no, overall length.  There's a really horrifying youtube video of a guy who caught one and literally roped the thing down with cord.  He has a two dollar bill next to it, so you can appreciate the size--it seems to be about 5-7 inches end to end.

the tarantula my truck hit out in Las Cruces--the body of it was about 5 inches and the legs made it a bit larger.  (mind you: it was an F350 Dualie Super Duty truck)  there were pieces of said tarantula in my grill.  Local firefighters were kind enough to hose it down for me.  ( we were teaching "decon" so I asked them to demonstrate on my work truck...)

Hmmm... I have seen some big tarantulas with 4-6 inch ab length, with leg length they got pretty big.
