I don't think California is a union state either, and they're in the shitter as bad as Texas, are they not?

California is so much a union state, Moon, that you need to join the SEIU in order to take care of your sick grandmother.

Bull. Many fields require their employees to take seminars and classes to stay current.

Bull. There a few fields where the licensing requirements require such but most fields do not require state licensing.

They're expected to teach at a very high standard. That is no mean feat.

According to Eliza's link in the other thread, 20% of high school graduates are functionally illiterate.

Confusion of expectation and outcome.

Then you have no idea what a person with a good degree can make. As I said above I have a BS in math, required for HS math teachers, and was making just over 100k/year until I got sick with 10 weeks of vacation a year. And my vacation was when I wanted not designated by someone else.

And you think that's anywhere near the average for someone with a 4 year degree?

For someone with a math degree? It significantly below avergae. I stayed with a company I liked in the face of headhunters with much better offers.

30? Check your facts. In Wisconsin, the average class size is 13-16 students per teacher.

Good for Wisconsin. Most places that isn't remotely true.

You might want to look around, there is a thread active on this forum full of bashing of teachers.

One thread, ok.

Nice attempt to avoid admitting the fact.

When I was teaching, a starting teacher (23,000 in 1988) in Miami/Dade county, FL made less than a starting garbage man.

When I left teaching for the private sector, it was for a 50% raise in salary (26K to 39K). This was not atypical for my colleagues in the field who left.

No offense, Hillwilliam, but that was quite a while ago.
http://www.teacher-world.com/teacher-salary/wisconsin.html

That's absolutely true, it WAS a long time ago. The FACT is that beginning teachers made less than a beginninng garbage man. Wanna bet it hasn't changed a hell of a lot?

Wanna also bet that the brightest and best teachers get the hell out for LARGE raises to work in the private sector and not have to deal with little gang scumlets and educrats that have never seen the inside of a classroom?

Similar legislation is being considered here in TN but it isn't getting any press.

TN is a "Right to Work State" which means you don't have to join a union to work. It is probably not a coincidence that we are one of the half dozen or so states that are NOT in serious financial trouble at this time.

It is a coincidence. Texas has the least unionized public workforce and is in the worst ttrouble of any state.

Interesting you should claim that since TN has NO union public workforce as far as I know. How do you get less than that?

Seems there are 2 AFSCME locals in TN. There is also a Tennessee Education Association which represents teachers in some public school districts.

"Collective Bargainin *IS* one of those important corner stones that make up the concept of a union. "

Funny funny man. Where in the Constitution is collective bargaining? Where in the  Federalist?

2 out of 95 counties and 150 or so districts.

The important thing is that you are not REQUIRED to join to work therefore the unions have their nuts cut off.

Calif budget gap: 49.3%

Money grade, Texas: B
Money grade, Calif:  D+

http://www.udwa.org/services-resources/about-union-dues/

Not as spelled out as I'd like to see it, but good enough for government work. This computer has an Adobe allergy, and the FAQ from the state authority is in pdf. Try "Calfornia IHSS provider FAQ" in your favorite browser, and look for, "do I have to join the union?" if you need more.

I still think it is funny that the three unions that supported Walker in the election are immune to this legislation.

I call bullshit.

Last I saw by percentage it was the least organized, do keep in mind it is a larger state than TN.

As to Texas' budget problems, they do 2 year budgets and they're short $27 billion for the next 2. Only California is approaching those numbers and it is a larger state

I did what you asked. The word union never appears in that PDF.

More proof this isn't about the budget in Wisconsin

All public employee unions have agreed to contribute more to their pension and medical insurance but Walker still insists on stripping them of their right to bargain collectively.

Also in a quite funny development the douche bag party rallied in favor of Walker and his assault on people who work for a living but were outnumbered 30 to 1 by the pro union demonstrators.
