PHOENIX — Arizona lawmakers are trying to widen the state's illegal immigration crackdown with a proposal to require hospitals to confirm whether patients are in the country legally.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says it knows of no other states considering similar bills.

The proposal being heard late Monday by the Arizona Senate's judiciary committee would require hospitals to contact immigration authorities if a patient is an illegal immigrant.

Arizona lawmakers passed a bill last year that required local police, while enforcing other laws, to question the immigration status of those they suspect are in the country illegally.

A judge put that provision on hold.

I see many problems with this law, affecting not only the individual, but potentially the community at large.

Comments?

Bad idea. It does not make any sense. It is not hospitals job to enforce laws.

Fellow, they're not "enforcing" any laws.
Tazzy, and where is the downside here?
Our new governor Nicky Haley is going to be cracking down on illegals as well. And many other states will be too.
So good on Arizona.

I am not against taking measures to reduce illegal immigration. It just does not seem right to make hospital staff investigate these matters. Illegals just lie about their status and there is no way to effectively verify the immigration status of every patient. Should McDonalds ask for the immigration status of a customer before serving a burger?

Arizona won the "dumbest state award" from Bill Maher last year.I am starting to understand why Arizona won this award. This is the same state where lunatics are on the loose with guns. This is the state that wants to pull over Grandma and Grandpa when they are driving down to get ice cream. This is the state that has cut funding for life saving transpant medical organ donors. Now Arizona wants to chase away people who may need life saving medical help.Arizona won the award "dumbest state in America"award from Bill Maher for a reason.Such an honor.

So if someone has a heart attack in south carolina,,,,if they aren't US citizens you won't admit them to the hospital? Do you realize the South Carolina's economy is mostly tourist driven?

That's not what the article said. It said they would have to report them. It doesn't mention treatment at all.

Do you realize the South Carolina's economy is mostly tourist driven?
What does that have to do with reporting illegal immigrants? Do you think that the tourists are all illegals?

I bet the checking wont be done with new hires, (thyre already killing people with their cuts) it will be done with current  front line staff which of COURSE could mean that someone dies for the sake of time for filling out forms because someone  looks shifty or eeeelegal.
Unless you racially profile who comes in the hospital, arent you gonna have to have someone checking EVERY potential patient?not all tourists are WASPS
!!!!
Working in emerg is bad enough without having extra police hangin out to do immigration checks.
Is there such a plethora of money for existing  police to do this job??

One leads to the next. Do you suppose they will treat them if they are illegals or decide to put them on a bus?

Not what I am saying. But, why stop with simple illegals. If a tourist has a heart attack then why should our hospitals have to take them right?

...well-- no- if they pay cash.

If they have no way of paying - then why are they bumming the services.  Locally-  people been using ER instead of DR appointments.   It has become a joke.

While I am not unsympathetic to the problems that illegal immigration is causing Arizona and the other border states, I find this idea most distasteful. I have always looked upon the medical profession as a calling, a noble profession that should rise above mere petty politics when it comes to treating the sick and injured. We as a society, when articulating our noblest instincts, expect that doctors on the battlefield will treat the captured, wounded, enemy soldier the same as one of our own wounded. We expect them to treat anyone who comes into the emergency room whether they be prince or pauper. Yeah, I know, that is usually doesn’t work out that way but that is the direction we should move in when it comes to medical treatment. This law moves us in the other direction. One cannot dismiss the problems of funding but that is for the politicians (and collarme posters) to endlessly haggle over. When there is a person in need of their expertise in front of them, the doctor’s only concern should be practicing medicine – not who the person in front of them is… or where they are from.

The downside is that people who need medical treatment may not seek it out for fear that they will be deported. The downside is needless suffering. I am all in favor of increased border security but this is not a solution to the problem of illegal immigration.
