Have you kicked HRCs asses yet? the sleeves on that sweatshirt are falling to pieces....

WTF?   [sm=dunno.gif]

Am I supposed to understand this? If so then (assuming you're not a complete numptie - not necessarily a safe assumption [sm=bite.gif] ) I'm afraid it's me who's getting too old.

Whatever you think of the quality and content, I think it's great that videos like this can give greater exposure - and implicit acceptance - to our happy kinks.

Note my point was quite firmly not "isn't this a great video from a talented singer" (this is not a music appreciation thread). Duh.

My point is I think that if Rihanna, Madonna, Christine Aguilera etc - people with large followings of fans - produce music vids which include any elements of bdsm, no matter how tacky, a very much wider audience of vanilla ppl are going to see them and - at least to some extent - begin to think kink is not wrong.

If more people can feel that sub/dom is just a different take on life, not some shameful perversion, then I think that's good.

FullCircle -> RE: Rihanna - S&M (2/5/2011 3:56:45 AM)

I don't think there is a shortage of shame in the modern world. This idea that it's all about teaching people about other ways of life is a bit outdated. People don't always point out differences and persecute others because they don't understand such differences. Often they do so because they want to feel morally superior. No amount of education by the likes of Rihanna, who is probably perpetuating old stereotypes in such videos, is going to change that. All it matters to them is the $ associated with courting controversy, there is no social awareness programme going on here.

FR:
I can't stand anything about Rihanna..she has..one..maybe two good songs but as an artist? I think she's overrated. This music video is the worst music video I have ever seen in my life. It's sexy fail, and the song...don't get me started. Ugh I needed first aid after watching it.[X(]

Does it...or does it give the trappings of fetish wear and bdsm images exposure? It's easy enough to throw on a latex dress and take your guy for a walk on a leash, but is that just a kinky image put out to sell a song? Controversy sells. Just ask Madonna.

Best comment on the whole thread.

It's not even controversy.  The bottom line is sex sells and any facet of what is believed to be "more interesting" sex sells better.  It's not "promoting the lifestyle".  It's selling CD's and concert tickets.

Yep what these two say. I mean come on the whole song consists of 5 sentences repeated obnoxiously. It does nothing for the "lifestyle" (for lack of a better word) but showcase the racy side of s&m.

No doubt her intent is not to promote the lifestyle. She's just borrowing some imagery to make a little splash. That said, any positive or neutral image of BDSM in mainstream culture will tend to counter the marginalization we've undergone the past few centuries. It isn't going to bring about any grand conversions, but it might help stem the prejudice a bit.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Rihanna - S&M (2/6/2011 8:03:06 AM)

What i see happening is that as the larger population is exposed to images of bdsm in sort-of-positive way, they won't be quite as shocked when their loved ones are outed. At least the whole concept won't be so new and horrible.

TotalDiscipline -> RE: Rihanna - S&M (2/6/2011 9:10:59 AM)

I am curious why there seem to be so many musicians that use SM.
Guess it is easy to use to get in the spotlights.

metal uses satan
pop/r&b uses S&M

I use M&M's

I don't think interesting sex sells better than typical sex. If this were the case, the average sex shop would have more than a tiny corner of the store dedicated to BDSM and Playboy would have more than one half of one page in the entire magazine dedicated to kink. Vanilla sex actually seems to sell better.

subtlebutterfly -> RE: Rihanna - S&M (2/7/2011 3:52:20 AM)

I am still having nightmares of Rihanna wearing that pink latex dress and white boots.....with the pink popcorn OH MY GAWD it makes me suicidal

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Rihanna - S&M (2/7/2011 4:00:06 AM)

a lot of creative people i know are pretty kinky. =p so maybe there's some connection? who knows

but anyway, i like the video; i think it's fun and she looks amazing in it.
i don't think it's really promoting any positive new idea of the lifestyle, or any non-stereotypical idea of kink. but i don't mind it really.

Charles6682 -> RE: Rihanna - S&M (2/7/2011 4:01:11 AM)

Granted,maybe the video wasn't the best.Still,Rihanna looked great in that video.I am with LilBoPeep on this one.

subtlebutterfly -> RE: Rihanna - S&M (2/7/2011 4:05:56 AM)

looked...great?...BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!!

LoveSlider -> RE: Rihanna - S&M (2/7/2011 4:21:49 AM)

I thought it was great, gagged reporters, there's a lesson to be learned there that the whole world could benefit from :-P

Shame the song offended my ears.

IronBear -> RE: Rihanna - S&M (2/7/2011 5:02:54 AM)

I've seen better and perhaps better images regarding BDSM or kink in a couple in CSIs.

Me either. She looked sexy, it wasn't meant to be some deep in depth thought provoking dissertation on BDSM. It's a club song. Lighten up. No one is looking to Rihanna for a definitive explanation of BDSM via a pop music video. If so, find better sources.

I am not defending her because I am a fan either, my favorite band is AC/DC for god sake. I also think one of the best BDSM songs is Joan Jett's "Fetish."

This is rocking.    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaWKBD1OYPY

Not a music video per se, may raise a smile though...
