ORIGINAL: Termyn8or True. But their credibility is based on the results. If you were an actuary and found that there are alot of home build cyclotrons, or even meth labs in a given area, the rates will be escalated. It's been a long time since I've seen a product (in the category) on the shelves that is not UL approved. Actually in the old days, some products really were improperly approved, but that seems to be a thing of the past. I'm not sure how much law exists about selling devices that are not approved. Who to enforce anything ? If the UL saw some of the things I did when I was a kid, they would probably fall over. Know those things in the old scifi movies with the arc traveling up two conductors going "Bzzzzzzap,, bzzzzzzzap. bzzzzap" ? I had one and it was extremely dangerous. I was running two transformers directly off the AC line, the second being pushed to eight times it's intended limits. It was enough to kill easily, and what's more if I left it running too long it would get so hot a fire would start eventually - actually not all that eventually. What if I sold one of thee things and the buyer fell asleep with it running ? So much for that house. Or apartment building, could you imagine the possible liability ? Now the FDA, well they're not quite on the ball, if they were there wouldn't be so many class action lawsuits against drug manufacturers. It seems though that there is enough money in the industry to support this folly ( money from where ? ). In fact I suspect that once a few suits have been filed, the industry itself instigates the class action lawsuits and probably pays for the advertising as well. This makes it alot more manageable. Then they get people to settle for structured settlements which costs them even less. Well worth a lawyer bill I would say. But that business, and business is business. it is a gamble, and there are real odds and pot odds. The winner know how to play. Play with our health and lives ? Hell yes, they couldn't care less if they died. T^T 1. I am an actuary by training, but I know that wasnt your point, lol. 2. the bolded is my main point. There were no laws that required UL approval, they weren't needed. They built a reputation of reliable testing and people just wouldnt buy an electric product or fire extinguisher that didnt have a UL seal. And that was 100 years before the internet was available to disseminate information about their standards.
