MLK Day as a make-up day for school.... - 1/14/2011 5:48:56 AM

Some school districts have decided to have school on Monday, in order to try to begin making up what has been a brutal loss of school time due to snow and ice here in the south.  Civil rights leaders are in an uproar about this.

We have made up days on Washington and Lincoln's birthdays, and on Presidents Day since those two were combined.  Veterans Day is no longer a holiday in most school districts.  Columbus Day has been a holiday placed on the calendar and used just for the chance to make up weather days, if needed.

So, is MLK Day more sacred than any other Federal holiday? Why or why not?

My opinion is that we know we are having good weather Monday, and we know this has already been a rough ass winter for us, so while it is not ideal to go Monday, desperate times call for desperate measures.  Many districts are already 9 or more days behind, and they are predicting more ice to come before this winter is over.

Rats!   Did you have to remind me?  I am expected something important in the mail and it pisses me off that I will have to wait.

What a bunch of BS.

Same here except they cancelled Good Friday as a day off as well. Folks around here aren't yelling too much. Yesterday, The head of the local NAACP basically said that he was glad for the lead time so he can reschedule the planned events at the rec center.
Seems someone is more concerned that kids get an education than they learn to be militant. What a concept huh?

I don't get the uproar, MLK was about education of people, and well the kids being in school would fit right into that.  I am sure MLK would rather have the kids in school than out of school because people don't think kids should be learning on that date.

However, we always made days up at the end of the year.

A brutal loss of school time?

Maybe we have to accept that the amount of time spent in school does not equate to the quality of education.

Much of it is just day care.

Did you have something to say regarding the topic of the thread, or did you just do a drive-by to put down those who are doing the best they can to educate our children?

I'm pretty damn sure I was exactly on topic.

Unless the topic was to piss and moan about MLK day.

Nope. Now, if it was Malcolm X's birthday... then I could understand all the wiling and gnashing of teeth.

When I was in an Army school we had a snow day.   Closed the base.   We begged for a make up day on a Saturday.

I think education is to important to miss days.   It isn't that they will learn all that much in one day, but it sets the standard for life - I am sure most if not all of us have had to work on a holiday - and hopefully they will absorb something out of it.    I do feel sorry tho for those that had plans that had to be rearranged.

Seems a lot of crying for nothing. If you feel the need to fill out the School year..add the days to the end of the year. It is a holiday held in high regard by a large section of the populace.

Or, the annual spring break could be cancelled and all the other holidays be kept in....but ,oh no, we have to have our spring break!

A couple years ago MLK's son spoke at Central Michigan University, and he disagreed with MLK Day being a holiday. He said his father would also have disagreed.

So the question is, is a day of rest the appropriate tribute for a distinguished person?

~FR~ Or one could just learn to deal with ice and snow and not close the schools...just a suggestion, though I know you Americans hate to learn from Canadian experience

I am in the south Arpig.  The last time we had ice this bad, I was in elementary school, which was mumble mumble a couple of years ago.  Since we need the equipment once every 30 or 40 years, it wouldn't be prudent to spend the money......

I think rescheduling to hold school on the MLK holiday was probably the right move.  I don't have issues with changing the calendar to have classes on days that do not hold a religious significance for anyone.  If they are going to schedule for Good Friday as well, they may have some issues with those that will need to be excused for any services that they may be attending or those who had already planned trips to be with family for the Easter weekend.

Arpig, many of the places that got significant enough snow and ice to shut down were in locations that some folks have never had to drive in any version of white conditions.  It's not like you can turn them all loose on the roads so they can get a crash course.

LP, driving in snow is not that bad. They had like, what, 4 inches? Slow down about 5 mph, you'll be fine.

...bunch of wimps
