debunks another oft cited analysis
Cliff notes: What was judged to be the "correct" answer was outright wrong, debatable, and/or highly biased

Actual fact, bigjournalism is another "fine" Andrew Breitbart production. Absolutely nothing on it is even moderately close to the truth.

In contrast, ad hominen is just one of your persistent fallacies.

mnottertail -> RE: USA Education Levels (2/23/2011 2:02:03 PM)

and that is a rather useless observation since calling a cadaver dead is by definition an ad hominem but nevertheless completely true.

Epic Fail, stud.

kalikshama -> RE: USA Education Levels (2/23/2011 2:03:04 PM)

I had to google Andrew Breitbart. Salon refreshed my memory about the Shirley Sherrod story. AB is also going after the First Lady about that cheeseburger as well. Slow news week?

While not exactly on point, this shows that viewers of The Daily Show/Colbert Nation are best informed and people who get their news from Fox or network morning shows least informed.

And there are others that show the opposite. BFD.

Which you are apparently sworn to secrecy about.

You could show us but then you would have to kill us.

Joether, take a walk through Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, Brockton or New Bedford and Fall River.
Plenty of "Liberal ignorance" there.
Didn't they used to call it, ....."Kennedy Country?"
Boarded up buildings, high school dropout rates of 60%, rampant drug use, high unemployment rates. Old Ted voted for all of those "free trade deals that put tens of thousands of his constituents out of work, didn't he?
But, he was educated. Oh,.....wait,.....he was expelled from Harvard U. for cheating. Awwww,....."the liberal lion!"

Popeye, if you EVER quoted accurate facts it would be considered a miracle.

Nowhere in Massachusetts is there a dropout rate of 60%, in fact the entire state has a drop out rate of less than 3% for a total of 8,585 students (2.9 percent) out of 292,372 high school students in grades 9-12 statewide dropped out of school.

It is true that Kennedy was expelled from Harvard, but was reinstated after he served a two year term in the army.

The state wide unemployment rate is comparable to the national average and is in fact a little less than the national average at 8.4% according to the most recent numbers.

I really like how you and your kind are so fond of rewriting facts, or should I say lying out of your ass.

JLF, and it would be a miracle if your reading comprehension ever broke 40%, I wasn't talking about the whole state of Massachusetts just the areas mentioned above. Go read it again.

If you going to state he's incorrect, and that your arguement actually is correct, then post the evidence. Your post fails to show a source, from which the arguement your making comes from. You list specific towns in the Commonwealth, with specific concepts (in this case, high school drop out rates). Either:

A) This information comes directly from a valid and legitimate source
B) This information is a complete lie.

Since according to the DOE of Mass, the drop out rate for 2007-2008 (the most recent figures) is at 3.4%. That is exceedingly below your 60% drop out rate. With a simple Goggle search, I found this little gem. It states that for 2007-2008, the drop out rate for Fall River (one of the towns you listed) is 6.2% (or....1/10th of your statement).

Now WHO would know more about the Commonwealth of Massachusett's drop out rate?

A) popeye1250
B) The Department of Education for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Hillwilliam -> RE: USA Education Levels (2/23/2011 5:20:41 PM)

When folks first started bringing this stuff in the 70's, I was in HS and I did some pre-internet lQQkin.

It seems that the "official scores" of Japan (I cant speak for the others because I didn't see them) are from the students that were picked for "college track". about 6th or 7th grade there, you are put on a "track" based on test scores.

US test scores are based on everyone from "Gifted" to mentally handicapped folks.

Their scores are artificially raised and ours represent a real cross section of a population.

I'm not saying that we have the best schools but if you eliminate the 'spin' that we are bombarded with every day, We aint that damn bad.

We are STILL the most innovative sunsabitches on the planet.

Hillwilliam -> RE: USA Education Levels (2/23/2011 5:25:08 PM)

By the way, folks, I dont have any links for the above. You actually have to look at 40 or so years of publications, books, etc,

If you want to explore it, feel free. If you want to be anti-American and call it bullshit, that's ok too.

Alas, U.S. ignorance spans political ideologies.
But it's heavily weighted towards those who espouse conservatism.

Music, not to Joether, you could be a drug pusher with a sixth grade education but if you voted for Oblunder you're a genious.
Education is a funny thing, some of the smartest people I've ever met never went to college and some of the dumbest did.

Which category do you put yourself in?

Rule, an intelligent person wouldn't ask that question.

So it is a fact that people who get thier news from Bill O'Riely are more informed than people who get thier news from NPR.

Yeah lol.

The funny thing is the 35% rating among Fox viewers is the same as the national average. Really if what we're going for is "Fox viewers are uninformed idiots" you'll also have to go with "Americans are uninformed idiots" which is sort of funny.

pyroaquatic -> RE: USA Education Levels (2/24/2011 3:14:36 AM)

.........................................................okay. Someone PLEASE tell me.... tell me tell me.... why does it matter where ONE gets their news sources relates to how intelligent/educated someone is?

I received most of my information from independent study and poured my spare inschool and afterschool time in the libraries. IN BOOKS.

Books-thankfully-do not have commercials and while I dearly love my Discovery I eat books faster than I ever could watch a television program.

Frankly I had major difficulties in classrooms with more than five people in it so I was placed in a special programs along with my regular classroom schedule. It was quite focused and intensive.

So how was my educational experience in all?

The teachers-even though they were underpaid and responsible for future building blocks-actually cared. Of course I cared about my education as well which was interesting because the rest of my class mates focused on drugs, alcohol, fucking, and socializing.

And so I continue my independent studies and even with grants and loans I still can't afford a college education. Damnit.

Ridiculous. There are people on this planet that can find several non-poisonous plants and combine them in a certain way so when they drench a pond it starves the oxygen in the water at a level so people can literally scoop up the fish (both big and small) with ease.

In Australia bushmen teach the kids how to properly use fire by letting them set fires to the brush. Doing this allows for new growth and new game to come by. It also alerts others where the bushmen are.

In other words,

people are sick(no wait, that is me. @_@). Education is Key to building better futures. blah blah blah.... i'm really tired of this blame the other wing bullshit/call people names. What are you in fucking grade school?

Careful, you might get cooties.

Because then all you have to do is find out what news programs someone watches and you can dismiss them out of hand without listening to what they have to say.

This was a thread about the standard of education in the usa;the discussion is entirely you lot insulting each other.

Which answers the question of whether whether Americans are educated about how to construct an argument, at least.
