The motivation behind both were politics and greed. The tool used in both was religion. How hard is that to understand?

[sm=m23.gif] Back to the name calling huh. Just so that you know demonizing those who disagree with you doesn't constitute evidence that your opinion is correct.

What name calling was there in that post. The fact that I called your position hypocritical?

My Dear Wormwood,

The woman didn't demonize you, you little imp. Being narrow-minded isn't evil. But bearing false witness is. How do you expect to ever succeed in your mission if you keep revealing your nature like this? Our Father Below will have your tail sauteed for lunch if He finds out. Do you remember nothing from your training? Once they recognize you, you're finished. You must exercise subtlety. Get yourself an English dictionary if you think it will help.

Your affectionate uncle,

Screwtape

I find myself persuaded on one. His assigning full moral responsibility to the Muslim world in his scenario is unjustifiable. It takes two to tango.

Does he assign full moral responsibility to the Muslim world? I didn't get that. It would seem to me that if one were to commit an unconscionable crime, that person would be the criminal not someone else. I would argue that Harris is pointing out that the Muslim world has the ability to change the Muslim world in ways which we as outsiders do not.

You make a valid point.

Unfortunately I have resigned from discussion of Harris so feel unable to pursue the matter any further.

Unh... when did self-defense become an unconscionable crime?

Fair enough.

tazzygirl -> RE: Pope Says God is Behind the Big Bang (2/7/2011 2:39:48 PM)

You are avoiding question while returning to pouting and foot stomping. Your patterns are becoming predictable.

Ooooooh, CS Lewis. I love the Screwtape Letters: loads better than the more famous novels, imo.

[;)] I would have used other descriptives, but, once again, bow to your wisdom.

tazzy, I am interested if you feel the link describes violence between two religious groups ie. violence for purely or largely religious reasons:

A Muslim mob burned churches and clashed with police in Indonesia on Tuesday as they demanded the death penalty for a Christian man convicted of blaspheming against Islam, police said.

Two days after a Muslim lynch mob killed three members of a minority Islamic sect, crowds of furious Muslims set two churches alight as they rampaged in anger over the prison sentence imposed on defendant Antonius Bawengan, 58.

A court in the Central Java town of Temanggung had sentenced the man to five years in jail, the maximum allowable, for distributing leaflets insulting Islam.

But this only enraged the crowd, who said the sentence was too lenient, police said.

"Today was the climax of the trial ... The mob shouted that he should receive the death sentence or be handed over to the public," Central Java province police spokesman Djihartono said.

"There are two churches that have been burned. The windows were shattered and the roofs were charred ... There is also another church that was damaged."

About 1,500 protesters took to the streets and pelted stones at the police, who responded with tear gas and fired warning shots into the air. One police vehicle was set ablaze, Antara news agency reported.

They chanted "kill, kill" outside the court and "burn, burn" as they set upon the churches.

"There were about 1,500 people who protested against 1,000 police members. The situation is calm now," Djihartono said

When it results in the killing of innocent bystanders, one can argue transferred intent of course but I consider that more of a legal fiction than a moral reality.

I was responding to your post on slavery, you didn't ask any questions. All you did was vilify those who don't swallow your assertions.

Looks like a question to me. Then again, you are good at avoiding most questions.

tazzygirl -> RE: Pope Says God is Behind the Big Bang (2/8/2011 8:17:14 PM)

According to your posting, I see only one group. A muslim mob wanting the death of a christian man who had been passing out leaflets. I think what you are asking is if religion is the motivation. Appears to be, but I dont know all the details.

Yes. It's sensible not to be definitive on such thin evidence but it does appear that religious tension is the major motivating factor.

I'm unaware if the US media carries such reports but lots of little incidents like this occur all the time in places like Indonesia India Pakistan and so on. We get to hear about them here probably because they're pretty close to us.

By all means ignore what I'm actually saying in order to attack me.

I'm generally good about answering your questions, certainly better than you are at answering mine. I know that I haven't been as prompt of late and that's been frustrating for you. Sometimes in this thread I've gone one whole day without responding to you. Please understand that I'm in the last couple of weeks of prep before setting out on a 2,175 mile hike.

As for your position above, I feel no more need to argue with you about that then I do to argue with rule about circumcision. How hard is that to understand?
