Charles6682 -> Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 8:58:51 AM)

Here we are again in 2011 with yet another possible government shut down thanks to Republicans. This is history repeating itself all over all. When Republicans were in control of the U.S. House and Senate back in the mid 90's,they caused another government shutdown.

Its amazing when Democrats won the U.S. Senate and House back in 2006,they were able to get along well enough with then Republican President George Bush to avoid a government shutdown. Its clear the Republican can not govern properly anymore. They really are a threat to the United States of America.

Protesting nut suckers with signs in DC yelling shut it down
They will be the first calling for Obamas  head when it does, its his fault already

Archer -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 9:13:17 AM)

Cause?????

How about the real cause, Nacy Pelosi HArry Ried and President Obama REFUSED to even try to pass a budget during the last year they were charged with running things. So now you blame the Republicans, for the Democrats not doing the job they were sent to Washington to do. They refused to pass a budget because they were scared to have it effect their elections. This is left over business that Nancy Harry and Barrak were supposed to have done last year, if it shuts the government down the real blame lies right at their feet.

Lucylastic -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 9:20:54 AM)

I seem to remember filibusters and plain old obfuscation from the repub side,  was I dreaming?

Archer -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 9:30:59 AM)

The point is they sat in the power seat with a majority in both houses, as well as the white house all in the Democrat pocket.

They didn't even try to pass a budget, they spent their time on other things.
It's the one constitutional job the legislature is charged with and they didn't do it.
No budget, no need to defend spending during the mid terms.

FACT is the last congress didn't complete their job, they could have forced the issues and compromised then, while they still held the majority in the House. They CHOSE not to do it, they chose to wait for the deficit commission report that convieniently didn't get published until after the elections. (sure it's a coincidence).

What difference does brinksmanship today have compared to brinksmanship last September or October? Oh Political expediency and ability to lay the blame on someone else.

Lucylastic -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 9:43:53 AM)

There seems to be enough of that going around no matter what the "facts" are.
I can and do see that there is blame to be laid on both sides beside my obvious partisanship.
Why was there no talk to shutdown or an outcry about budget before now?
because of the deficit commission? how so?
Im asking you Archer because its a serious question not a facetious one.
Im looking for more insight, not an excuse to be ignorant( I can do that without help)

"The numbers are basically there," Reid (D-Nev.) said in a Senate floor statement. "But I am not nearly as optimistic -- and that's an understatement -- as I was 11 hours ago." "If this government shuts down, and it looks like it's headed in that direction, it's going to be based on my friends in the House of Representatives ... focusing on ideological matters that have nothing to do with funding this government," Reid charged. He said that the GOP was insisting on attaching riders targeting abortion and clean air regulations that should be dealt with in regular legislation. Story continues below "It's not realistic to shut down the government on a debate dealing with abortion," Reid said. "It's not fair to the American people."with video of Reid...just to point out that this is not a blog/liehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/07/government-shutdown-culture-war_n_846097.html

Archer -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 10:01:01 AM)

There was small talk about shut downs back in December before the Christmas break. Republicans had won the elections and felt they had a better chance of winning the position another way, rather than forcing a shut down they agreed to another (3,4,5th?) continuing resolution. But there were more than a few who thought we would have a Christmas Showdown. Democrats realized that having lost the house in the election that any lame duck stuff (and there was plenty of talk about it all over the news) would backfire. Timing for both sides was not there in December and thus far the Republicans have been accepting piecemeal cuts (which I thought was genius as a tactic) until now. They achieved more than the proposed cuts from the Democrat plan through this piece meal method. But continuing resolutions are not the way to run a government. Eventually they have to come up with a budget for real. Because it is almost time for them to start arguing about next years budget.

The position is simple Republicans owe their voters the hard line cuts in spending, (it is why they were elected) there is some support from their base to shut it down, and the timing is right, now that the election is far enough away to let the pain fade before votes are needed for reelection.

Republicans might just ruin it for themselves though if they play too tough on it, they gotta walk a fine line, because Obama has the ability to make the shut down hurt differnt constituents in different ways. He gets to decide who's essential and who's not and who gets paid and who doesn't. So it's a risky thing to shut it down for long.

RacerJim -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 10:02:40 AM)

If the government shuts down it will be Obama and the Dems fault for not having enacted a 2011 budget LAST YEAR like they were duty bound to do.

Archer -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 10:07:15 AM)

I'm cold on the planned parenthood cuts. My mom worked for planned parenthood and I'm not a republican but rather a libertarian so abortion is not a winning issue for Republicans with me. That said, the cuts to planned parenthood can be cast in both a cost cutting of help to a group that we can't afford to help, or it can be cast as an assault on abortion rights. Senator Ried of course goes for the assault on abortion trights angle and for more than a few republicans I'm sure that's an accurate motivation.

But truth be told there exist no programs that can be cut without someone screaming how it is an assault against them (someone) personally.
If money is cut someone is going to take it personally and as if you are stealing from them.

Lucylastic -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 10:07:46 AM)

Thankyou Archer, sincerely.
I understand somewhat more now, and look for more knowledge when given just as you just gave me.

mnottertail -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 10:08:06 AM)

They were not duty bound.  But I am glad to see you are not spewing the nonsense about constitutionally bound today. Sooner or later, we will get you up to speed on the stuff you should have learned in high school.

Cuts should be across the board.

And, at the risk of being flamed for this... the whales can wait.

Lucylastic -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 10:13:44 AM)

With all the other female rights issues being brought out around the states, the cutting to PP will of course be seen as a personal attack on women, but I do not wish to get into any arguments about abortion funding, because it is an issue I am hugely pasionate about and as Im  not american, it doesnt affect me in any way except mentally. I cannot argue from an objective POV.
If I were in the US as a citizen, I would be doing much more about it than I am now
I just heard several people just sigh with relief

I agree with this, I believe.  The cocydil being that while accross the board means in all areas to me, I do not think it serves the american people to do a mindless flat percentage.  30% from military at least.

flcouple2009 -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 10:22:50 AM)

There is enough blame to go around for everyone.  There are no innocent parties.

housesub4you -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 10:31:57 AM)

Why isn't cutting the military budget open to discuss with the GOP, why isn't cutting corporate welfare in the form of tax subsidies something the GOP will discuss, why is tax increases on the top 1% off the table with the GOP???????  It's only the POOR, WOMEN and the ELDERY they are making foot the bill so their Billionaire donors can keep all their wealth

It can't be all one way, that is not how it works,  Remember last week when the GOP wanted 31 Billion in cuts....Guess what they got it, and what did they do, SAY NOOOOOO...we never said that we want 36 billion in cuts and when they got that they said NOOOOOOO  we want 40 Billion in cuts.

So tell me, if they got what they wanted, how is it not their fault when they keep changing the their demands

I believe Pence stated the GOP point of view very clearly last night on FOX News

PENCE: Well, I don’t know if we’re checkmating. But we’re trying — we’re trying to score a victory for the Republican people, for — for the American — for the Republican people — trying to score a victory for the American people, not for the Republican Party. That victory is going to come in stages here.

Ahhh...yes the Republican people  and who are the Republican people????

Archer -> RE: Will Republicans cause yet again another government shutdown? (4/7/2011 10:42:52 AM)

The law says they are supposed to pass a budget by April 15 based on the president's budget request that is to be presented on or before the first Monday in February.
The law says if they do not pass a new budget then last year's budget remains in force by continueing resolution.

The budget rarely gets done by April 15 for implementation in October, but it rarely gets kicked down the road beyond December either.

So, having dispensed with:

Constitution
Duty

is there anything else, Jim?
