You think we're getting alot of that work ? Are you kidding ? They took the mass markets away from us, you think they're just going to give them back ?

Nice thing is that China took it from them. Who is next ? Eventually it might just come back around.

Term, oh yeah, China and Japan are very protective about their manufacturing base but the pols tell us we shouldn't be? We should be too!
A lot of Japans refineries appear to have been destroyed, here's the chance to build 2 or 3 New ones on the West coast.
Japan will need gasoline and deisel fuel that's already been refined and ready to go. And the ships to get it there. And *MASSIVE* amounts of lumber that only the U.S. and Canada can supply. Basically they'll need everything!

And the fucking government will give it away so we can stay 10 trillion in debt. That's what motherfuckers do.

Never attribute to stupidity what can be traced to malice. The only thing I don't get is what the fuck we ever did to them, and what the fuck we are going to do to them eventually when people wake up.

American people are free to give what they want and are very generous. Why do we need the government to give money away for us. Its not like they have a great track record of the money they give actually getting to the people who need it.

Yeah the Marshall plan failed completely and all of Western Europe went communist.

Well, considering the political compass of some of the people on the far right here, that would be what happened.

Well, in a case like earthquakes, tsunamis and other natural disasters I certainly don't mind helping to get a country back on it's feet.
But after six months to a year or so when housing is being built, there's fresh water widely available and everyone's being fed and clothed *our job* is done and it's up to that individual country to handle things. And certainly Japan will!
"Foreign aid", the long term, institutional kind simply doesn't work. All it does is foster dependance and underwrites failure.
When I lived in New Hampshire I met a young woman who's uncle I knew. She was just back from some African country as a teacher with the "U.N."
She told me that she was there to teach *them* how to become teachers in a couple of small villages. She said she couldn't get them to do anything and told them that she wasn't there to teach but to show them how to teach. She said they couldn't "grasp that concept" and simply did nothing. She said she had to "round them up" each day from various neighbors who they were visiting.
She said she was just one in a long succession of teachers there and that there'd be more after her and those people knew that so why should they expend any effort which they didn't.
The third world is the third world and our govt shouldn't be wasting *our Taxdollars* on it.
When you have countries who have been on "foreign aid" for FOURTY YEARS you know it doesn't work.
If we help a country like Japan we *know* they'll be back on their feet again in a year or two.Hard work is ingrained in the Japanese people.
If we give money to a country like Haiti or other fourth world countries it's like giving money to your deadbeat brother-in-law who's down and out and living at your house and getting him off the couch at noon time to go look for a job is a major ordeal. Oh, and you'll never see the money again! It simply "vanishes".
I don't want my govt even involved in this type of thing in the first place!
Add to that "Foreign Aid" is probably the most corrupt govt program going! The stealing starts right away on K Street by the lawyers and lobbyists and ends up with the "Exhaulted Rulers" in those countries hiring private jets for multi-million *dollar* shopping trips to London and Paris!
Imagine if you were a lobbyist and your firm was hired by a third world country to steal the Taxpayer's money and you got $500 m which is nothing? You could get a $100m "commission" for you and your firm just by playing golf with and "schmoozing" with some congressmen!
Nice "work" if you can get it eh?
But of course,....."it's for *the CHILD-ren!!!"
There's simply too much corruption and graft involved in it.
Also, it's simply not the job of U.S. Taxpayers to ensure the survival of foreign countries.
They survived *before* foreign aid didn't they?

Nice try, but as usual democrats don't tell the full story. Being from Oklahoma I am extremely familiar with Senator Coburn and his ideas that we are mortgaging our children's future. Sen. Coburn only blocks spending when they refuse to cut somewhere else to pay for it, and you know as well as I do, there are plenty of areas to cut such as planned parenthood, and NPR, that have no business being taxpayer funded.

Obviously Haiti needed help, but Japan is one of the most prosperous nations on the planet. It wouldn't bother me a bit if we didn't send a dime. Besides, they have built and probably will continue to build nuclear power plants in an earthquake zone. How smart is that?

Disaster aid I'm okay with, but the money we throw every which way is totally unacceptable. Take care of your own home first.

Exactly how much are you proposing Obama force our grandchildren to borrow from China to give to Japan, any way?

We arent just broke, jlf. We are deep, deep, deep in a hole. We have no money, what part of we are beyond penniless is so hard for you liberal spenders to understand?

Senator Tom Coburn (R, OK) blocked the bill that would have put $1.15 billion dollars available for Haiti that the US pledged after the earthquake in January.

The question is, will it happen again with Japan.

Foreign aid should be private.

You do realize the United States has received foreign aid as well?

Or maybe you don't.

The Marshall Plan was a far different time. We made far more from the aid we provided because we were a net exporter, and we profited far more from the creation/expansion of markets then we spent. We are now a net importer, we dont have much expectation of profiting economically from the aid, and we are in debt ourselves. "Borrow from China to give away to Japan" is pretty close to the reality of the situation.

LOL earthquake zone, how smart is that.........you might want to do a little reading on some other folks who do that.

In any case, as I mentioned, to fix shit up, they only need to snag a little of their nestegg that is invested in say America, cashing out to pay for fixing their own infrastructure, something we abhor doing here, and they enjoy doing there,  and then we will have some more jolly good times.

Well, at least Japan's problems are nature-made.  Our 'tsunami' was man-made, the epicenter of the quake being lower Manhattan..

I don't disagree wholly, but private citizens largely don't have helicopters needed for roof-top rescues, or aircraft carriers needed for offshore refueling.

Unless, of course, you want to volunteer to be our point-man at getting the plutocracy to open up their wallets and use their private "rich-man's toys" (not holding my breath on THAT one)

Senator Tom Coburn finally stopped blocking the bill that provided funding for aid to Haiti in March of 2010, which actually only provided 500 million of the 1.15 billion pledged. I can find no information on the rest of the funds.
