"In my opinion, fear of HFCS borders on paranoid hysteria. "

It's nice to have an opinion. However consider the reason HFCS was put into food in the first place. Do you know ? Do you know why margarine was invented, or for that matter hydrogenated anything ?

The system used to work, why did they fix it ?

However consider the reason HFCS was put into food in the first place. Do you know?

i think it was something to do with a sugar shortage, or price of sugar, or something like that. Some sort of market crisis. Corn syrup was used as an economic substitute, and then it just stayed that way ever since. Nowadays, i think the U.S. government has an interest in keeping corn syrup as the sweetener.

Do you know why margarine was invented, or for that matter hydrogenated anything ?

i think they were trying to find a cheap substitute for butter, and also create a fat that was less saturated than butter but more saturated than oil, for health reasons.

The system used to work, why did they fix it ?

They were just trying to be cheap and make a buck. i don't like the processed stuff either. (Mostly because it doesn't taste good.) But that's different than believing that it's evil.

i think sometimes people have weird attitudes toward food. For example, someone does a study that says oat bran is healthy, or red wine is, and all of a sudden everyone is eating it like it's the cure for cancer. It becomes this huge fad, and stays that way until the next trend comes along. And then the opposite is true, certain foods become "villified". Eggs were a few years ago. Coconut oil. And now high fructose corn syrup, which consists of fructose and glucose, neither of which is dangerous.

There's a better case against margarine. i think it's been proven to cause cancer if you saute in it, and the trans fats it contains are only marginally less saturated than butter, so the health benefits are minimal at best. But it won't kill You to eat it, nor should You be afraid to drink a glass of soda. Which is what i mean when i say people are paranoid about those foods.

Preservatives, pesticides, hormones- those are bad for you. The overuse of antibiotics is going to kill us all. And *anything* eaten in excess will cause problems. i just think people need to calm down instead of crying, OH MY GOD, it's high fructose corn syrup, like it's the same as putting arsenic in the food. And, yes, that's my opinion. (*winks*)

i like You, Termy. (You too, Hunky). And i don't think that avoiding these foods is a bad idea.

hugs,
pam

High Fructose Corn Syrup is CHEAP and it doesn't crystalize on the shelf like beet sugar or cane sugar.

It is currently fashionable to slam corn syrup but, meh, it makes no differenct. You would do better to look for thinks less overprocessed and chemically blended for storage.

Make your own bloody tomato soup and freeze it instead of doing the canned junk. All it is is pureed tomato, milk, garlic, salt... and if you like... sugar.

Margarine is gray. It has alot less appeal than a bowl of Crisco. Fugly. Back in wartime, it was invented partly because of shortages, again cost, perhaps rationing, whatever. In the beginning they were not allowed to put the yellow food coloring in it for whatever reason. You got a packet of coloring with it. Health concerns were no concern, much. They may not have thought it healthy, but butter hadn't been villified.

HFCS became "popular" because certain countries wouldn't cut the deal "we" wanted, and there was not enough money to be made using sugar. Mexico doesn't have that problem because they aren't hated by every goddamn good country on the planet. In a way, we do not have MFN status with cane producing countries. Fancy that.

If I actually ever ate tomato soup, I would make it. Really, using it in other things is a shortcut. They are forcing me to do what I want to do anyway, make more and buy less. I am lazy, but not so lazy as to eat something I know, well I know that they don't know what it'll do to me. Product testing my ass. Why is aspartame still in use ?

Like drugs, so expensive because of the "extensive" testing required. The mouse in my basement's ass ! First of all, people bitch - rightly so - why the hell do we have to pay for all this shit and then they sell the same drugs in other countries for a fraction of the price ? Why don't they pay for some of this ?

And this WHAT ? Every damn day on the TV is another ad for a class action lawsuit against a drug company. Just like that $150,000 hip replacement, those are being recalled now. Now that's a hell of a deal. Package up your replacement hip in it's original shipping container and return it for a refund. Yeah right.

People feel safe with all these regulations, but they are hooked on a feeling, we are not safe at all. The food pyramid has the effect of stuffing people like a fucking turkey. And now you better not eat the turkey because ............

If the situation wasn't so real, bad and insidious, I would be ROFL at the supposed incompetence displayed. But I can no lonmger attribute to idiocy that which can be explained by corruption. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you wish, but I've lived too long and seen too much to think the world is just full of rich philanthropists who have our best interests at heart.

I heard that those who own McD's franchises don't eat at McD's. I guess they know what's in it. Do they tell us ? Why don't they tell us ?

Yogurt will always have sugar. It comes from the milk, so I read, but some yogurt has less than others. You can even get yogurts with only 1 ingrediants, milk. And it has 5 live cultures. Some of it tastes really nasty though, I've found.

Yogurt might be a good choice, if I can find it without sugar, and more importantly HFCS.

I also can't believe they are still selling shit with aspartame in it. You gotta be kidding me.

You have to develop a taste for plain unsweetened yogurt but when you do, the other stuff will taste like shit to you.

I find that trying to avoid processed foods, making more things from scratch (like bread and pasta products) eating foods as close to their natural state as possible, knowing what the 'dirty' fruits and veggies are, and eating less meat in general while making sure what I do eat is of excellent quality.........makes me feel one hell of a lot better!

That being said, last night Generic Dude made dinner. Pork tenderloins he got out of the frozen section, same with onion rings and fries, and store bought buns. I feel like SHIT today!

Margarine was invented because of money.
HFCS was invented because of money.
McDonalds puts cow eyeballs in their burgers, and they don't tell us because of money.

Money makes the world go round. i will grant You *that* conspiracy. And if You want to object to certain foods because of the imperialist nature of their production, i say go for it. Boycott Coca-Cola, but do it because of the company's tactics in India. Boycott McDonalds because they buy mutant chickens that are so morbidly obese that their legs break from underneath them. Because THAT'S the evil, not corn syrup.

Pesonally, food processing in this country makes me squeamish. The notion that artificial foods like margarine, "cheese product", sugar substitute, and nonfat mayonnaise, are "healthier" than their natural substitutes, makes me laugh. And don't get me started on those chickens.

Damn, nearly the whole world is evil. i'll tell You what- boycott whatever You want.

"It's easier than you think to get a big-ass outdoor freezer and buy meat on the hoof or with the feathers on from local small farms and backyard poultry keepers.  "

I'll pay you to do the run, and a bonus if you can get me some raw milk. I can't drink that shit they sell in the stores.

Two gallons of lovely grass fed raw milk in my fridge right now.  Correction, one and a half gallons; we made major inroads on it.  Om nom nom.  Craigslist is definitely your friend for finding backyard farmers and getting a trade economy going.  There are very real risks to drinking raw milk, which is why you had better know those farmers and their operation.  Or keep a goat yourself and be absolutely meticulous about cleanliness in milk collection.  If you can get Happy Cow products in your area I would highly recommend them.  Small farm operations where the cows have plenty of room, are well socialized and not stressed, and quality grass to eat (not grain or corn) are awesome.  I paid $7/gallon, totally worth it.  Legally raw milk can be sold only as "pet food" in this state, but what you do with it after you buy it and take it home is your beeswax.  Both of my pets do drink it of course, but my pets have two legs and college degrees.  LOL

I actually do have a small farm-food, mostly-kinkster informal cooperative going on.  Some farm animals and wholesale crates of vegetables come in packages too big for one household, so sharing happens.  So yes, it's actually realistic for you to get in on the goodies if you're local to North Carolina.  I'm guessing you're not however.

If you really want milk that tastes like raw milk by low heat pasteurized milk, heated to 145 and held for 30 minutes). It kills the deadly pathogens that can occur in milk and does very minimal damage to the milk. It is more expensive than grocery store milk, since it takes longer to process and has a much shorter shelf life, but much safer.

Just a little aside here, but humans are the only animals that drink the milk of another species and it just isn't meant to be. Milk is not needed and is in fact very bad for human beings. We are not meant to digest it. I think it's gross. If you really think about it, we are consuming the organic material of a lactating creature meant for it's young.

for babies? Of course. Human babies need human milk. For a period of time anyway, unless of course the mother chooses not to or can not and I have no dog in that fight either way. Human beings drinking cows milk is becoming more and more out of favor in the scientific and medical community.  It causes or contributes to obesity, diabetes, allergies, autoimmune disorders, etc...it's not some weird extreme view, it's so common in fact that my GP has information in her office regarding that and also calcium substitutes, etc. in case people are interested.

i've heard that cow milk is unhealthy for humans. i'm not disputing the claim. i have no idea if it's true, although it seems to me that most every food has been looked down on by the scientic community at some point, just as most every food has been toted as some kind of miracle elixir at another. i tend to be suspicious of medical wisdom when it comes to food. It seems to me that the only sensible solution is to eat food that is as natural and as close to it's origen as possible, and to only indulge in moderation, whether it's in fat, sugar, caffiene, alcohol, meat, dairy, whatever.

My point was actually only this: to me, drinking the organic material of a lactating animal meant for it's young- does not seem gross.

Interesting. I read somewhere that cow's milk lacked certain nutrients needed for the proper development of the human brain.

That would explain a few things eh ?

There are other species' that consume the milk of another - domesticated aminals, because we give it to them.

And now, just what are we eating when we eat an egg ?

Maybe it's time to rethink how we eat. Up until a couple years ago I had no problem with store boughten milk. Then I did. Later I read about something and believe me I tried to find a reference to it, but results were not forthcoming so I won't mention it. But the time seems to coincide, and I didn't find out until later.

But I can tell the difference between milk now and milk before, even the store boughten milk. It doesn't spoil the same, it doesn't get sour like in the old days, it gets bitter. Whatever it is, it can't be good. If the milk is sour it's no good. If the milk is supposed to be sour and isn't, does that make it good ?

Then the other problem. I'll probably have to drive forty miles to get raw or less processed milk, is it worth the trip for a couple of gallons ? It's not going to have much shelf life. Actually you can freeze milk. I don't know how that would affect raw milk, but frozen store bought milk takes over a week to thaw properly. If you drink it too soon it's like - chalky ? It seems to have particles in it, no doubt the fat. It takes time for this to disolve back in. I've done it, it takes a bit over a week to thaw and mix, and while refrgerated you have to shake it up every day or so. After that, it's OK.

But it's not just the milk, it's damnear everything. Are they ever going to set some regulations that are actually good for people ? Milk is important nutrition wise if you can get it. Food is so nutrient free these days it's like a supplement. Now how to replace that ? Damifino.

I guess we're all gonna die !

That's OK though. I really think if I put out a food product and put right on the label "NUTRIENT FREE" people would kill for it. They'll kill for a flat TV, they proved it a couple of black fridays ago at a Walmart in NY, remember ? They stampeded like cows. Hmmmmmmm.

my thing with milk is that the majority of non-caucasian people are lactose intolerant.

quote:

ORIGINAL: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/lactoseintolerance/

*"Lactose intolerance is a common condition that is more likely to occur in adulthood, with a higher incidence in older adults. Some ethnic and racial populations are more affected than others, including African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, and Asian Americans. The condition is least common among Americans of northern European descent."*

so milk drinking for "health" really only applies to a small percentage of people, but has been forced on everyone, even when it actually makes you sick, and your own genetic disposition is treated more like a disease because it deviates from someone else's biased version of "normal." =p haha
however ALL PEOPLE nearly cease production of enzymes to digest milk after the age of two.
cow's milk is designed to make a baby cow grow like 500 pounds in a year. it's loaded with stuff that baby cows need, but that humans (particularly adults) really DON'T. sure we make "low fat" varieties but so many of the positive aspects in milk can just be found elsewhere.

i discovered my lactose intolerance one terrible, terrible night in 7th grade. =p that said, i love ice cream. and cheese. achilles heel...
