that sure does help a lot. One year my dad had 5 I think tomato plants that all didEXTREMLY well, we had so many tomatos we couldn't begin to give them away, not enough people to give to.

We have an indoor/outdoor garden so we grow our own vegetables and a lot of our fruits (strawberries, grapes, etc ) All the vegetables are canned to some degree or another.

My daughter is a vegetarian so she does not require meat of any kind.
The only meat I buy is pork, and that's only if I can't find someone to slaughter a pig for us.
The only other food we buy at the store are fruits that we can not grow at home. The bulk of my grocery bill goes toward banana's, apples, oranges, pineapple, kiwi, lemons, limes, peaches, pears...etc.

I hate throwing out herbs the most, so I grow them and just use what I need. I grow basil, thyme, parsley, and cilantro.

My body wants different foods depending on whether it's hot or cold, so sometimes I end up throwing out salad fixings or tropical fruit if it abruptly gets cold.

But as to an excess of cooked food, I just bring it to work. My coworkers love my cooking! If I just have a few servings, I start by feeding the person who writes my performance review, heeheehee.

My mother has a compost pile - all her throw-aways go back into her garden.

Sharhar, I'd plan things around sales lol. 1 place near me had 6 sweet white corns for a dollar, and a huge ass pack of chicken leggs and a couple other great deals, so seeing the great sale, I decided we'd have chicken an corn on the cob that week lol.

Daddy teases me about my habit lately of deciding what to get come grocery day by what's a good sale.

We are planning our menus out a little at a time.

We get steaks/red meat when they are on sale or discounted.

I like fish so we get a bag of it frozen.  I try numerous brands and so far, the beer platter by Gordon's is on my list.

We have almost cut out sodas.  Mom gets a 2-liter and we drink one glass a day.  Rest of the time, I drink water and Mom have some Crystal Lite in various flavors.

We get french fries, waffle chips and tater tots.  I have the urge to eat potatoes, so I put some in the oven and I can munch on them.  No grease and no salt.

Tomorrow, we are headed to town to see a sleep doctor, returning some clothing (with tags), get some yarn and stuffing.  I am making a Cthulhu monster after I finish H's penguin.  I also need to call in my meds since some of them has to be ordered.

Kalikshma I accidently told daddy the wrong item or there was some kind of misunderstanding, and he brought home a whole fresh thing of herbs I had no use for or any idea what to do with.

when he was young my dads mom used to try to guilt him into eating all his food on his plate by telling him there were some kids who didn't have food to be picky over, an he'd always say take my plate , they can have it, naturally, not the reply mom was looking for lol.

We kids often heard "Clean Plate Club" (not referring to the help from the dog, lol.

Yes, I have food issues.

FR:

My neighbor and I are re-learning all this.  We have teamed up and do dinner nearly every day.

So- I book marked the 3 local grocers.  I read the flyers- and plan out - what is a good buy.

We are making it up as we go along.  But Top- there is 2 of you- you have an edge- as with one is is harder to meal plan.

BTW_ by teaming up- both of us are saving money and eating better.  Win-win- all the way.

I've spent a small fortune for groceries in the past couple of years due to the number of teenage boys we had at home.  (They honestly do have hollow legs.  )  Now that Firm and I have an empty nest, there's been a drastic drop in our food bill.

I don't generally buy junk food, however I also do not scrimp or budget shop, either.  The only meat I ever purchase in the grocery store is ground beef, the rest comes from a specialty meat market.  I do try to take care in purchasing only what will be used... I hate throwing food out.   I'm not always successful with fresh produce, however.  I also hate being out of anything so we do have a good amount of food supplies (mostly canned goods and staples, along with freezable items) on hand at all times... an extra refrigerator/freezer, an upright freezer, and 10 feet of floor to (near) ceiling shelves are kept stocked.

That being said, $200 worth of strictly food items would last Firm and I approximately 3 weeks (three meals a day/seven days a week).  But as Aynne said, it does require planning and work.

I also am getting chickens this spring.

Oooohhh... Chickens can be a blast to own!

Really? Have you had them? I have never and I am so excited!! They are only for their eggs, not meat, and just to add to the collection of critters around here. . If you have any tips, love to hear them! Like a good number to start out with, and any particular breed you liked. Of course being in Maine I need a hardy stock. Knowing me, they will probably be inside until I get told to get them outside!

My granny always used to have 4 chicken, with that amount it was rare that we were short of eggs for her and for us (6 people) despite that a lot of baking was going on in both of our families. She always kept them for about 2 years, after that time they stopped to lay good eggs anymore and had to be slaughtered... whilst my brother was introduced into that, I am glad I didn't

As far as I know Holly knows a lot about chicken

You like critters ? Maybe I should stop over :-)

When I lived on the farm, or visited, the chicken as well as the eggs were different. The eggs tasted different, which was especially noticable on french toast. They didn't slaughter alot of chickens, but when they did it was also different, I can't quite describe it. The milk was vastly different especially of being non-homogenized. It was also not pasteurized, for better or worse.

We are not getting what we used to get in the stores to say the least. People from other countries (I know a few) comment about the food, they don't like it. In other places they have alot of smaller places, rather than our megamarts and such. They say for the most part the food tastes better there.

Flavor - what exactly is it ? (hmmmmm, that my be threadworthy)

One medium-large critter for slaughter, $75 to $150.  Could be a hog, a goat or a sheep.  Several $10 to $20 crates of vegetables at the farmer's market.  A dozen cull roosters ($0 to $2-3 each).  Trade some meat for eggs and milk to the folks who produce it, or buy it from the backyard producers.  $20 for odds and ends here and there (low carb flours to bake with, herbs and spices for flavoring, salt and pepper, etc).  I'm eating for a very long time for my $200.

That is true, you could taste the difference between the eggs from grannies hens and the ones from the store

As a kid I loved checking the stall if they had laid an egg or not and to shut their door when it got dark to protect them from foxes and those other critters (don't remember their english name now....damn age...) anyhow....in that respect you have to protect them from more wildlife on your side of the pond as far as I know...though might depend as well in what area you are living, however, compared to your wildlife we have not much to worry about in regards to Hens, in Germany.

Phoenixpower We didn't have wild ,wildlife, like foxes or the like,  that liked to terrorize our chickens it was them freaking neighborhood cats that were outdoor cats and nobody knew who it belonged to and it just came over and terrorized the chickens when ever it felt like a meal. It got in an killed one of my dad's favoritest chickens, and he was heart broke. And  so you do need a completely closed in coop for them sometimes.

The youngest son of my boss wanted chicken and they had 3 of them, pets who gave eggs, there are a couple of things you might need to know as they easily can get parasites. Then a couple of kids stole the chicken, let them go a bit further down the road as a "joke" and it seems like the fox got them.... Not that I liked them very much, they tried to peck my toes in the summer and birds scare me a bit, but yeah, an enclosed chicken run and a house would be a good idea...

now that it's just me in my house since my daughter moved out I spend no more than $100 a month on food buying fresh veggies and fruit, pasta, beans, rice, fish and a few pieces of meat from time to time since I don't really eat that much meat.

We have a grocery store here called Bottom Dollar that is extremely cheap because you bag your own groceries and provide your own bags or boxes. I'm able to buy my microwave Weight Watchers meals to take to work with me at 5 for $5 which are the only frozen types of meals I buy. They're easy for work in the winter when I don't want to go outside at lunch. Otherwise I usually take leftovers with me from the night before and I freeze a lot of leftovers as well to make things stretch.

Out of curiosity, since your primary is with you all of the time and your secondary with you for part of the time, do you have the butcher cut your meat for both two and three portion sized packages?  Since we have a freezer, we purchase meat we stock up on it and I never get it right how many meals should be for three, rather than for two for the duration.  Do you have a set number of nights that you expect all three of you to be having dinner together and go from that?

The one from granny was fully closed but they still sometimes managed to get near them, which is why they slept in a cage which was from all sides protected with a cement wall and via a string their thick wood door was pulled up in the morning and let down when the sun was about to say good night...

At home I actually next to never saw a fox, have seen them much more frequently over here in the UK, however, they are around at night time and also the....ferrets (that was the word I was looking for earlier), so if my granny wouldn't have closed it at night time (or if we wouldn't have done it when she was going away for a few days) then their chickens would have been at risk and as far as I know it did happen either before my time or when I was very young....

I only said the wildlife you have over there as I know a guy in Seattle (I think he is from) who doesn't let his cats out due to cougars and know that in Stevens forest (colorado) is even more wild life out and about, thats why I said, depending where Aynne is living as we simply don't have such a variety in Germany (where we live very close to the forest).

It saddens me at times to know that this is now past with my grandparents and their chicken. *sigh*

For 200, we can usually feed the three of us for a month and a half, 2 months.  But it could go longer if we happened to have gone to the slaughter house for various meats.  If we go to the slaughter house, the 200 at the grocery store goes maybe 4-6 months.  So, it all depends.

If we do get the quick and easy precooked stuff (which is rare) that lasts even longer since we (Step Mother and I) prefer to cook just about EVERYTHING from scratch.
