Don't take such a dim view. Those who analyse and adapt survive. I've already been called all kinds of names so I have no compunction against laying it on the line. If we are the best, the brightest, the smartesst, it is time to fucking put up or shut up. The Japs and the others all got the easy jobs from us. Take the hard job. Take the hard job or compete with others who can do it. That is the economy as much as we might not like it. There are a couple of milliion millionaires in this country, be one. I don't care enough to become one, but really, anyone can. There is a very simple formula for it, just get some money. Build a business, learn to hire the right people and delegate properly, and walk out, except to collect the money. Rinse and repeat, do it again, then collect your money from two places. Do it again and then collect from three, then four, then five and so on. Your "job" will be collecting money. This is still a country with opportunity, for those who don't give a shit, who want money. Maybe it's a bit harder than before, but it still works. T^T

It highlights Krugmans propensity toward stretching the bounds of logic to make some socialist point. He seems to agree that there is a "hole" in employment, with high wage jobs and low wage jobs expanding, and a gap that no longer needs to be filled by highly educated workers. [Ignoring the fact that its the educated who will be looked at to fill the high wage jobs that do open up, but thats not the biggest problem with his nonsense]. He then argues that we need to restore bargaining power so "superstars and the ordinary can both have good wages"....after already agreeing that good wage jobs dont exist! And on top of it he wants to guarantee benefits. What the fuck does he think benefits are? They are compensation, you moron. If there are no good wage jobs there is also no room to increase compensation in the form of benefits. How an idiot like him survives at Princeton I dont know. He must have pictures of somebody in the locker room of the Baker rink getting sucked off by a Zamboni.

We can not think of education just in terms of money. It is difficult for young people to self-educate, most do not have necessary discipline. I advise young people to go to college, but as a major or a side project learn something that earns living (e.g. computer programming, dentistry, teachers certificate etc...). "Safe" dead end janitorial and landscaping jobs P. Krugman mentions could get you into lifetime financial struggle. Poor understanding how things work makes perfect consumer and voter, but I am not sure, it is ideal situation for an individual.

I've done just fine without a formal education. I've had no student loans to pay back either. I have never bought into the belief that a college degree with critical to sucessful employment. That being said, there was no path of employment I was interested in that required a college degree. If I had wanted to be a teacher/doctor/attorney/engineer/etc etc etc.......there would have been value in it. I didn't, there wasn't.

I agree with everything Krugman wrote here; he just didn't go nearly far enough. There are any number of books predicting The End of Work. I liked Rifkins I have taken a recent interest in a couple of articles of or by Ray Kurzweil. Ordered his "Fantastic Voyage" book. The basic idea is that we are on the cusp of great things, that computers are nearly able to design the computers that will design the computers that will.... design the computers that will be capable of creative thought. At which point the only limit to our exponentially expanding knowledge base will be our ability to build instruments capable of collecting the (sub-atomic? extra-galactic?) data the computers need. So they'll tell us how to build the robots that can build the robots that can... Manipulate gravity? Time? Space? All three? Jobs? Education? You jest, right? Medicine? 12th-generation nanobots answering to a 20th generation wifi analog. Wall street bankers? A simple numbers crunching-program? Pilots? Ever heard of drones? The future will rain soup if we don't kill each other before we get there; all we'll have to do is stand outside with bowls. Unless the bots turn on us. Someone needs to Put Asimovs Three Laws of Robotics on steroids. 2050 will, imo, bear as much resemblance to 2011 as 2011 does to 2011 BC.

They're all "for profit" now, some of them just don't pay taxes. There's nothing "wrong" with having a degree. There's a lot wrong when so many people have degrees. It's called "the law of supply and demand" which so many people think they can simply ignore. Also, the U.S. is headed in the wrong direction with this "global economy" crap! Anyone who touts it stands to make a lot of money from it while it makes most people poor! But,.....you can buy cheap imported plastic junk at Walmart's right? Whenever anyone in govt. or business says they're "doing it for the consumer" the hoi poloi are already going to be in the bent over grab your ankles position! Anyone who says "it's for the consumer" is NOT your friend! Look at NAFTA, it's been a disaster for the last 16 years and right from the start! How many white collar jobs did that kill? I usually agree with Krugman, but the point he misses is you will always need human intervention. But I think the main point of the article was in his summary: So if we want a society of broadly shared prosperity, education isn’t the answer — we’ll have to go about building that society directly. We need to restore the bargaining power that labor has lost over the last 30 years, so that ordinary workers as well as superstars have the power to bargain for good wages. We need to guarantee the essentials, above all health care, to every citizen.
