There are ways to convert cars to run on vegetable oil.

Only diesel cars and trucks, not gasoline.

I was thinking about a gas price thread, glad to see someone else was also.

Okay, here is some of the latest "gas price news":

- Chicago has some of the highest priced gas in the nation, with some stations posting gas prices at $5.40 a gallon, but one station in Orlanda is selling gas at $5.69 a gallon.

--Some Canadians are crossing the border to the United States to buy gas here, because gas is much cheaper in the United States than in Canada.

-gas prices continue to rise, and $6 a gallon gas will probably be a reality, by the summer.

--oil prices rose to $113 a barrel Thursday {today} in Asia, the highest price since 2008.

---President Obama has created a new task force to investigate gas prices.

---Offshore drilling is slowly making a comeback to the Gulf of Mexico.

Money.com has a great gas price webpage with a lot of interesting information: Gas Prices Webpage-money.com

Many people are changing and rethinking their driving habits, I know I am, are you?

You would have to convert the gas car to deisel first, then to vegetable... but it can be done.

Just how would you convert a gasoline car to diesel?
G.M. tried it most unsuccessfully...perhaps you know something that they do not?

Yes, I do, a great mechanic. Wouldnt be cheap, but it can be done. And, think about it, why would GM really provide this service and cut their own nose off to spite their face?

Your cite indicates that they put diesel engins into your vehicle they do not make a gasoline engine into a diesel engine.
G.M. tried to do that with the "dieselized" gasoline engines in their oldsmobile and cadillac line and all they got for their trouble was unhappy customers.

Because GM had cheap engines. Volkswagon had better success

When did vw try to dieselize a gasoline engine?

taz. Pretty good shadetree mechanic here. to convert diesel to gas you would have to do at least the following.

1. Replace the injection system as diesel requires a different type of system due to viscosity and vapor pressure differences.

2. Replace the ignition system. Gas uses spark plugs. diesel, due to it's less explosive buring, uses a different type of ignition.

3. Replace the pistons. Diesel engines typically run at a much higher compression ratio than gas.

4. Replace the cylinder heads (see #3).

5. The fuel delivery system (pump, filters, etc) is also different because of viscosity, water retention and corrosion potential differences.

It would be cheaper and easier to just put in a new engine.

Exactly what I said, Hill. It is doable... its just cheaper to replace.

Which gasoline engine, to your knowledge, will withstand 22:1 compression?

I was trying to simplify and be gentle. Some blocks might handle it but that's all. Rest of the engine needs to be replaced.

How would you hold the heads and the crank onto any gasoline engine block at 22:1 compression?
The studs needed to hold the heads and crank onto the block would have to be increased by half again in diameter. When you make the stud hole that much bigger there is not enough metal around the outside of the hole to hold the stud under load.

By the way thompson, a lot of diesels have ratios much lower than 22:1.

(from wiki)

Diesel engine:
In an auto-ignition diesel engine, (no electrical sparking plug—the hot air of compression lights the injected fuel) the CR will customarily exceed 14:1. Ratios over 22:1 are common. The appropriate compression ratio depends on the design of the cylinder head. The figure is usually between 14:1 and 16:1 for direct injection engines and between 18:1 and 23:1 for indirect injection engines

Some older high performance engines from American muscle cars went up in the 13:1 range so the blocks could handle lower comp diesel.

It's still totally impractical.

I'm not. I'm trying to gently explain to taz why it shouldn't be done even if it is possible.

Face it, a LOT of things are possible but really stupid ideas LOL

To dieselize a gasoline engine implies that the finished product will have a useful lifespan and do significant useful work.
It is possible to make a gasoline engine run on diesel but it will not do significant usefull work nor will it have a useful lifespan.

Hill was merely entertaining the possibility of such a venture in good detail in the process of explaining the lack of feasibility of same venture ...
