ORIGINAL: pahunkboy I see ALOT of people sick... bugs of some kind. So far I have escaped that... how are you coping with this cold season? Is there alot of "under the weather" in your area? Do's and don'ts you recommend. ? Thanks all! I get sick only once every two years on average. Nope, I don't get flu shots either. I avoid crowds, and keep masks in my car if I am going to be around people who are ill. Someone really teed me off a few weeks ago by coughing in my face at Walmart...I felt the rush of air on my face and held my breath for a while afterward. If someone is coughing in an elevator, I don't get in unless I am wearing a germ mask. I rarely wear a germ mask, but I'm not afraid to be seen in public wearing one. I started doing this during years that I had to have chemo. I was already weak and didn't want bronchitis or the flu on top of everything. Other than that, during normal times when I don't see anyone hacking up nasty stuff around me...I use hand sanitizer and have trained myself not to touch my face with my hands. If my face tickles, I rub it with my forearm. After leaving a store, I have hand sanitizer in my car, and use it...even if I am going to another store next. People used to wash their hands before eating. Most people don't nowadays. I might wash my hands in a public bathroom even if I have not "used the restroom" if there is dust or dirt on my hands, but right after sitting down at a table, after ordering, I use hand sanitizer. Face it, after having washed hands in a bathroom, one touches the faucets to turn the water off, turns a crank to get paper towels, touches a door handle to open it, and then touches the menu to read. I used to clean bathrooms...we never cleaned the sink handles unless they were visibly soiled. Same for the door handles. Menus were never disinfected. Tables were wiped off with wet rags, not with bleach water and...usually not with any soap either. Trays at McDs and other places were wiped with a damp towel...imagine thousands of people using them and only a damp towel going over them IF they looked soiled, lol. (We watched a woman use a rag to clean inside bathroom stalls, then came out with the same rag...without even rinsing it in hot water...to wipe around the bathroom sinks...then...went out to wipe the tables in a McDonalds.) I use that disinfectant towelette in supermarkets to clean the grocery cart handle when those area available. One time I wasn't thinking, I was in my favorite Chinese food buffet and had disinfected my hands then gone to the tables to serve myself some food. I had waited five minutes until someone else had served themselves and sat down...they had bronchitis and had covered their mouth when coughing and had touched many of the serving utensils. I touched these serving spoons and did not think to disinfect my hands again...and caught that nasty bronchitis by the time I woke up the next day. Now I use hand sanitizer after serving my food at buffets. No, I am not OCD but I am stubborn. If I am sick and have to go out in public or even around my mother, I wear a germ mask to keep my germs to myself, and yes, I use the hand sanitizer just as copiously. If I've washed my hands at a place with automatic faucets, I use my elbow to open the door and skip using hand sanitizer. My son and my mother now do the same. I read that most cold germs are caught from our own hands and took action. It works for us.
