From that bastion of the GOP comes a law that would allow illegal immigrants to regularize their status and live openly.

I wonder what a certain spinach eater thinks of this.

Utah ? Utah in the US ?

This is news for sure, like if Klatoo and Gort were to actually show up. Maybe they did. To say the least, this is quite out of character.

A very surprising and positive bill, and from none other than Utah. Who the hell immigrates to Utah?

Does the action given to illegal immigrants, allow them the option of learning English (American-English to be exact), or is a requirement to gain this new status? If its an option that's one thing; if its a requirement, the folks in Utah will have to deal with 1st Amendment violation. Not making this stuff up folks. The reason is, that "...Freedom of Speech..." basically states a person is not forced to learn a language they do not want to learn, nor be penalitzed with prison/fines for not knowing. However, as I've always pointed on on this issue, a non-English speaker gains a number of advantages by taking up the language: Future Employment, Visiting Other States, Seeing Movies unaltered/dubbed, and many others.

It is quite surprising that conservatives in that state are choosing something very....liberal....in nature. I'm wondering if that will draw sharp rebuttals not from liberals outside the state, but from the GOP/Tea Party? As this bill completely undermines their efforts/wishs to deal with illegal immigration as inhuman and intolerant as possible.

Now that's the power of positive thinking - keep them working all year round. And for that, they don't even have to learn the language.

And as far as learning the language, YES they should have to. My ancestors did it and so did yours. That's the breaks.

Oh don't be silly, it is not a 1st ammendment issue.

Sure you are required to learn English if you want to stay. So what. You are not being forced as you have the option of going back to your country of origin.

Furthermore you are not being denied the right to speak in another language.

Maybe the reason he hasn't been posting for the last day or two is because his head exploded when he heard the news?

There's an old joke about the Dubliners playing a charity concert and some wag in the audience asking them to "do something Irish".
So they donned donkey jackets and dug up the concert hall's carpark...

Utah's guest-worker bill doesn't grant citizenship, of course, but in every other way it's exactly what national Republicans have derided as "amnesty." It would grant work permits to undocumented immigrants, and their immediate families, who pay a fine, clear a criminal background check and study English.

I can say if this is what the bill intends, then I am all for it. I can almost say with certainty that Pops would agree as well.

Have you ever been to Utah?

There was a reason that the Winter Olympics were held there a few years ago.

I guess the bill will be blocked by the Justice Department. Arizona example demonstrates the Federal Government assumes the states have no right to regulate immigration related issues.

This could be an interesting fight between the states and the Justice department. They are not granting citizenship. Just guest worker status.

My comment was actually a joke. Federal government would legalize everybody immediately: good for corporations.
They just pretend to restrict illegal immigration for PR purposes.

Good example:

Stating that Utah is "conservative" oversimplifies.  It is directed by the Mormon Church, and has several very odd quirks as a result.  One is that a sizable number of them have served two year missions overseas.  They've seen and interacted with foreign cultures.

The program itself sounds similar to Germany's gastarbeiten program.  The only surprising thing about the bill is that Utah - with typical Western pragmatism - tried to actually draft a workable bill instead of making a loud statement.

As I mentioned on another thread when the Utah issue came up, it is also similar to Bush's proposals that were shot down by the Republican Congress.

An excellent idea for two different reasons.

1. It will draw unwanted illegals to Utah. Let them pay for them
2. It will be fun fun fun watching Holders vain attempt to defend this law. "Well, yes, Justice Scalia, it in fact is our position that it is unconstitutional for Arizona to enforce federal immigration law, but it is constitutional for Utah to defy it"

I mean, really.
