It's interesting you mention sign wavers I just thought of them, I see this one guy, he's always outside dressed up in a pickle for the company Mr pickle, He waves at the people driving by.

Oh my god, i LOVE Mr. Pickles!!!! What's their sandwich with the turkey, cranberry, and the pepper jack cheese? Served hot with the spicy sauce? It's my favorite!

Can i tell you a secret? i've always secretly wanted to be that pickle guy. Last year, for Easter, i was the Easter bunny. But that's another story.

If you're learning disabled or have some sort of special needs, you might try calling your local EEOC. They might be able to help you.

LadyC I signed up for a job as an after school program person. I would of been in charge of entertaining the kids, helping with homework and enrichment and stuff. I didn't get the job, but it was a good first step. I like arts and crafts, and I would  of loved to work closely with the volunteer cordinator and shared my idea's with the kids. They didn't need any one to teach crafts at that time, but it's high time I checked again!

What gungadin said...

If you are going for part time, you can start with the shifts nobody else wants and that is usually a good way into the company. Same with volunteering for Charities, you meet people who can help you and train you...

Find something you like and you're good at and with the internet advertising your services shouldn't be hard...

Post your resume on a couple of local job boards, etc.

TFTB, you don't always get the jobs you apply for. I have to apply for ten to twenty before I get an interview.  Just keep plugging away.

Keep on trying and don't hesitate to call them up from time to time if they have another opening, it shows that that you are really interested and enthusiastic and that is what a lot of companies are looking for.

Getting knocked back in an interview is always a blow to the ego, but see the interview itself as a learning experience...

I intensely dislike the condition of those terminals.

Like the monks waiting outside the temple...

if you really want a job you'll have to deal with broken terminals and work your way through it.

It just helps if you go there and ask if they would keep you on file for any other openings as you like the company, blah blah and then maybe once a month just call HR...

TFB, dialling 211 will directly connect you to the United Way in most cities.  I know it works here in J'ville, cuz it was the first resource I tried when I lost my job.  They are a good place to start, they gave me the information about the state's Work Force offices and website.  In order to get unemployment here, you have to be registered with them.  They have all sorts of different areas for Job seekers, like building resumes and cover letters, job postings, veteran's resources.....a one stop job place.  I use the office here to print things, since my printer is kaput, and they are pretty much on the way to the interviews I've had.  They open up fairly early in the am, and there's no time limit (that I'm aware of, anyway) on computer usage, as long as you're using it for employment purposes.  They also have binders of positions not listed on the website wil application information.

The 211 line is a 24/7 line, so you can call and get someone anytime.  They were a life saver for me......I knew that contributing to them thru my workplace would help folks, I just never thought it'd be me!

Hi TFTB,

I know it can be very intimidating and frustrating to encounter so many obstacles, while looking for work. Don't give up! There are different organizations available to help you.

United Way has several different programs available for people looking for work, and they have case workers who are hired specifically as Client Advocates. They go out and speak to various employers on your behalf, and find work for people who have difficulty getting hired (people with felonies, handicapped/disabled indviduals etc.)

They also provide help with creating your resume, cover letters, reference lists as well.

Best of Wishes
WinD

Since you have some time, go to visit a career counselor through a service that your city might provide or a local Junior College see what sorts of career fields interest you. Find out what classes are necessary to get certain certificates or degrees. Also, a local adult education center might be able to provide short term, certification programs like becoming a phlebotomist (my cousin is doing that), and i received my CNA and medical assistant licenses through them.

As you stated, finding a job is more of a want than a need at this point, take the time to learn new skills and interests that will be applicable to a future career. Start small and build on that...you can do it.
