Right, so I had this friendly argument with a friend who was delighted that he found his copy of Titanic again, my reaction was "Yikes, bad bad chick flick, great fashion but otherwise horrible, Leonardo is not the bad boy, he's the bad baby and why does it take him hours to drown in near freezing water, how about hypothermia? Can you sink your DVD?"

Said friend is straight and maintains Titanic is not a chick flick but a classic jst like Casablanca (ha, I violently disagree), personally I HATED it and would like to sink Celine Dion with the Titanic, it was an overproduced, thin love story, who would leave Zane for DiCrappio (unless you are a cradle snatcher liking little boys, bad boy syndrome means bad boy syndrome not bad baby syndrome) etc.... The background, the costumes all fine, but essentially a tear jerking chick flick in my eyes.

I challenged him to find as many straight guys liking the movie as chicks, he said it wouldn't matter so I suggested taking up a poll...

Well, I did like it, but any movie that makes you cry is a chick flick....regardless of what led up to the tears.

I would thank that the uber macho mentality that men are pressured to, or stupidly, buy into would leave most men feeling that it is a chick flick. However I am a goofy kinda troll who is very confident in my identity and sexuality. I love to see a romantic story that makes me see and feel that the characters are powerful in love, cuz I like the powerful love feeling. Being involved with someone who gets me and likes all my little monsters makes that powerful feeling come really easy. I have a very clear knowledge of my wants and needs. For the most part when my needs are being met, my wants are being catered to because they are so closely connected. The euphoria for me isn't the typical kink thing, or what so many people come here would present as their euphoric bliss. I give little illusions as to who I am and what I am looking for. I am not a sadist, however I do have a sadistic approach to discipline/correction. I am completely 24/7 TPE that likes kinky shit when the mood strikes me. Got a nice lil pic on my profile that will attest to mood striking fun. I love to sail, almost need to sail and that lil quirk made me handy with rope and by accident the necessity of being handy with rope lent itself to a kinky want fulfilled. Nevertheless what is most profound for me is the girl accepting, hungrily and eagerly, the love I have to offer in the way and lifestyle I offer it.

I couldn't say I was unique in this, but I would venture rare. Sex an kink are yummy lil devices and add a great deal of flavor to my ice cream, but what is most important of all for me is having an all consuming love for the girl(s) and being able to express that with a touch, a look, a kiss or any means that may strike me. That said, a lot of people may view Titanic as a chick flick, but for me it is a dramatic representation of what is really important to me.

YMMV
SLURP!

Of course it's a chick flick: it has Leonardo DiCaprio in it, and he was cast purely to appeal to chicks during the first flush of his career because he was a very pretty boy until the boozing began to assert itself on his phiz.

Leonardo drowning in cold water but unfortunately not shutting up (HYPOTHERMIA FFS), and if she would hace moved her butt, he also would have fitted on that bloody big door.... They could have lived in blissful poverty forever and called it freedom...

Brian's Song isn't a chick flick.

ETA:

Titanic was definitlely a romance. It was also a little bit of a historical movie, explaining the decisions leading to going full speed into iceberg filled seas, and how the Titanic actually physically sank.

It's probably more chick flick than not, I guess.

I'm a biological female, same age as Leonardo (I think, might be give or take a year but then he is counting in Hollywood years so I could be a few years younger) and to be honest he never appealed, repelled possibly but he just seems to be so freaking WET!

The movie was pretty crap but the set and the costumes were nice, unfortunately not nice enough to endure the whole movie without complaining and wishing DiCrapio would freakinf do his thing and DROWN, you just don't take hours in cold water giving speeches before you die, you sink...

The Searchers made me sniffle a bit the first time I watched it. I guarantee that one isn't a chick flick...

Guppy faced, as well: he looks like the offspring of Gary Numan and a really big fish...

I do agree that it is a chick flick.  At the same time, there are some elements that would appeal to males.  If nothing else, most guys will appreciate the cool gadgets that the 'current day' folks who were exploring the wreckage were getting to use.  (What guy wouldn't want something that dives underwater where you can control it and use your own hands to manipulate it.)  Also, if your guy happens to be a history buff, there can be some appeal.  Cameron did include a lot in the film that was historically correct based on recounts from the few who survived the ordeal.

As for the two leading men..........  I don't care how long ago it was.  The first man to slap Me from across a breakfast table in a non consensual way wouldn't appeal to Me a damn bit.

Some Mad Max movies made me sniffle, does that mean they are chick flicks? Well, maybe the last one but the first one was pretty good, though I wasn't allowed to see it in cinemas... Snake Bliskin (sp) made me sniffle, guess that must be a chick flick then...

I think it's Plisskin.
And to be fair, Escape From LA made a lot of John Capenter's fans cry, though not half as many as Ghosts of Mars did...
(My comment should have been aimed at soul2share though, not hlen, who was correctly refuting the "blubbing=chick flick" argument...)

As far as I know not a history buff... Now I wouldn't let anybody slap me but those guys played roles, and when it comes to attraction a male will always win over a baby, in a remotely real world she would have answered with a straight right hook

I preferred Leo in Romeo and Juliet. THAT was badass.
Titanic - I am a bigger James Cameron fan than I am a Leo fan (although I tolerate him a lot better now that he's all grown up and stuff), but I carefully avoided this movie for several years because hey - the boat's gonna sink and lots of people are going to die, dramatically. No surprises.
Then someone made me sit down and watch it one night, and I actually kinda liked it. Not because of the two stars, but because of pretty much everyone else. The only real tear-jerker scenes for me were the Irish mother telling her two children laying in bed about Tir Na Nog (heaven), and the old man who laid down in the bed with his arms around his wife, waiting to die with her.
That old gal that played Miss Rose as an old lady, she just passed away recently..

True but without being cynical, that is sort of expected in such a movie
