Please quote someone of import on the right who claims that "drill baby drill" is the ONLY solution.

Who on the right is 'on the record' of restoring the regulatory structure gutted by the Commodities Futures Modernization Act of 2000?

In all fairness to GWB, he inherited the gutted regulatory structure created by Robert Rubin, Larry Summers (lefties), Phil Gramm (righties) and Alan Greenspan (the Ayn Rand crowd).

GWB is only guilty of smiling stupidly for 8 years, and asserting "childrens do learn".  Has the deregulation-minded voting 'children' really learned yet?

Were we to resume or begin drilling in all the places that the Obama regime (and friends)  has us locked out of, or open the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada in a timely fashion, this constant Mideast volatility wouldnt have near the dramatic effect that it does on the futures market.

The futures market in and of itself isnt bad or evil at all, I dont think you understand its purpose or how it works.

Then why did gas go over $4.00 a gallon while the Bush administration was allowing that drilling?

domiguy -> RE: $4-$5 gallon gas on the way/Gas prices up 28 cents in 10 days! (3/7/2011 6:32:11 AM)

I hope it goes to $8.00 a gallon. Get some people off the road and out of my way.

If only Obama was indeed a fool. He isn't. He knows exactly what he's doing.

Indeed.  Obama promptly put Rubin and Summers on his advisory payroll.

But then again, candidate McCain repeatedly called on Phil Gramm as his 'answer man' for all things related to markets and the economy.

What a small, tight-knit world it is, huh?

If people would stop buying for 24-48 hours, I would bet what is happening in Lybia, and Saudi Arabia would quickly cease being the information used to screw us over with.     M
You're blaming the gas stations when the price of what they're buying has gone up. The reality is that wholesale gasoline has gone up, the retailer passes that onto you just like any other retailer. And by boycotting you're just putting the squeeze on a bunch of people that make minimun wage, because they're the ones that will get sent home due to lack of business.

When i worked at a gas station- our mark up was .08  -.10 a gallon.  back then gas was  $1.31

Today, very few gas station owners set the street price. Most have lost control of that to wholesalers when they sign the branding contract.

Exactly. Here in California, start with the state gets $.43 per gallon, then the brand gets their cut, then take out what they paid for wholesale, then the station gets the rest. (To pay more taxes, wages, insurance and rent/mortgage)

Don't get me wrong, it's a profitable busines, but most people don't realize that the profit margin is no where as big as they think it is.

I live in Florida and you risk your life every time you try to drive during snowbird season.

I'm going to start a new reality show with clips of old people trying to drive.  It's hilarious.

You could speed up drilling all you want, you could open up all undrilled area to drilling, and you could embrace all those green fads you want, and NONE OF IT solves 90% of the problem overnight as RETURNING previously-existing regulations to the futures market does.

What good does drilling more, drilling faster do when the incremental output from that is manipulated in the futures markets too?

Its never has been about the actual supply of oil.  Its has always been about INVESTOR demand driven by a crisis trigger, not refinery demand

September 22, 2008 was the day of the record $25 spike in oil prices in a 24 hr period.  It was the first trading day (monday) after Bernanke & Paulson ran to congress saying they needed $800 billion or we wouldnt have an economy the following week.  But its good to know that if we had been doing that extra drilling all along, it would have resulted in only a $24.50 record price increase instead.

YOU are da man with da plan!

Such nonsense.

Do you know what happened to oil and gas prices when Bush lifted a mortartorium on drilling? They dropped immediately.

SPECULATION CANNOT MATERIALLY IMPACT THE PRICE OF DELIVERED OIL. PERIOD.

Since you apparently dont understand the difference between commodities speculation and real estate speculation there is no point in your participation.

I agree, same damn thing.
Prices continue to rise, and I did see gas damn near $4 a gallon for regular in D.C.
At the rate it is going it might be $5 a gallon here in a few weeks.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: $4-$5 gallon gas on the way/Gas prices up 28 cents in 10 days! (3/7/2011 7:53:35 PM)

Oil hit $147.30 July 2008. Foreclosure filings surpassed 3 million in 2008 (USA Today). Gosh, think there's some causation there?

People have to work. Wages are stagnant. People actually lost purchasing power because of the massive transfer of wealth to the rich. So when people commute, and the price of gas goes up, discretionary purchasing is the first to go. But what happens after no more cable or movies or new clothes? Gotta pay the utilities, or else they get cut off. People stop taking their meds, or cut back. They buy cheaper foods. They put more essential purchases on credit cards (Mastercard LOVES $150 oil). But they forego paying their mortgages, reasoning that they can buy some time and maybe make up the payments in the future, or they can always move to an apartment. So people stop eating out. They don't buy clothes. No more movies. No more pedicures. There's a ripple effect, a downward spiral.

And the moronic mouthbreahters on the right think that the answer is tax cuts for the rich and unregulating markets. It boggles my mind when I try to contemplate how fucking stupid the "free-marketers" are.

Are you saying Real Estate isn't a commodity? Tell that to the folks that invest in REIT's

Real Estate Investment Trust.

It's a commodity just like silver, oil, wheat or concentrated OJ

The free market system has helped to ruin the middle and working class. After all the gains made in the last 50 years, we are spiraling down.
Don't get me started on unbridled outsourcing and the unbridled free market crap tonight.

The free market system created the middle class and enables people to build wealth, its government debt and bureaucracies and endless regulations and red tape thats forcing business and industry to flee our shores

Willbeur, I know you like to pretend you are a financial genius but once again you prove yourself totally clueless.

U.S. gas prices about much more than oil

Gas prices rise when oil prices rise, and fall when oil prices fall — except when they don't. What you pay at your gas station depends on an array of factors, from what happens on an exchange in New York to what the competition is charging.

This can rankle drivers, especially these days. Gas reached a national average of $3.51 a gallon on Monday. That's up 14 cents, or 4 percent, over the past week. The week before, the average rose 20 cents, the steepest increase since September 2008.

A year ago, the price was $2.75. The average is the highest it's ever been this time of year, and analysts expect it to climb higher in the coming weeks.

Unlike an iPhone or a pair of jeans or a Big Mac, oil and gas are commodities, and their prices can change every second at the New York Mercantile Exchange and other trading hubs. Those far-off changes affect the cost of the next day's commute.

A regulated free market system, and especially (post-depression) a regulated financial system created the middle class.

A deregulated financial system since 1980 (when that guy you jerk tears over was first elected) has resulted in $4 gas, $700 trillion in ponzi derivatives, globalization that drives jobs to the poorest nations with the lowest standard of living, and a brain-dead cheerleader force that actually thinks $15 trillion on the government credit card is worse than the private sector's $700 trillion unregulated "insurance" ponzi scheme.

Gas Alert!!
Gas prices shoot up overnight!

$5 a gallon now a reality for some.
