Good god, I am watching the psycho from the UK right now I believe you call him the crossbow killer. One woman was cut into over 80 pieces, before being killed a torturous death that must have been the stuff of a horror movie. If one of those women had a fucking firearm and used it that man would not have done what he did.

So tell me again why having guns is a bad thing and why the UK is better? If by better you mean more at risk of being killed by psychos, yes, they are.

My equalizer of choice. It fires 8 rounds, not the standard 6, and I love it. By love, I mean love it like something that could absolutely save my life and yes as Zevar mentioned I know how to use it, I am an excellent shot. I also don't panic under those types of situations, I know, I have pulled a handgun before on some would be robbers at my house, it wasn't this one, it was an older .38. Did I get robbed? No. Pretty simple.

S&W 9mm. 16 round clip with another round in the chamber and a spare 16 round clip. If someone threatens my life I am not fucking around.

FR,

I love these threads about guns.  We Brits have it carefully and patiently explained to us, in the most sober and reasonable terms, just how much of a necessary evil they are and how, tragically, the average American citizen must just sigh, accept reality and go to the gun-shop to get him or herself tooled up.  Just like you need a good pair of shears to keep those garden weeds at bay.

And then, once all that dreary stuff is out of the way . . . Yay!  It's now time to get on with all the fun stuff about how fabulously glamorous and sexy guns are, whether in the rugged hand of a lasso-wielding cattleherder, or in the exquisitely-manicured hand of an elegant lady!

Frigging hell do you people have a different culture out there.  This stuff actually makes me shudder.

Pity it doesn't make you read what people are actually saying. That might save you the trouble of having to make up outlandish positions to ridicule.

TheHeretic -> RE: GUNS (12/30/2010 10:05:53 PM)

Gun nerds have their toys, and love to talk about them, Peon, but they really aren't all that representative. I own a couple of firearms and the only time I really pull them out is when young people are coming into my home, and I physically inspect that they are unloaded, and the trigger locks are secured, before and after the visit.

Now if you want to haul your grandma's old TV set out into the desert, I'll grab a few boxes of ammo.

Anyone who breaks in will likely be dealt with by the dogs, long before I even get the first #4 shell racked into the chamber of the riot gun anyway, but it's nice to know it is there.

It IS a different culture.  That said, I was brought up in a liberal household and had it inculcated in me at an early age that guns are evil.  I still don't like them at all and never plan to have one in my home, but believe that the consequences of outlawing them are far worse than accepting them as a part of life.

GreedyTop -> RE: GUNS (12/30/2010 10:52:35 PM)

what Steven said... at least until 9/11..

at that point I decided that I wanted to take lessons, and get a weapon (I still haven't...).  9/11 put visions of the movie Red Dawn in my head, and I decided I want to be able to defend myself if needed.

ok, hokey, I know.

Fortunately, I currently live in a neighborhood where I don't feel like I need to arm myself (hell.. I leave the front door unlocked when I leave the house to run errands).

tazzygirl -> RE: GUNS (12/30/2010 11:08:30 PM)

My grandfather had, and my father has, many guns. We were taught at an early age they were in no way, shape or form a "toy". My father, being military, kept a tight ship when it came to his firearms, always under lock and key, never loaded.

My ex had one hand gun. I saw it once in the 4 years i lived with him.

Not everyone equates owning a gun to being sexy.

i don't believe that at all. What i do believe is that no society is perfect, and, for better or worse, i live in THIS society, where guns will continue to be legal for the forseeable future. We yanks don't expect you to like every aspect of our culture. We don't like every aspect of yours. We just expect you to accept that we have the right to make our own laws, and participate in out own culture, with or without your approval.

MercTech -> RE: GUNS (12/31/2010 2:27:37 AM)

Yes, the U.S. originated with a gun culture. And the proponents of the "nanny state" really hate this.

You have to look at the late 1700s and early 1800s to catch the origination for this. The huge influx of settlers and forced resettlement of people that objected to being disarmed and oppressed in their home countries in Europe. It was built into the constitution that a person has a RIGHT to keep and bear arms. And if you put the wording in historical context, "a well regulated militia" would be in modern speach "a well trained militia"... people were to keep and bear arms so they knew how to shoot to defend the country from European aggression.

Having to have a "permit" to own a firearm is an anomaly in the U.S. But it is common to need a "permit" to carry a concealed weapon in public. Also, it has been tested in court that a concealed carry permit cannot be denied without a pressing proven reason if local law allows for any permitting at all.

What this actually amounts to in practice:
In the majority of the U.S.; if you want to buy a firearm, you go do so. You sign a form stating you have no mental defects and have never been convicted of a felony. You preset positive identification. A background check is done. And you obtain your firearm.
You are not allowed to carry the firearm in public unless you have a permit. Many jurisdictions require passing a certified firearm safety course before a permit is granted.
It is not legal to transport a firearm in a vehicle with the firearm accessible to the driver while operating the vehicle and firearms and ammunition are to be transported in separate compartments. (Actually, this is a Federal Department of Transportation regulation applying to federal highways but adopted by most local jurisdictions.)

What is done in regards to owning firarms in the privacy of the home and on your own property is NOT regulated. The regulations only come into effect when you enter an area where public safety might be compromised.

Game hunting is a separate issue and local jurisdictions have applicable laws and licesing for hunting game on open lands.

Note that in no way do criminals follow such laws but only the law abiding citizen.. the very ones that would be effected by any gun control measures.

It is my own opinion that "gun control" means emasculating the ability of a citizen to protect themselves while not providing any increase in security for the general population. In every state that has gone for elaborate control of citizen ownership of firearms; it only means the criminals are the ones with easy access to firearms.

It all comes down to a control issue. An unarmed population is much easier to control.

Panda, are we looking at the same thread?   There are now multiple, big pictures of shiny handguns in it.  People have been slavering over the amount, and power, of guns that they own.  Do you have any idea of just how startling people this side of the pond would find Greedy's comment, "That is a HAWT pic.. love the nicely manicured fingers against the deadly weapon.. NICE juxtaposition!"?

Yes, I see that.  Honestly, I understand how the gun culture grew up in the USA and how it relates to myriad aspects of history that are peculiar to that country.  For me, though, guns as necessary is one species of argument; guns as glamorous, sexy things is something entirely different.

I honestly do not see how you even make the connection that saying hawt pic and folks posting pictures equals slavering (wtf ever that even means, maybe the english way of spelling slathering?).

Do yall not watch any movies that have guns in them?  You telling me you never looked at Angelina, as she held a weapon, and thought fuck thats one hot chick.

Beauty can be seen in many things, even things we may not like.

You are startled by the light hearted way Americans discuss guns.  I am startled that you fail to notice the discussions about safety and how we were taught from a young age that guns are not to be played with.

Stating one like a picture does not equal that person being a gun freak or an unsafe person.  Calm down, we are not coming across the pond to get yall.  We are happy enough to have run you off North America.

Aynne88 -> RE: GUNS (12/31/2010 6:29:25 AM)

Nice call JustAnotherSub. Of course men find that sexy, just like when a chick pulls into the gas station on a bike, fully dressed out in leather or driving a really hot sports car, points for being a 6 spd and loaded with HP. Put a hot chick on one of my job sites in the summertime, with shorts, steeltoed boots, and a tank top? Oh my god it's a safety hazard. [;)]. We had a painter on the crew for several summers that looked like a young Gina Gershon, those guys were so turned on when she strapped on a harness I don't know how they got anything done.  Anything that is traditionally male and being done or used by a sexy woman gets all men in a lather. The red blooded ones I know anyway. Why do you think they put Angelina in all those bad ass gun wielding roles?

Yeah I think my latest gun is sexy, it's a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, and I find knowing it will be capable of blowing a hole in someone if they bust into my home pretty frigging hot too.

Slathering = spreading thickly, e.g. as butter on bread.  Slavering = letting saliva dribble from the mouth.  From the WordWeb Dictionary.  I hope that helps.

Relax, JAS.  I'm not concerned about being run off North America, just as I'm not concerned about telling Americans how to run their society the way they see fit.  There's no need to be so sensitive about it.

I agree with Tazzy, My dad and my brothers all still own guns.
Hand guns and long guns. I myself have owned several.
But as another poster said, my dogs are going to get an intruder long before I get out a gun.
It is nice to know it is there if I need it.
Is it wrong to own the dogs I own?

Happy New Year All
