ORIGINAL: joether Does the action given to illegal immigrants, allow them the option of learning English (American-English to be exact), or is a requirement to gain this new status? If its an option that's one thing; if its a requirement, the folks in Utah will have to deal with 1st Amendment violation. Not making this stuff up folks. The reason is, that "...Freedom of Speech..." basically states a person is not forced to learn a language they do not want to learn, nor be penalitzed with prison/fines for not knowing. However, as I've always pointed on on this issue, a non-English speaker gains a number of advantages by taking up the language: Future Employment, Visiting Other States, Seeing Movies unaltered/dubbed, and many others. Oh don't be silly, it is not a 1st ammendment issue. Sure you are required to learn English if you want to stay. So what. You are not being forced as you have the option of going back to your country of origin. Furthermore you are not being denied the right to speak in another language.
