The Bible is repleat with stories of smiting and things like that. It probably can be interpreted just as nastily. If their book indicates that they are not Men of peace, so be it. So does "ours".

People are the problem.

Many predicted the fall of the Soviet Union before 1980. So, it couldn't have had much to do with "Star Wars."

"Different setup than ours"

Yes. Ours is not based on seething hatred of others.

"Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods.  In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully.  If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock.  Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it.  Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God.  That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt.  Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction.  Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you.  He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors.  'The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him.' " (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)

Ours wasn't exactly hatred free and theirs isn't exactly hatred based.

When it comes to the question of why the two are so different now, I agree with DarkSteven.

To be fair to him, Reagan's escalation of the "who can piss the highest?" contests that previous Presidencies had set in motion during his term in office probably sped up the collapse at least a little, despite the Soviet Union being pretty boracic already.
Of course, he pretty thoroughly nobbled your own economy in the process as well...

Just as a point of comprehension of the English language- it is not racist to be Islamaphobic

quote:

Islamaphobic

I don't give a monkeys nuts who says otherwise, Islamaphobic is an unfounded dread and dislike of Muslims, which results in practices of exclusion and discrimination and if that's not racist then the word racist doesn't exist.

The interesting bit about the whole "they ain't a race so I ain't a racialist" thing is that in Marxist terms race is defined through cultural or religious groups rather than genetically. In those terms, it's unqustionably racist, even before you take onboard the fact that the eeevil mooslims these people are scared of are almost always members of a different race* to the Islamophobes.

*(Genetic, not Marxist)

I actually prefer "twatwaffle" to "ditch pig". I'm having that.

(My point though, was that there's other stuff that defines ethnicity besides somebody's genetic race alone. It's perfectly possible to be racist based on the other stuff. Just look at the attitude the Indians and Pakistanis have to each other...)

I believe Termy is right…it is the people not the religions of this world that hate kill and maims. Hell there is plenty of killing by those of no religion…People kill out of fear, greed, anger, and pleasure period not religion.

Now, as in past history, religion is used to justify and hide the evil of mankind. All three of the major religions specifically forbid the killing of innocents and preach peace. Yet still… men and women warp these teachings to influence others in order to pursue their personal agendas.

If their were no religion do you really believe fear, greed, anger and pleasure would cease to exist?

Of course they wouldn't cease to exist, but people might have to become a bit more honest about their application, instead of hiding behind ceiling cat...

Perhaps but what difference will that make? They will find other reasons for justifications..nothing will change

There were a lot of contributing factors to the fall of the Soviet Union. The cost of grain and food imports, skyrocketing oil prices, over borrowing, internal corruption, glasnost  before perestroika had a chance to work, the cost in life and treasure in the nine year Afghan war, and yes the arms build up, and, and, and, so forth, and, etc....

Seriously, anyone with a smattering of knowledge of modern military weaponry cannot take seriously the idea that AQ wants to drop American civilian aircraft. Destroy the US economy?

Sadly, the illogic is in the U.S. reaction, which did the real work of AQ for them.

That's debatable.
I'd have a lot more sympathy for this argument that the Ottoman empire was the last repository for the dregs of the Roman Empire if the fuckers hadn't first destroyed the eastern Empire and burned the library at Alexandria.

quote:

Julius Caesar accidentally burned the library down when he set fire to his own ships to frustrate Achillas' attempt to limit his ability to communicate by sea.[2] Edward Gibbon describes how the daughter library was also destroyed by Theophilus, Bishop of Alexandria, who ordered the destruction of the Serapeum in 391.

It was a CHRISTIAN Bishop of Alexandria that burned the library the second time it was burned, NOT the Muslims, Ottoman's or any other non-christian group you may want to blame.

It is a sad fact that the teaching of history is sorely lacking in American Schools... Unless of course you actually go to college and study history under a prof that believes that the truth should be taught over political correctness.

Here's a few. It doesn't include articles in business magazines and op-eds

Andrei Amalrik - Will the Soviet Union Survive Until 1984? - 1970   Emmanuel Todd - The Final Fall: An essay on the decomposition of the Soviet sphere - 1976   Ravi Batra - The Downfall of Capitalism and Communism – 1978   Whittaker Chambers - Cold Friday – 1964   Michel Garder - The Death Struggle of the Regime in Soviet Russia – 1965   Ludwig Von Mises - Socialism: An Economic and Sociological Analysis - 1921

It was MY point. I said that there were people that saw it coming before Ronald Reagan was president so to give him credit for winning the Cold War is ridiculous.
