Whatever his other merits or demerits may be, Carter is remembered fondly by me for being the person who brought human rights to the forefront of foreign policy. There is a long way to go before all States insist a good human rights record is a pre-requisite to good relations, but at least Carter put the issue on the negotiating table and made sure it stayed there. That was, IMHO, a considerable achievement and one that deserves the highest praise. It also reflects very well on the US and its image internationally even if the US has difficulty always meeting its own human rights standards (water-boarding, Gitmo etc)

Here is perhaps an early indication of how moderate the new Egypt isnt quote: Egypt OKs Iran warships through Suez Canal ...It would be the first time since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution that Iranian warships pass through the Suez Canal, which links the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.

Yeah, much ado about nothing, really. As per international agreement it can be used in time of war or peace, by every vessel of commerce or war, without distinction of flag. So, Egypt is finally living up to the international agreement that it made. It has recently allowed one israeli and eleven us warships to pass thru the canal, the dozen warships wanting to parade in front of Iran. The closure of that canal to certain countries was part of the 30 year 'emergency' measures.

No more than someone like you is an example of the ruling class here, I should think I believe that at this very moment the military (which stepped in to save her) is still in control and the 'ruling class' of egypt, and it appears that they will be the 'ruling class' this evening and even on saturday, allah willing and the creeks don't rise.
