Yep.  I take issue with the anti gun advocates using the "if guns were banned criminals wouldnt have them" logic.  No, Im afraid if guns were made illegal, ONLY the criminals would have them.

Americans own guns because the Constitution allows us to do so. Many people have argued that that clause is outdated, and really refers to the militia's right to bear arms, not to individuals'. Many people (myself included) feel that individual gun ownership is not a good thing and that the Constitution ought to be changed. Nevertheless, there has been no amendment repealing the right to gun ownership, and there won't be one anytime in the near future, because the majority of people are happy with the law as it is. i don't know what to tell you. That's democracy.

P.S.- What's with you Brits and soccer riots? (Or, excuse me, "football").

To be fair, anyone owning a gun would automatically become a criminal by definition.  I wish there were a more concise way to say that those folks who would commit crimes anyway, would continue to hold onto their guns.

Which is why they're not going to be banned. Too many people would be become "criminals" for posessing guns which, as DarkSteven says, they are NEVER going to give up. i don't know why everyone's worried, that law is not going to get passed anything soon (even if i wish it would).

"I think it is maybe 25 years since I seen a real gun in person."

Loaded, if you don't feel different you are an ass. I do not mean that you think you're some kind of special, I mean that you realize that you are able to take life. That means no getting fucked up, no getting into heated arguments unless you have one hell of alot of self control. I am not kidding.

I know two people who have had their ass kicked in a fight, who had a gun on them at the time. I don't mean it was taken away, I mean they wouldn't pull it. Try that for self control.

"More USA people died from vehicle accidents than from being shot in the Vietnam war during the same period, if I recall correctly. "

I don't think tht is correct. However more people are killed in medical MISTAKES, I don't mean they would've died, I mean MISTAKES, every year, than in the total Vietman conflict. That is by the AMA figures, not mine.

Response time for police on a violent crime in most areas of the country approaches an hour. No, I'm not talking about in cities; the majority of the country is not urban.

For many years after leaving the military, I did not own a personal firearm. Then, I was waked at 2am by a fellow trying to kick in my door to hide from the police that were entering his meth lab. He was armed with a pistol and a small axe.

I now travel with a pistol and a shotgun. I'd rather be tried by twelve than carried by six.

What is it with you Americans and guns? Why do you need them? I know it's in your constitution as a right to hold a gun,but why in this day do people insist on upholding a right that was relevant in 1780 but does not seem relevant today. It does seem to me that you have an awful lot of terrible gun incidents....

Rather, why not exercise my U.S. Constitutional Right to bear and keep arms??

Some believe that guns are the problem. Instead I believe that people who do not know how to properly handle firearms are the problem, which thankfully does not represent countless responsible gun owners. However I did add a graphic for you. A gun that cannot be used for self defense. Odd at best, aye!

Take care!

Actually, it stems from the American Revolution. One of the first targets the British army went after was the Mass. militia's armory at Lexington and Concord. Granted, they didnt get it, but their idea was clear: Take our guns, and we are unable to defend ourselves.

I find it funny that everyone talks about America's gun problem, but yet Canada has more guns than we do, and they dont have half the murder rate we do.

I guessed you were from the UK even before I looked at your profile.  My first guess is that like a lot of other folks from the UK, you have no idea just how BIG the US is.  To give you just a little idea, you can fit the entire UK inside the United States about 37 and one half times.

Consider that the population of the UK is around 62 million and the US is 310 million... we have around five times the number of people in nearly 38 times the amount of space.

Consider further, that a tenth of our population (around 26 million) live just in the 10 largest cities.

So guess what?  We have a LOT of wide open space.

As has been mentioned by others in this thread, protection from wild life, personal protection due to longer police response times, in addition to hunting are all very good reasons that many Americans feel very strongly about our right to own firearms.

Haven't you seen the movies, the aggressive aliens invasion or the mass rising of the undead always starts here in America!

also note that after 911, gun sales increased significantly, which can only mean most Americans were ready to shoot down jumbo jets with small arms

really thou, why is this thread here, it'd be fine in the politicy section

as for gun laws, its odd that people point to the second amendment when protecting the right to bear arms

when its pretty clear that the second amendment was meant to protect the peoples ability to overthrow the gov when ever the need arisen

So it's pretty clear that we shouldn't legally have handguns(completely useless in an uprising these days)

But fighter jets and RPG's should be legal in all fifty
