One suggestion, if you have the time - go for walks and get some greens there for adding to salads.  Dandelions, etc.  Free and very nutritious!  Euell Gibbons has written several books on wild foods.

But you should add that wild foods should not be picked near busy roads or highways...

13 years ago, I asked my vet why my cat's coat was so unhealthy. He asked what kind of food was I feeding him. The answer was whatever was cheapest/that I had a coupon for. I did some research, was thoroughly disgusted about what I found out about regular pet food, and changed brands to Nutro. (Not the best, but not the most expensive either.)

His coat got healthier within a short time after I switched his food.

I got off track over the holidays and inevitably gained weight and felt like crap. I'm back on track and feeling much better.

When you put junk into your body there are consequences, which may not be noticeable right away.

Toppingfrmbottom, do you care about how you look? what you wear? how your hair looks and how your skin looks? Too many people look after the outside of their body and not the inside.
I am a firm believer that you are what you eat.
Is it because you don't like cooking that you eat tv dinners?
Its a well known fact that kids like junk food and most parents are aware enough of how bad it is for them and so modify how much of it they eat. As an adult only you can control how much junk you eat and so I hope your journey towards a healthier diet is a successful one. Regardless of expenses, where there's a will there's a way.

Most people wouldn't use cheap, inferior petrol for their cars, I wonder why they think that bodies run effectively on inferior food full with additives...

Once or twice a year I do a cleansing diet just to get rid off the all the stuff that accumulates, it's amazing, after that my taste buds are so much more sensitive and anything ready cooked just tastes far too salty and "wrong".

I can understand why people'd be frusterated if my question involved an easy out or some way to get results but not do anything. But litterally my whole question really was, how many items do individuals,  get at the grocery store, for 200 if you're only buying completely healthy, and how many meals does it streach you for,

I wonder these kind of things when I am awake and have nothing else better going on in my head due to the hour, or that's just the most interesting thought rattling about..  There's a group that's a fix it and freeze it group and they mentioned what do you spend on food a month, and how does fixing it and freezing it once a month cooking style affect the budget, and it sparked my curiosity about grocery budgets, if you only bought fresh , or healthy, or raw or at least innocent till you fucked with it items.

I only mention my grocery shopping haul as kind of a yard stick for how far 200 dollars, does or doesn't streach. I am interested in their grocery bills should they only buy healthy,  but I don't know what other people's costs..
I admit I do have some beginings of inklings on trying now and then to buy nothing but fresh wholesome items, but other thank that inkling that's forming,That's really honestly it, and not some veiled, poorly or other wise, or attempt to get health advise or something for nothing post.

[This is why you frustrate some people TFB, me included. You are admittedly overwieght, have health issues, and your Daddy is pre-diabetic. Yet a crap tv dinner is worth it? Why? because you would rather have an immediate reward of a junk meal full of fat, sugar, salt and artificial ingredients then be healthy? That's your choice, but you really ought to learn to cook and develop a taste for ACTUAL real food before your taste buds are totally numb.

Topping you have been asking these questions for years here, it seems like you just want an easy answer and there isn't one. You have to budget, meal plan, shop, and learn to cook some basics. if not, this is all just a waste of time. Those fast food junk meals are going to kill you and you are way too young to have these health issue and sometimes...you just gotta do the hard work.

Edited to add I spend about $450.00 to $500.00 a month not including cleaning or beauty products but that includes making dinner from scratch 6 nights a week, any wine included and we like wine with dinner, my Man's lunch daily, and it's a very nice and healthy one, and also feeding 5 pets quality and fresh food as well as high quality pet food. I do belong to the local co-op and grow a large vegetable garden in the summer so it is less costly then, also some years we have bought half cows and had them butchered or been lucky enough to get some local venison. I realize not everyone wants to hunt. I also am getting chickens this spring. You have to like I said do the work yourself. Start somewhere.

Of course not. But we're not the soul cooks here, You probably know that I live with my parents, it's something I have referanced a number of times, My mom, and  sometimes my dad is the one cooking most the time, * other times when they're not cooking and it's fend for yourself, or not fast food they brought home, it;s fix it yourself, what ever you scrounge up,*and  yes they cook for all four of us, not just themselves, so what they've fixed is what's offered Daddy and I. Most times the foods are palatable, but on the occasions she cooks something I don't wish to eat, and it's the main course, or the only course, like say the hunk of lamb, lamb flavored  home made gravey and a baked potato,  Or where the entire meal is fish and a tiny scoop of corn,, * I loath fish* and that's it, instead of some nights where there's fish yes, but there's also  3 other things I can stand to eat,, on the plate, I'll eat a convenience item that's quick and easy and doesn't make take more than a few minutes to heat in the micro, over her home cooked meal. And no thankfully my mom doesn't think it's rude or ingratitude to not wanna eat the meal because I don't like what's been cooked. She likes to rib me good naturedly about what a good meal I am missing, and Chris sure don't know what she's missing by being picky about eating and then my dad thinking it's funny gets in on it too and then tells me it's so good and man am I missing out and mmmmmmmm, mnmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmm, well more for him* which is a joke in itself because he hardly eats*.   I know some would be offended or think rude that I didn't eat what was offered, .

If the foods, tasty, and is enough to fill a hungry belly* vs the very small meals of one small  item and one veggie that's it* then of course I prefer home cooked to something microwaved, I just don't have the ambition, interest, or desire to cook up anything like a full meal, it'd likely be scrambled eggs, or hamburger meat I just need to brown. I did like asparagus and when it was cheap in stores I'd buy bunches of it an steam it in a pan, but then of course I did ruin the health aspect by dipping it in mayonaise, I prefer things like that with sauce.

Do you normally buy fresh and healthy food you DON'T like to eat?  You are really reaching here TFTB, but that is your choice.  However, i can tell you this, while you seem worried about what costs are about -- medical bills and pills are more expensive than simply investing in better ways of eating now instead of investing in medications and doctor bills in the near future.

$200 lasts this one person 1 month. 3 meals, 2 snacks per day, all prepared from scratch. I also give away a fair amount of food after my Sunday cooking frenzies :)

I could feed two people on $200 if not for the following:
1. Dairy is organic
2. Meat is Greenwise or equivalent
3. Dirty dozen produce is organic

I feel like I save a lot of money by:
- buying in bulk/on sale/shopping around
- not drinking soda or juice
- not buying processed/convenience food (loves to chop!)
- not drinking alcohol (in addition to the cost of the booze, I eat more when I'm drinking)
- not eating out

I can actually stretch $200 to cover several months.

We have an indoor/outdoor garden so we grow our own vegetables and a lot of our fruits (strawberries, grapes, etc ) All the vegetables are canned to some degree or another.

My daughter is a vegetarian so she does not require meat of any kind.
The only meat I buy is pork, and that's only if I can't find someone to slaughter a pig for us.
The only other food we buy at the store are fruits that we can not grow at home. The bulk of my grocery bill goes toward banana's, apples, oranges, pineapple, kiwi, lemons, limes, peaches, pears...etc.

The major differences:

1. I quit drinking Naked and Odwalla juices.  I replaced them with V-8 and with spritzers, where I replaced juice with 1 part juice, four parts carbonated water.
2. I quit having processed dinners.
3. I cut down on carbs.  Goal is 45-60 grams carbs per meal.
4. I replaced my snacks at work (mostly granola bars) with pickles, carrots, and mixed nuts.

Good point.  Plants will pick up crap from car exhausts.

$200 doesn't stretch far here but keep in mind that I have two teenaged boys in the house and for the last month, a 21 year old girl as well. Plus the other stepkids come by on occasion, and stay for up to a week. This last week I had four young adults plus us, plus my son's best friend over a lot. So feeding five athletic kids requires more food than The Man and I alone.

For us, it's a lot of vegetables. Cauliflower has gotten very expensive. But green cabbage is cheap. I make soup out of all the leftovers with some broth. I buy cheap cuts of meat and throw them in the crock pot with broth, red wine, and a little tomato sauce. Whole turkey breasts which I bone and save the bones until I have enough to make soup.

Learning to cut your own chicken helps save money. As does boning them. With that said, I also buy big packs of boneless, skinless chicken thighs and make chicken parmigiana out of them. Whole wheat pasta or pasta with added fiber, which is pricier than the white and which doesn't come in the store brands. You eat cheaper if you eat unhealthy stuff.

~ Fast Reply ~

You're asking how many items can be purchased and the thing is, a lot of us don't shop that way (or at least I don't).  I buy brown rice in bulk, have a nice supply of spices on hand, buy those bags of frozen chicken breasts that barely was talking about ($6 at Winco), etc.  The other night I sauteed chicken, broccoli and garlic in a skillet with olive oil and Italian herbs and the total cost of that dinner probably came down to $1.25 (not including the glass of wine I had with it lol).  If I go to the store once a week for perishable items so I'm not throwing them out from going bad before I eat them, I can eat very healthy and very economically.  Lentil or Split Pea or Black Bean soup, made in a crock pot, will cost about $3-$5 and can feed me for a few days. Veggie chili would be about the same.  Same with pasta.  As has been said, seasonal vegetables are relatively cheap.

You and I live in the same area, and I see store coupons all the time, for vegetables and meats and canned items like tuna, tomato sauce, etc.  You just have to look through the ads.  Winco is really cheap and you can really stretch your dollar there.

And why are you talking about buying lamb if you're on a budget?

I'm not going to knock you for LIKING TV dinners  - I tend to like really junky food, too, but that's because of the sugar and salt they put in them.  Until you figure out how to spice up your own home cooked foods, home meals can taste dull in comparison.

Anyway, I'd say $200 feeds me for about a month or more.  And I cook almost all my meals from scratch and eat healthy foods.

I've spent a small fortune for groceries in the past couple of years due to the number of teenage boys we had at home.  (They honestly do have hollow legs.  )  Now that Firm and I have an empty nest, there's been a drastic drop in our food bill.

I don't generally buy junk food, however I also do not scrimp or budget shop, either.  The only meat I ever purchase in the grocery store is ground beef, the rest comes from a specialty meat market.  I do try to take care in purchasing only what will be used... I hate throwing food out.   I'm not always successful with fresh produce, however.  I also hate being out of anything so we do have a good amount of food supplies (mostly canned goods and staples, along with freezable items) on hand at all times... an extra refrigerator/freezer, an upright freezer, and 10 feet of floor to (near) ceiling shelves are kept stocked.

That being said, $200 worth of strictly food items would last Firm and I approximately 3 weeks (three meals a day/seven days a week).  But as Aynne said, it does require planning and work.

This reminds me of when I was little and didn't finish my dinner it would be served to me the next morning. Cold. The dog and I quickly developed an understanding.

We kids often heard "Clean Plate Club" (not referring to the help from the dog, lol.

Yes, I have food issues.

It depends on where you shop, here we have a couple of major chains ( Jewel/Dominicks and a couple of others) and we avoid them. It seems that the smaller chains all have better deals on produce.
Because we live close to a jewel and a small chain store ( I never remember the name) We will do what I  call "combo shopping". Buying only certian packaged goods that are on sale at the big chain and our produce at the small store. I also have a membership at Costco and like their meats and fish we buy stuff in bulk that we can re-package and store in small quantity. We try to avoid proccesed foods but of course we do eat some, I think the biggest proccesed foods we eat...spaghetti sauce & frozzen pizza I don't eat canned veggies.

For two of us eating pretty well, I mean steaks, Ahi tuna, and Salmon a couple of times a month. Chicken is something we usually have twice a week and always a fresh veggie and salad. It's about $300 for the month.

The biggest issue we have (Me mostly) is portion controll. If we eat more in the guidlines of what nutritionests say the food goes a little farther, for example a serving of pasta is 2 ounces I can eat half a pound (8 ounces) by myself, but then I feel bloated and stuffed so I try to eat more like 4-6 ounces of pasta.

Of course we do order a pizza once in while, or some take out china food but mostly cook at home.

I think those words are probably the most logical ones I have read so far in this thread.
I'm ashamed to admit that there was a time when I was raising a family of four and never had to think about how much I spent on food shopping. I would bring the new groceries home and practically fill up a bin liner with wasted products from the week before.
I recently saw my sister doing exactly the same and I couldn't help but tot up the items she was about to discard. It came to over £30 and she shops weekly. If she does that every week then she is throwing away around £1500 or $2300 in American money a year. If I was to hold $2300 in front of my sister before setting it alight she would tell me I'm stupid and yet every single week she throws money in the garbage.

I think we're all in the same boat.  It seriously is an adjustment.  I had to re-educate Myself on how much food to cook for meals when My son moved out of the house and joined the Army.  At eighteen, he could eat what MP and I would put together.  The same for those periods when clip is with us.

It drives Me crazy to throw food away.  Even with only cooking what two people will eat in a meal, it does happen from time to time.
