You really don't understand the difference between a hijab and a burka do you?

Where in the bible does it say you shouldn't have electricity?  You want to make the Amish wire up?

There are Christian sects where the woman do not cut their hair and wear full length dresses and sleeves to the wrist.
Would you care to quote me those bible verses?  You want to make them get pixie cuts and blue jeans?

I could less except for the complete coverage part. How are we to know it isn't an armed man under there? What about hiding a bomb? Can a car be driven safely while so covered? I know of at least one US case where a muslim woman demanded to be allowed to wear the niqab, full face veil, for her DL and actually drove while so attired.

France has long been a secular state and because of all the troubles historically attributable to religious conflict has made several laws to formally establish itself as such, the most fundamental one being enacted in 1905. The ban on wearing of yarmulkes, burqas, or large crosses in public schools in 2004 was enacted as an application of this law. This latest law is just extending application of the 1905 law further, and in line with the 2004 law.

France has a history of an overbearing state stretching back to the 1700s when France produced and exported all sorts of goods, and the state syphoned off huge swathes of income in the form of taxes (it probably stretches back well before).

This isn't about securalism; it's about power.

Edited to add: the debate raged among our politicians for all of one minute here, and the conclusion drawn is that it would be unEnglish to tell people what to wear. Quite right, too.

Isn´t the whole issue rather one of our western societies is not compatible with the violent medieval religion of Islam. I do find it amusing, or might be more scaring, hearing clerics from that religion advocate things like death to unfaithful people and homosexuals. Right at this very moment there is a mullah who wants to come and preach exactly that to Muslims in my country. It is perfectly true that we have freedom of religion entrenched in our constitution, but the same constitution also say that organizations who preaches violence is to be banned. To my knowledge, when you can stand in our main squares and demonstrate screaming “death to Israel and the Jews” you have grossly violated exactly that. They often say that it is only a minority, who have those views, but I rarely see any of them actively trying to stop them. Only when pressed, in a debate, would they say that. I hardly find it credible. I still remember their reaction to 9/11. Most of them seemed to approve the act. I am actuately sick to death over them and wish we never had allowed them in to our soceity and can´t wait to have the lot kicked out again.

ya you would be stupid enough to give out that information.. now assume the position in one of your pictures and shut up

Ouchies! Touchy today aren't we? Do you always react with such hostility when ppl are a little different? Walking out the front door into a world full of diversity must be such a challenge for you......

Perhaps asking your doctor whether some tolerance pills would help ..... or just broadening your horizons .... or opening your mind. Diversity doesn't bite yanno - some us even like it. People who manage to shed their phobias invariably feel better for it. You ought to try it.

Well a survey in my country based on Muslim men aged 18 - 30 showed that 48 % of them believed in the Khalifat. Muslim worlddominated rule with sharia law as the rule. I don´t really see much difference in that and "The Third Reich" as proposed by that little german gefreiter named Hitler. Both are equally sick. The truth is they hate us with a vengeance and everything we stand for. If you are in doubt, just try and stay in a Muslim dominated country for a while and see for your self how much respect you get for our western views.

Country with a backbone or racist?

What they're most likely doing is using face covering as an excuse to harass law abiding citizens. Maybe trying to send a message. One problem with that (there are a few) is it may be sending the wrong kind of message.

It's okay for us to be different, just not you.

I vote racists.

Added: It may also be that in doing so they are trying to force back what they perceive as an oncoming tide. Really just unwarranted fear as far as I'm concerned.

..........Did You know that here some DEMANDED to be allowed to wear those things for their drivers licence picture as well as Medical cards,

and yes i did see a young girl scream (5 6 yrs old)when she saw one of those women with a burqa,

So what happened? Are they allowed to wear them for their driver's licenses?

Kids get scared of all sorts of things, but I don't think outlawing the trappings of someone else's religion is the best way to rear children.

For the record I have mixed feelings about covering from head to toe, BUT they are simply my feelings. If a woman is wearing it freely of her own volition, you go sister!! In terms of ID cards taking a picture of someone covered is pointless.

So is it OK to you to outlaw the clothing of any religion? I think it has to be all religions or none.

I have to wonder if the same argument would be made if it were the MEN who wanted to dress in a manner that covered their faces in the name of religious freedom. I suspect many people would change their tune.

Face it. The world climate forces us to be able to identify that. And yes, the safety of the masses is worth the insult to a couple thousand.

I spent my teenage years in Bradford. In one year in my school I was one of two white kids in my class, the remaining 30 were all Pakistani, and Muslim. I have worked with Muslims and I have spent time in Baku, Azerbaijan.

As you can see I still have a head on my shoulders, I am still alive, I have not been blown up, taken hostage, or indeed suffered in any way as a result of contact with Muslims.

I see a problem with freedom of expression, but the French have their own ideas about that.

I do remember a story an old landlord told me though, from before he came to the US from Afghanistan. His family had a grudge with some dude, so his brother put on one of Mom's hefty bags, and had him drive. The other dude had never seen the landlord (who was 14 at the time), and thought nothing of it when a car pulled next to him. At least, until the woman in the hefty bag brought up a gun and blew him away.
