If you read what you have posted here they are simply excuses.  YOU can learn whatever it is you need to, because you are capable of taking control of your own mind and what you learn.  No its not easy and yes many times its easier to just remain stagnant.

Yes, you have been lazy when it comes to basic math, you have also put yourself in a vulnerable position.  It was easier to accept you "couldn't do it" or "no one taught me"  than it was to seek to learn how to do it when the system and your parents no longer controlled it.

Others may let you get away with saying you can't do this and that, but not me.  Others may say poor you, but i won't.  I believe everyone is able to learn basics, you can because if you couldn't, your intelligence wouldn't show through in your posting.

As you also said, you have time now, so its your choice.   You can learn stuff now, or you can wait until you NEED a job and then try and get one.  I have faith you are one who likes to be prepared.

angel

What gungadin said...

If you are going for part time, you can start with the shifts nobody else wants and that is usually a good way into the company. Same with volunteering for Charities, you meet people who can help you and train you...

Find something you like and you're good at and with the internet advertising your services shouldn't be hard...

Post your resume on a couple of local job boards, etc.
