This hits politics AND religion.

What do you think?

Was Jesus a liberal?

Why or why not? Please folks, documentation, not made-up bluster.

By the way, as background, I'm agnostic but I feel he was a heck of a moral person and a GREAT role model.

He certainly wasn't a republican with his pay your taxes, feed the hungry, take care of the poor, look after the children talks.

Really, Flco? I seem to recall that he told PEOPLE to do things for the poor, not that they should have government do it for them.

Not much in the form of Democratic representative government back in his day though, heh Rich?Well not in Judea anyway.[:)]

Hillwilliam -> RE: Was He a Liberal? (4/12/2011 6:47:53 PM)

I'm going to weigh in on the yes side.

The loaves and fishes tale could be said to be "redistribution of wealth"

He rejected Xenophobia "The parable of the good Samaritan"

He personally helped the downtrodden and sick even lepers.

He rejected "Organized Religion" Matthew Ch 24.

He rejected misogyny. (allowing a prostitute to serve him in a nonsexual way) "service bottom?" LOL

He was an agent of social change.

The "Conservatives" of his day were the ones who prevented Pilate from pardoning him.

TheRaptorJesus -> RE: Was He a Liberal? (4/12/2011 6:50:19 PM)

It's easier for a triceratops to walk through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven.

slvemike4u -> RE: Was He a Liberal? (4/12/2011 6:50:39 PM)

I'm going to go with a "yes" on this one too.For all of the above reasons.....and the long hair thing too [:)] Certainly not a conservative.

Lucylastic -> RE: Was He a Liberal? (4/12/2011 6:56:27 PM)

He put people before profit, He didnt have a gun, and he didnt like the rich or corrupt,  he wasnt interested in war and didnt  only care about america

slvemike4u -> RE: Was He a Liberal? (4/12/2011 7:06:12 PM)

That is so not fair.....had he known about America it would have definitely been at the center of all of his sermons [:)]

He didnt have a gun

He told his followers that if they didn't have a sword, they should sell their clothes to buy one.

slvemike4u -> RE: Was He a Liberal? (4/12/2011 7:20:20 PM)

Really? In what sermon ? To what purpose was he advocating this?

Mixed Messages on Swords

Luke 22

35And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

36Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

37For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

John 18

10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

11Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

Matthew 26

51And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.

52Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

See that last...."Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword."

What's the difference? The principle's the same. People need to help each other out and care for other members of their community.    Why split hairs?

TheHeretic -> RE: Was He a Liberal? (4/12/2011 7:34:42 PM)

Luke 22:36, Mike (or so Google sayeth).

I think I'm just gonna bail on this thread, though. Jesus was far too complicated a figure to pigeonhole into a modern, binary, paradigm, and I spent enough of my life observing how his words can get twisted to mean anything people want.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Was He a Liberal? (4/12/2011 7:40:21 PM)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and make some theoretical statements about the Disciples going armed.

The rural middle east of 2100 years ago (Jesus's stomping grounds) was a fairly lawless place. An unarmed group walking down the road would have attracted bandits like flies to poop.

A dozen or more armed men, though, would have been left mostly unmolested. I think Jesus may have been encouraging his men to be openly armed because he WAS a pacifist. I know, it sounds wierd but if you look at the older schools of martial arts, Shao-Lin for example, they are pacifists. They will do about anything to NOT fight therefore they are not "living by the sword". The sword in this case is ONLY a last resort and is used as a deterrent.

If you refuse to initiate an attack and you look too strong to be attacked, you will NEVER get in a fight. That is the dream of a pacifist, to never fight.

Thats why I started it, it IS complex. So far, I like the thought that is going into the replies here. Even a hard core atheist about has to admit that the dude was a heck of a role model.

Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. (Col 3.11)

Fightdirecto -> RE: Was He a Liberal? (4/12/2011 7:48:21 PM)

WELL, JESUS WAS A HOMELESS LAD
WITH AN UNWED MOTHER AND AN ABSENT DAD
AND I DON'T REALLY THINK HE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN THAT FAR
IF NEWT, RUSH AND SARAH HAD FOLLOWED THAT STAR
SO LET'S ALL SING OUT PRAISES TO
THAT LONG-HAIRED, RADICAL, SOCIALIST JEW

OH, WHEN JESUS TAUGHT THE PEOPLE
HE WOULD NEVER CHARGE A TUITION FEE
HE JUST TOOK SOME FISHES AND SOME BREAD
AND SERVED UP FREE SCHOOL LUNCHES INSTEAD
SO LET'S ALL SING OUT PRAISES TO
THAT LONG-HAIRED, RADICAL, SOCIALIST JEW

OH, HE HEALED THE BLIND AND MADE THEM SEE
HE BROUGHT THE LAME TO THEIR FEET
YEAH, RICH AND POOR, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE
JUST PIONEERING THAT FREE HEALTH CARE
SO LET'S ALL SING OUT PRAISES TO
THAT LONG-HAIRED, RADICAL, SOCIALIST JEW

WELL NOW, JESUS HUNG WITH A LOWLIFE CROWD
THOSE WORKING STIFFS SURE DID HIM PROUD
YEAH, SOME WERE MURDERS, THIEVES AND WHORES
BUT AT LEAST THEY DIDN'T DO IT AS LEGISLATORS
SO LET'S ALL SING OUT PRAISES TO
THAT LONG-HAIRED, RADICAL, SOCIALIST JEW

WELL NOW, JESUS LIVED IN TROUBLED TIMES
THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT WAS ON THE RISE
OH, NOW WHAT COULD HAVE SAVED HIM FROM HIS TERRIBLE FATE?
THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE
SO LET'S ALL SING OUT PRAISES TO
THAT LONG-HAIRED, RADICAL, SOCIALIST JEW

YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES I FALL INTO DEEP DESPAIR
WHEN I HEAR ALL THOSE HYPOCRITES ON THE AIR
OH, BUT EVERY SUNDAY GIVES ME HOPE
WHEN PASTOR, DEACON, PRIEST AND POPE
ARE ALL SINGING OUT THEIR PRAISES TO
SOME LONG-HAIRED, RADICAL, SOCIALIST JEW

THEY'RE ALL SINGING OUT THEIR PRAISES TO
SOME LONG-HAIRED, RADICAL, SOCIALIST JEW

AMEN

I need to just get off this thread. There's no hope of it going well, but dammit, this needs to be answered.
