I loved your post, Winnie, it brought tears to my eyes. I also lost my father to cancer, so I can relate, but that's not why I'm writing.

Not only could he be a "Classic Dominant", but he sounds like a wonderful and inspirational Classic human being. The kind we see less and less of as time goes by.

Thank you, and yes he was.

I still see those traits in others, but yep, not nearly as often as I'd' like. So instead, I just try my best to be the person that I'd like to see in others. I even succeed, every now and then

It makes sense to me, that people are looking for the template of what the image of a classic dominant is - beause the traits that reveal a person as a dominant, aren't immediately apparent in a picture or a profile. You really have to KNOW the person, to learn those things. With all the competition, I can understand why someone would want to stand out in the crowd. I respect and understand an individuals desire to be seen, and to stand out - but whenever I see the stereotypical photo of a posturing dominant, I can't help but be amused. Honestly, if a Dominant REALLY wants to strike fear into the heart of a submissive, he should smile....Smiles can be scary. Smiles and clowns.

Sorry, but didn't we just devote a ton of pages on the What Makes a Dom a Dom thread?

I doubt you will find any more adjectives or thoughts that what went on in that one.

*tsk* *eyeroll*

THAT thread was for Contemporary Dom's, not for Classic Dom's! You KNOW we keep things specifically labelled in here!!!

Smacks self! Oh right, I forgot about that. It is like Classic Coke vs. Contemporary Coke.

It is the same crap with better marketing.

Perhaps we should call them Vintage Doms since vintage is SO in these days.

Retro Doms? Or Shabby-chic Doms? Shabby-chic is in these days, too!

So I guess what I am saying is that there might only ever be a ~best fit~ between Old Guard traditions and innovation but it will be those ethics that withstand the test of time that will remain the classic elements of any power dynamic role and not just that of being dominant

Well said and with your normal insightness.

Since I consider myself waaaaay above that (new meat is acceptable but), what's better than "classic"?

How about "vintage dom"?

No ageism intended ;-)

CR,

Superb list.

So glad you included "geek with nice glasses" as I don't make the 'tall' category in many cases..

I guess we could throw in a little bit of Donald Trump, just for massive wealth. And he has to have a House named after either himself, a wild animal, or a mythical creature. He has a large collection of whips, crops, restraints, butt-plugs, and a dungeon furnished with crosses, benches, swings, a mini-bar stocked with beverages and treats for aftercare, and a sofa. He has an extensive checklist of his submissive's likes and dislikes, from which he never dreams of deviating, as well as a fountain pen with a large plume for signing the contract. He requires no safe word, because he just "knows". Because He is a Dominant, He requires capital letters in front of all titles and pronouns that refer to Him. His very soul exudes truth, justice, and especially, honor. When it comes to etiquette, Emily Post is his bitch.

windchymes,

Well seems that the Trump image with a little of chuck does it for you......... good thinking.

Of course we'd never know as you rarely, if ever, provide your own viewpoint.

I'm really interested in what you, CelticPrince, considers to be a classic dominant.

Retro Dom?? Shabby chic Dom?? What ever happened to the John Wayne or Robert Duvall kind of Dom?

You know that kind? Respectful of the hired help, because they're working for him just like he's working for someone else?

So I'm listening to Frank Sinatra's "The Heart of the Matter" album (I know, I'm a strange 26yr. old) and it suddenly dawned on me... Classic Dominant! He was suave, confidently masculine, could rock a felt fedora, and had shady ties to the mafia (i.e. a dark-side). Not to mention marrying a 21yr. old Mia Farrow when he was 50!

Hello CP -
I'm not sure what you are looking for here, but I can tell you the type of man that resonates for me as an authentically dominant man. Keith Carradine in the guise of Frank Lundy on Dexter. Strong, calm, self-assured, fun, smart, grounded, driven, sensual. All he did was be himself, and his being himself called Debra to him. She started having lunch at 1:00 because he did. It was the perfect illustration for me of what I often talk about as "a man needs to inspire."

sunshinemiss,

A perfectly sound approach to describe the right characteristics. I never watch that particular show but I do knoe Kieth's persona.
Thanks for your input.

A true dominant,

I believe there is no such thing as a classic dominant because each individual slave/sub/switch idolises a specific Dom! Obviously one thing that is clear between all Dom's is the power they ahve over the others who serve.

I think we cannot judge what is classic, but what each individual prefers and that is why there is a journal to express and a list of likes and dislikes.

A classic Dom, is what we the slaves each desire!

Sissy,

I look like the "Classic" Dominant. If we're using the same standard we'd use for cars, of course. Actually, in that case I'd be considered "Antique".....
