high risk of water intoxication for instance.

tazzygirl -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 7:20:20 AM)

As Master Ron pointed out, and as I pointed out in my former post, water intoxication is a severe problem in infancy.

Water Intoxication in Infants
For healthy adults, nothing seems to quench a thirst better than plain, pure water. We're encouraged to drink several glasses a day to keep our systems in balance. But for children under 1 year old – and especially during the first nine months of life – drinking too much water can be dangerous.

In fact, according to pediatricians like James P. Keating, MD, medical director of the St. Louis Children's Hospital Diagnostic Center, too much water dilutes a baby's normal sodium levels and can lead to seizures, coma, brain damage and death.

Infants are not little adults. [8|]

Moonhead -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 7:22:45 AM)

Apart from anything else, they need the nutrition to build themselves an adult body. Childhood malnutrition has been linked with severe retardation (or whatever the medical term is) in adults, for a start.

You are very right, Moon. However, the "discussion" was started over my comment that cutting back these programs can lead to starvation and other problems.

Moonhead -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 7:26:54 AM)

True. The long term problems only become apparent if the kid doesn't die of starvation, or any of the other problems you've named, before becoming an adult. A lot of kids who don't get fed properly or often enough aren't lucky enough to have to deal with being left retarded.

Im not saying these programs dont need cuts. Im sure all the programs that are federally funded could benefit from some streamlining. Just seems like they are picking on those who voted Obama in. Think about it.

Just seems like the Republicans are doing what the majority of voters last November told them to do. "We won." - Nancy Pelosi. "Elections have consequences." - Harry Reid. "They [Republicans] can come along for the ride but they'll have to sit in the back[of the bus]" - Barack Hussein Obama. Remember those?

The problem in this case is that they are being nickel smart and dollar dumb.

Look for return on investment.

tazzygirl -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 7:44:11 AM)

Show me one post I made where I agreed with those sentiments. Just one.

Now, show me one post where you agree that, sometimes, both parties get all caught up in their own power trip that they cant seem to understand the basic concept of... their decisions, based upon party platforms, affect REAL PEOPLE.

Isn't that the problem with Republican economics in a nutshell?

What exactly did you win?

Control of the House while the Senate will override any of the nonsense that comes out of the House?

What?  Did you really just say that?

More to the point, do you really support that?

tazzygirl -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 8:04:34 AM)

Rule, calm down, please. You have to remember not everyone who posts has had children.

Moonhead -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 8:13:16 AM)

Well yeah, but I haven't any kids either, and I can still recognise that as obnoxious nonsense. Surely a little sympathy or half a clue about childhood development is all you need to see that?

tazzygirl -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 8:15:04 AM)

Would seem so. But many are still caught up in their own childhood... if you get my drift. [;)]

hlen5 -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 8:16:23 AM)

One doesn't have to have had kids to know not getting enough good food isn't a great idea.

Tazzy please tell me this wasn't a passive aggressive slam to one who is childless (no matter how outrageously provoked).

Moonhead -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 8:16:44 AM)

Fair enough.

tazzygirl -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 8:21:43 AM)

Some people equate the first year of development as any other. Contrary to that belief, it isnt true. However, many dont realize the problems associated with giving too much water to an infant. Some physicians have even come out against infancy swimming programs because the babies tend to gulp too much water.

Im hardly passive agressive. Nor am I slamming people who dont have children. Labor and Delivery taught me that many things that I took as common sense, others didnt even begin to think about. Bath water being too hot or cold. Using tap water for formulas. Filling a crib with stuffed animals. Even how to change a diaper. You would be surprised at the number of things people dont know.

But then, they can whine that "We had all these great budget cuts to balance things but those mean old Democrats blocked us"

It's called posturing.

hlen5 -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 8:34:06 AM)

I'm with you on the harm malnutrition costs, your post (#55, including the wink) doesn't feel like straight objectivity to me.

tazzygirl -> RE: Women and children first. (2/25/2011 8:42:59 AM)

Guess you didnt "get my drift" then, so I will spell it out.

Many so called "adults" today are so wrapped up in themselves and their own lives. Growing up, I had to babysit... my brothers for one... other kids for money. I learned alot about taking care of babies from some great parents, not just my own. Im not saying kids dont do that today, but Im willing to bet its far less than there used to be.

Now, if you are still upset by my post, then you will have to be upset. If the shoe fits and all that, then it fits. If it doesnt, why worry. My post was based upon experience with many mothers.
