More people die on a Friday then any other day.  So his timing is good.

Aneirin -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/11/2011 10:33:48 AM)

Yes, I had heard he was to step down, and it seems Obama has been calling for a peaceful transition. But despite Mubarack no longer in power, Egypt is at the start of it's long journey, let's hope it is a relatively peaceful one.All eyes on Egypt.

Not to rain on their parade but they have a long road ahead before they can call themselves free.

yes indeed

DarkSteven -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/11/2011 10:41:00 AM)

It's a very powerful step in the right direction. I'm hoping it ends well.

Musicmystery -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/11/2011 11:02:21 AM)

I'm hoping it's not a hand-off to a military coup.

That's my concern as well, but we shall see ...

But mirable dictu, MM and RF, it is what it is and has to be.  He's ruled the country with a mighty (in terms of egypt, in terms of world, not so much) military bent.

They are the guys who are left in the government to take over, there ain't gonna be any welder out of the shipyards to lead the country at this juncture.

You are going to transition to a 'panamanian strong man manuel noriega' scenario for the foreseable future.  Or who you got in mind out of there until september elections (if they will be held now)?

Cuz they are going to have a continuous government and a head to that government starting today.

Actually, given the plethora of very highly educated academics in Egypt, as well as those in exile, I would have said if any nation on earth has a "leader in waiting" available now, today, it's Egypt.

What will most likely happen is that anyone the military permit to take power, as and when, will have done a deal with said military not to clip their wings and, at the first sign of said person actually wanting to rule, rather than do as the military say, then they'll find themselves back to El Presidente types and no-one in power without a chest-full of those really daft, Amin-type, "whole of left side of jacket" medals.

But I'm notoriously cynical, so maybe it'll be fine :) This is one time I'd love to be wrong.

Its a hand off to the military at least temporarily, but not a coup.

This is a very good day [:D]

kdsub -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/11/2011 11:49:25 AM)

I like many here do not know the true dynamic of Egyptian politics. I wonder and worry about the rest of the country outside of Cairo. Some have insinuated that their thinking may be quite different than the urban areas.

As an example… imagine if New York and Washington DC had protested in the streets for the removal of George Bush. Would this demonstration have reflected the majority? I think not. The same in Iran…I believe the people of the large cities are all for the removal of strict secular rule but the rural areas are not and we saw the result of this division.

I do hope this is not the case in Egypt.

Butch

More that a military coup, you should worry that a new "Islamic fundamentalist" regime does not arise.  That would be a tragic happening.

mnottertail -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/11/2011 12:27:03 PM)

They just don't have the impetus for it there.  I am fairly certain that is not a significant worry.

mnottertail -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/11/2011 12:47:04 PM)

well ash, these are interesting questions and you are from the area, what is the government likely to be formed like?  Strong military general no election come september?  A scholarly type from either egypt or a egyptian abroad?  Now or september?

Islamic fundamentalist state governed by clerics?

What scenario do you find most likely, and if you know who. Who?
