tazzygirl -> Fox News is detrimental to your intelligence (12/15/2010 10:22:31 PM)

Yet another study has been released proving that watching Fox News is detrimental to your intelligence. World Public Opinion, a project managed by the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland, conducted a survey of American voters that shows that Fox News viewers are significantly more misinformed than consumers of news from other sources. What’s more, the study shows that greater exposure to Fox News increases misinformation.

In eight of the nine questions below, Fox News placed first in the percentage of those who were misinformed (they placed second in the question on TARP). That’s a pretty high batting average for journalistic fraud. Here is a list of what Fox News viewers believe that just aint so:

•91 percent believe the stimulus legislation lost jobs
•72 percent believe the health reform law will increase the deficit
•72 percent believe the economy is getting worse
•60 percent believe climate change is not occurring
•49 percent believe income taxes have gone up
•63 percent believe the stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts
•56 percent believe Obama initiated the GM/Chrysler bailout
•38 percent believe that most Republicans opposed TARP
•63 percent believe Obama was not born in the U.S. (or that it is unclear)

The conclusion is inescapable. Fox News is deliberately misinforming its viewers and it is doing so for a reason. Every issue above is one in which the Republican Party had a vested interest. The GOP benefited from the ignorance that Fox News helped to proliferate. The results were apparent in the election last month as voters based their decisions on demonstrably false information fed to them by Fox News.

I read this and, at first... like we all dont know this!

Then, realizing how many people on these boards watch only Fox News, i figured i should go ahead and post these fascinating results!

Have fun!

I agree and I think they need to lose their license because they are nothing but a Republican propaganda machine brainwashing naïve Americans.

Lose their license for "free" speech ? The hell you say, but if you want it then you have to provide the entertainment.

Anyone who ONLY uses one outlet for their news and willingly swalloows their pablum so they can 'belong' is, in My opinion, less intelligent.

Doesnt matter if that outlet is Right, Left or Center.

KenDckey -> RE: Fox News is detrimental to your intelligence (12/16/2010 6:00:02 AM)

I don't watch any of them.   They all taint, distort, slant and othewise screw up the news.  Look at the beloved Katie Couric   her liberal slant to straight forward reporting just makes me puke.

A journalist's job is to report the facts and let the reading/seeing/hearing public intrepret them.   No bias, no distortion, just the facts.

Also, the 1st amendment protects political speech and just cause you don't like the slant doesn't mean you have to listen to it and doesnt' qualify for losing their license.   JUST SAY NO   lol   don't watch it, if enough people don't watch it, their ratings will go down and they will have to change.

thishereboi -> RE: Fox News is detrimental to your intelligence (12/16/2010 6:04:31 AM)

I don't know about that one. Does someone become ignorant because they watch a certain show or do they watch the show because they are ignorant?

And if we followed brain's advise and outlawed fox news, would people suddenly become smarter?

Personally I find it sad that some of the people in this country are trying so hard to fuel the hate between the right and the left. Like we don't have enough hate in this world.[8|]

Note: no brain, that comment does not mean I think you had a good idea. In fact that attitude is why I am really glad you live in Canada and have absolutely no say in our laws here.

Still, a liberal slant is one thing, lying through your teeth...is quite another. Look kinkroids I've been writing here for years...Goebbels would have been proud (Nazi propagandist) and practically drooling over Fox for its propaganda value.

Charles6682 -> RE: Fox News is detrimental to your intelligence (12/16/2010 6:58:00 AM)

All of these news stations are biased these days.I dont agree with Fixed news but I dont believe they should be outlawed. Here in America,we have Freedom of Speech in our Land.It would go against what America stands for.Even if the speech is digusting and ill advised.

Seeing how he is advocating for censorship in my country, Lucy, I think the answer would be never. Some of us down here take our First Amendment very seriously.

samboct -> RE: Fox News is detrimental to your intelligence (12/16/2010 7:12:15 AM)

Wrong problem. Let's say a liberal organization had a similar market dominance as Fox news, where in many markets, they're the only news source and conservatives bellyached that the country was getting smarter. (oops...) Would they have a point? Well, yes.

Look, the problem isn't that Fox "News" isn't news- the problem is that all too often, they're the only game in town. So the theory of a free press goes out the window due to corporate censorship- there's no competition.

Two options- Fox "News" needs to be chopped up into much smaller companies and not allowed a monopoly position in any market.

Or- back in the bad old days, before Ronnie Rayguns- TV stations as part of their broadcast license, had to air opposing viewpoints. Back then, some of the media were so aggravated about Rayguns that the only time they'd give the Neocon viewpoint was what was mandated. Rayguns "generously" allowed the FCC to change their rulings and not force opposing viewpoints so stations didn't have to carry the Neocon viewpoint at 3 in the morning. Clearly, the end result some three decades later is that the Republican corporations took over the airwaves.

Given the current hydra of Fox "News" - I'd chop the company up. They shouldn't be allowed to own TV, radio, and print- those should all be competing companies. But I wouldn't censor the content of Fox "News" as long as there were commercially viable alternatives.

Even out here in the boonies we get all the major networks on regular tv.

cuckoldmepls -> RE: Fox News is detrimental to your intelligence (12/16/2010 7:36:35 AM)

I'll tell you what's detrimental to your intelligence. We are $13 trillion in debt, and the politically correct media has done nothing but supercharge Bush Policies by promoting Obama from the get go. We now have more Illegal immigration, more government, more spending, continued loss of civil liberties with the patriot Act, and the man who actually said we should renegotiate NAFTA has been going around the world seeking out free trade agreements. In addition, they know they can't raise income taxes, since Americans will vote them out, so now they are using every trick in the book to pass backdoor taxes to fund their socialist schemes. They actually want a 1% financial transaction tax, and they want to increase gasoline taxes to 15% among hundreds of their ideas. Democrats are all about taking your paycheck, increasing spending and creating an artificial economy, then giving you what is left.  If Americans hadn't of thrown them out in the last election, can you imagine how far these lefty loons would go without any opposition?

As far as FOX news goes, the liberals have every other station in the country in their back pocket. They absolutely refuse to report anything that is politically incorrect. Now how can you call it unbiased reporting when they won't even show the politically incorrect viewpoint. Fox News Is the only outlet, that is even halfway willing to show the politically incorrect viewpoint.

Remember, NPR fired Juan Williams because he accidentaly spoke the truth. It's NPR that needs to be shut down, not Fox news. Think about it. It's a free country and as long as it is not taxpayer funded, any network should be able to air the politically incorrect side.

NPR since it is taxpayer funded is the only network that should be shut down, since they are obviously nothing but a liberal mouthpiece.
