ORIGINAL: popeye1250 Decades ago I was in the Teamsters and I have a brother who's in the Teamsters now for over twenty years. There was NEVER any violence by the Teamsters and if anyone says there is they get their fuckin' head cracked! I'm very "Pro-Union." I know, I know, how "Conservative" of me! Pops sure there have been cases of Union violence going back through the years. People do stupid things. My Dad wasn't in the union where he worked. As a foreman in their structure he was a company guy. The one time I remember them being on strike we had all 4 tires on one of our cars slashed overnight, twice. There was some other assorted petty nonsense towards others as well. But I do believe if you go back through history in this country most of the serious violence was committed by hired thugs of the companies. Such as the violence committed during the mine wars in West Virginia. I do believe that most of the talk about "cracking heads", "spilling some blood", "whatever it takes", is just rah rah rhetoric. It's not smart and really has no place in the discussion. But I still can't equate that with a DA making comments that Police should open fire on a peaceful unarmed crowd. Yeah, there was a hell of a lot of violence perpetrated against the coal miners in Va and W. Va. by the cos. and they fought back as well they should. They, and everyone have the right to defend themselves. Now what if this Asst. DA were a Democrat or Independant? How would that make it, "not as bad?" I have another brother who's a member of the Firefighter's Union. He's a Lt. on a large dept in the Boston, Mass area. My father was in the Firefighter's Union for 32 years. My mother was in the Telephone worker's Union. An uncle was in the Telephone worker's Union for 38 years and every few years he'd be on strike for a month or two. People need to look at the big picture here! Cities and towns all over the country are taking in MUCH less tax revenue due to this "global economy." Factories close and "offshore" and hundreds of people are layed off. Then small businesses close, then businesses that supplied the factories close laying off more workers and it's not just blue collar workers it's white collar workers as well. CNBC said we're entering a "double dip reccession." One commentator asked, "when did we get out of the *first* one? That "global economy-free-trade" crap doesn't work! Not for the working class and certainly not for the middle class that's been decimated! And it's *our own government* that has shoved this crap down our throats that noone wants due to taking money from the big corporations that have WAY too much influence over *our* government! So, what are cities and towns to do if they have much less revenue comming in? They can't give raises. The can't make payments on expensive health insurance policies for their employees. This "global-economy, free trade" crap is ruining this country. I just wonder how long it takes before we go from "recession" to "depression."
