As A US Citizen i have the right
  • to fall sick & be denied health care (inspite of having insurance, just cos a insurance guy believed the procedure was too expensive.
  •  to be shot by a dumbass (mentally sick) guy who managed to get an assault weapon with no checks
  • to live in a smog filled air (because the energy company was to lazy to change to something cleaner)
  • to not know what is in my food (store bought)
  • to be duped by finance (& other) companies & then tun around & bail them out.
Tell me which other country citizen have all these rights...

The right to participate in Medicare, the right to work in Australia, the right to travel to and from Australia at will, the right to obtain an Australian driver's licence...and when I become an Australian citizen I'll have even more :D

So I guess convicted drunk drivers wont need a drivers license to get drunk and behind the wheel.I remember hearing about this bill. This is the direction the Tea Party is headed.I guess maybe we can continue to let the Tea Party ideas out of the bag,so rational people can truly see just how stupid they are.

DUI's are unconstitutional. You have the right to travel. The constitution does not hinge this right on sobriety.

I love this game so much.

I'm starting to love the Tea-Party (the neo-anarchist)...
No driver's license...
No restrictions on Pot...
No State interference in a Woman's (or Man's) health (& reproductive) choices...

I guess the next thing will be open Gay marriage (the constitution doesn't say anything against two Men/Women getting married)...
I'm sure i'm missing a few more...

I wouldn't mind doing away with restrictions on pot.I dont think that should mean that people can get high and then drive.

As for my right to travel, that is true.I have a right to travel. That does not mean I have the right to do anything as I wish and get behind the wheel, with no regards for public safety. If I want to get around without a car,I still have my rights.Theres the bus, taxi cabs and etc.Theres no way that even Georgia will do away with drivers license.Makes a good campaign speech when talking to the Tea Party though.Maybe we can let dogs drive behind the wheel too. After all, they don't need a license either.Where does this insanity end?

Nonsense. The Federal government has the explicit right to impose excise taxes on liquor. They are just imposing a tax (fine) or your transportation of liquor in your belly or blood stream on public highways. The fine scales by the amount of alcohol you are transporting at the time (DUI vs. DWI).

Are you sure? Where is this right enumerated? You have certain rights, like free speech or freedom of press. Nowhere does it say you can move about while exercising them.

GA Republican’s bill would do away with driver’s licenses

This is an ego bill, it'll never pass.
Sure, everyone has the right to travel but not neccessarily in a vehicle with a combustable fuel engine.
Get on a horse or walk and,...no lisense required.
What he misses is that driving is a privilidge not a right that's why if you fuck up and get too many tickets for speeding or get caught drinking and driving the state can take away your lisence.
He should instead be looking to do away with "permits" to carry a firearm which is a right.

I think that this bill is intended to show a point, nothing more.

However, for all those that talk about keeping drunk drivers and such off the road with a lack of a driver's license, are you kidding me?

Do you really think that NOT having a license is what keeps them from driving? My car does not have a slot that requires you to insert a valid license before starting. How many drive without insurance? Again, there is nothing that keeps a car from starting because you do not have it.

In the US, there is not a single set of standards for getting a license. They are not even all called the same thing. Who would think that a Class D, Class 10, and Class R license were all the same? But they are equivalent.

My point is that a lack of license does not prevent an intoxicated person from driving. Nor does it prevent a 12 year old from going joy-riding.

Not having one really does not prevent much of anything, other than it has become a de facto form of national identification. And even that is changing with the new "enhanced drivers license." I really wish Kansas would get those.

Nissan is now testing various systems that don't even require a Breathalyzer to detect drinking. One system uses a tiny camera to observe facial expressions, another system being tested checks blood alcohol levels though sensors when the driver grasps the shift control and a third system uses the car's internal computer to calculate if a motorist is steering erratically. Ford already has a system that allows parents to limit the speed of a vehicle driven by a youthful motorist, and Mercedes-Benz's new E-Class comes with a system that issues an audible warning if the driver gets drowsy.

Welcome to technology. Btw, heard recently that these breathalyzers may become standard. Wouldnt that be lovely!

This just scares me.

Just because we CAN do something, does not mean that we should.

I already fear newer vehicles because of the air-bags. At my height they are NOT a safety feature, they are a serious injury / death feature. I have a toddler. . . I can just see my car refusing to start because of my facial expression or being erratic. *sigh*

Actually, the part I like.. and the part I would much rather see... is the car's ability to determine alcohol levels. And I still believe breathalyzers should be mandatory in all cars. Bean counters wont like it much, but, I bet the cops would appreciate it.. as well as the ERs. EMTs, ect ect.

ETA

I knew I would find it. The benefits of having them installed.

quote:

Bergman, who sells interlock devices in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island, says the devices have become sophisticated enough to stymie even a "technical wizard" who is trying to defeat it. Some features include:

Taking a picture of every test to catch drivers who persuade other people to blow into their devices for them.

Forcing the driver to hum into the breathing tube so the device knows it's measuring a human being and not, say, a leaf blower.

Requiring random tests to prevent drivers from drinking after they start driving or letting their cars idle while they sit inside bars. Washington's Department of Licensing calls these "rolling retests."

Hard-wiring to the horn and headlights, both of which are activated in a heart-stopping frenzy if you try to bypass the system.

The devices are calibrated to detect even low levels of alcohol -- mouthwash can cause a failed test -- because convicted drunken drivers are prohibited from driving with any alcohol in their systems. You're not advised to take a test with a severe hangover either – lingering alcohol will cause you to fail the test.

Interlock companies send the data collected by the devices to designated authorities, such as district attorneys or probation officers. In some states, multiple failures can cause you to lose your license again or force you to keep a device installed longer.

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Insurance/InsureYourCar/a-breathalyzer-in-every-car.aspx?ucpg=5

And before someone starts on the unconstitutionality of such devices, these drivers gave up those rights when committing the crime.

Not the point really. Define license.

If it illegal to do something without permission it is a crime.

Just sayin.

quote:

I'm sure the illegal immigrants would like a 'no driver's license' law in effect for most red states.

No offense, but they seem to have one, at least in California. A friend and former co-worker of mine, who happened to live right up the street, was hit twice in three months by cars barreling out of the apartment complexes that line the street. The first time, the damage was all to his car (smashed the rear fender, bumper, etc); the second time was worse, it finished the car off and left my friend bruised and sore as hell for a couple of weeks (he was lucky).

In both cases the police who responded told him that the other driver was 'almost certainly' illegal, and didn't have a license or insurance. He was also told that there was nothing they could really do about it, and his options were to: attempt to sue for damages, fix the car himself, or submit a claim to his insurance company. They advised option 2, as option 1 would likely cause the other driver to disappear once served, and option 3 would raise my friend's insurance rates (the car was an old VW bug runabout, and not worth what it would cost in insurance hikes).

In both cases, the driver who caused the accident, and had no license or insurance, went on his merry way with a 'Notice to Appear' in his pocket. In neither case did the driver show for his court date.

While I think that this douchecanoe Rep's proposal is idiotic *has a vision of a 10 year old citizen driving on I-405 in rush hour*, the above makes me wonder just a bit about the value of licensing drivers while this sort of thing goes on, and it goes on way too often where I live. Ask folks around here why they carry 'uninsured driver' coverage, and they look at you like you have 2 heads.
