Termyn8or -> RE: The South shall rise again??? (1/12/2011 12:18:24 PM)

Over the last several years I think about three or four state legisltions had it on the floor, but it never went anywhere. Due to Texas' Constitution they could, they reserved the right to do it, but really, in plain terms, it just ain't gonna happen. The militia types latch onto it and think it's a big thing though.

It would be interesting though, I could see it now. Rather than paying federal taxes they could get foreign aid LOL.

If that's true, then WHAT was the point of this thread? i still don't know what question the OP is asking.

Charles, can you give us some clarification? Otherwise, we're going to be discussing the price of bubble gum in a minute.

gungadin09 -> RE: The South shall rise again??? (1/12/2011 1:14:51 PM)

What a thread. i would chide people for not staying on topic, but it's unclear what the topic is, if there even is one.

IS THIS A THREAD ABOUT:

Comparing Northern and Southern intolerance?

the resentment of each side surrounding the Civil War?

whether the North would have reacted differently if THEY had lost...and whether that sort of anger is justified?

whether people in the deep South are more intolerant of Yankees or blacks?

Which part of the country is the most racist?

Which part of the country is the most anti-gay?

Which part of the country is more anti-Federal?

Whether warm or cold climate affects culture?

Which part of the country has more regional pride... and whether that is okay?

Whether Florida, or Texas, can be considered part of the South?

Why there is political tension between the North and the South?

Whether the North handled the Reconstruction properly?

Whether or not many slaves were criminals?

Whether or not the people who sold slaves were criminals in their own time?

Whether or not we can look back on that behavior and call it "criminal"?

What degree of tolerance we have towards people who practiced slavery: today, at the time of the Civil War, and in ancient history?

Whether the people sold as slaves to the Europeans were first slaves of warring African tribes?

Whether the terms "the North" and "the federal government" can be used interchangeably?

Whether slavery, economics, culture, or a combination, were the reason for the Civil war?

Whether (by definition) you have to break the law in order to be a criminal?

Whether modern secession is likely or unlikely?

Whether modern secession is confined to the South?

Whether some kinds of bigotry are more innocent or acceptable than others?

Whether people who call others bigots are themselves bigots for thinking so?

Whether being tolerant of bigotry is itself bigotry?

Whether this thread is about secession?

Whether this thread is about bubble gum?

Whether this thread is about nothing?

I like bubble gum.

Did you know you can get it sugar free now?

That way it doesn't cause tooth decay.

And you won't have to drink the fluoride the evil government is poisoning you with.

Wait..........am I on the right thread?

Hillwilliam -> RE: The South shall rise again??? (1/12/2011 1:45:47 PM)

I think that folks who claim to "know" where the most bigoted and racist Americans live should google "White Supremacist Groups" and look where they are headquartered.

It's an eyeopener.

"Whether modern secession is likely or unlikely?"

.....that would be an intriguing discussion. i think the consensus would probably be that it would be highly unlikely, but the various states right to do so probably needs reaffirming from time to time.

But your body doesn't metabolize sorbitol the same way it does sugar. That's assuming they're not using aspartame or something else ... are those chemicals truly safe?  [;)]

Back to the original post-

Based on Haley Barbour's recent misty-eyed fondness for the pre-Civil rights era in the South, telling us all how good it was; And Virginia's strenuous declarations that black people fought for the Confederacy, and were damn glad to be property of white folks; and South Carolina's warm embrace of its Confederate heritage...yeah, I would say there is in fact a small but apparently growing problem of Confederate sympathizers in America.

Ironic, of course, because the Confederacy was the only true treasonous movement that ever gained a foothold here. The Communist party at its zenith only dreamed of the support the Confederacy still holds over sections of America;

While the Confederacy was by all accounts a monstrous evil, a force both traitorous and opposed to the very principles of America, we have at least one sitting Senator from Alabama who is named after not one, but 2 Confederate war heroes.

There was a time when I thought we could laugh off the Stars and Bars flags in the rear window of pickup trucks as some quaint cultural tic, but not any more.

I don't know why we are any more accepting that flag than a swastika since they seem to be on par with each other.

servantforuse -> RE: The South shall rise again??? (1/12/2011 6:03:31 PM)

I am pretty sure that I have never agreed with Animus, until now. That flag is a part of history but it is dispicable and in my mind should not be flown.

How about ...

Whether some people still cling desperately to cherished stereotypes?

The answer to "which part of the country is more  " - - - - - "  is addressed here below.

Thank you.

Wrong:the first treasonous movement were the revolutionaries in 1776..treason against the then ruling power.

One day we WILL get the colonies back!!!

Which is just about as likely as the South rising again lol

Charles6682 -> RE: The South shall rise again??? (1/12/2011 9:36:40 PM)

AnimusRex,you made some good points.Me personally,I find the old"stars and bars" to be in the same league as Swastika.I understand heritage and being proud of your history. However, this flag has a long standing history of respresenting racism and intolerance at its worse.

Why try to cookie cutter the facts,no matter how one wants to twist it.The South did some horrible things as recently as the 1960s.
