The operative word there is "claiming" Popeye seems to think that being too lazy to register as a Republican(right wing nut jub branch ) qualifies him to claim independancy.
Of course his every post gives lie to his claims.

Sanity -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/11/2011 4:31:47 PM)

You have to give Bush credit if you really think this is about freedom and democracy. All the Dem Libs claimed that middle eastern people are too primitive to appreciate such things while Bush insisted that they deserved to be free and yearned to be free, he even staked his presidency on it.

I'm hoping it's not a hand-off to a military coup.

agreed

Governments, america included do not opperate on freedom, they operate on the illusion of freedom.

Awww, cmon, just because someone good with video could put audio of Obama's recent speeches on Egypt and the ME over a video of Bush and no one could tell the difference is no reason to credit him.

Aynne88 -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/11/2011 5:22:50 PM)

Salut Ashjor~ This is an amazing time for the people of Egypt, and many many Americans stand with you. Let's toast to that [:D]. And of course the most peaceful transition possible.

So, it's 8:22 on Friday night here, I say we have that drink!

DarkSteven -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/11/2011 5:23:13 PM)

Hey, ashjor, I apologize for the responses you are getting.  You must feel like someone with a sister that all the guys are commenting upon - like your own feelings are getting short shrift.

We US folks tend to be US-centric in our world views.  I am elated for you, and I'm hoping for a government that truly does represent the people and gives a damn about them.

And is also responsive to the West.

Aynne88 -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/11/2011 5:24:23 PM)

Hugs Steven and Ashjor [;)]. Well said.

2-11-2011!   A day the whole world is awed by the courageous, peaceful, indigenous revolution of the Egyptian people ( in the tradition of Gandhi and Mandela) and to hope and pray for the continuing success of Their Own self-determining path towards democracy.

Isn't this an interesting development?

First you start a thread proclaiming the dangers of Egyptian independence and how the Muslim Brotherhood will take over the country.

Now suddenly you are pro Egyptian democracy, and of course the President who hasn't been in office for two years deserves all the credit.

You're truly one of a kind Sanity.

Calm down people
have drinks [:D]
enjoy... your day i was enjoying this one

Thanks for your invite to celebrate Egyptian freedom.

Every single person I know here in Australia is impressed, delighted and excited by the Egyptian people's victory. We wish the same for all the countries in the region.

The road to full democracy is now open. I hope everyone can walk down that road in peace and freedom.

Edited to add extra ice to all the drinks! [:D]

Well put. Thank you for so eloquently expressing the views of so many of us ordinary people in the West. Like many governments in the Middle East, sometimes our governments don't speak for their people on some issues.

ashjor911 -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/12/2011 5:12:51 AM)

Now since technology is bringing such an immediacy to world events, it's very exciting to see events in real time. Way to go Egypt!! Let's hope they get the truly representative government they just earned themselves!!

It being morning, how about Bloody Marys and Mimosas?

The term means Liberal Democrats. If you are using it as an insult, it means huge government, hefty taxes on business and a nanny state.

Jumpin' Joe Biden said two weeks ago that Mubarek was not a dictator but today Obama called Mubarek,..."a dictator."

Two weeks ago, Moubarek had not stepped down and we still had to deal with him personally. Now we don't.

Don't go confusing him with rational thought. He might just forget to breathe while he tries to comprehend it.

I, too, am raising my glass to the people of Tunisia and Egypt.
May their courage keep them through the difficult process that lays ahead.

The spark is there, and it seems like it found dry tinder in other Arabic States. Now to hope, that the resulting fires will be bonfires instead of funeral pyres.

mnottertail -> RE: HOLY SHIT MR MOUBARAK.....DOWN (2/12/2011 1:11:25 PM)

I am still musing about the catcallers here, how is it that the break up of the soviet union was seen as a bigtime great thing, and authoritarian islamist (note: the st, not c) throwing off their yoke of oppression as bad?

It isn't like most of these countries are going to beg for an islamic (note the c, not st) government.

And even if they don't go all the way to shipping their boys out the door, the boys running the bidness are going to have to start laying some reforms out.

Cuzzzzzzzzzzz (gawd, I hope....) we aren't gonna back em up, which should give the people some hope.  It is the liberation of people by asynchronous warfare, and we don't have to kill our boys and girls nor pay for it on the backs of our grandchildren.

Because we're viewing it through the prism of our own short term interests.

The USSR was our great bugaboo, our sworn adversary.  Its breakup meant that we had no serious perceived enemies at the time.  (Not to mention that our businesses got a whole new field of consumers to try to sell to.)

Egypt is repressive as hell, but it has helped bolster stability in the Middle East.  It has been our ally.

I'm hoping for the best... if a truly representative government does take hold there and we're able to establish good relations with it, it would go a LONG way towards helping our image in the Arab world.
