Many of us think that Boehner got rolled in the latest budget deal. The Rs stood firm neither on the numbers nor on principle. I expect this summers recess to be more than hot enough to stiffen some spines further. Tea Parties and primary opposition (and, make no mistake; any R who votes for this should be replaced) will certainly have a beneficial effect on the 2012 budget...

The latest CBO report is going to piss off a lot of Conservatives. I think this bill will pass with a greater percentage of D support than R; Boehner should probably just resign and save what little face he can.

CBO scores the 2011 budget fix

It is irresponsibly premature to accuse the conservatives (rinos, republicans, neo-cons, and nutsuckers) of fiscal responsibility now or at some future time; simultaneously, it is irresponsibly inaccurate to accuse them of fiscal responsibility in the past.

It does not matter, because ohhhhh so many years ago we where told the national Debt would be paid off in 10 years.  Gee i wonder why no one inthe GOP mentions this when they talk about how tax cuts for the wealthy pay for themselves

To Quote G. Bush

My budget has funded a responsible increase in our ongoing operations. It has funded our Nation’s important priorities. It has protected Social Security and Medicare. And our surpluses are big enough that there is still money left over. Many of you have talked about the need to pay down our national debt. I listened, and I agree. We owe it to our children and our grandchildren to act now, and I hope you will join me to pay down $2 trillion in debt during the next 10 years. At the end of those 10 years, we will have paid down all the debt that is available to retire. That is more debt repaid more quickly than has ever been repaid by any nation at any time in history.

Of course, the opposite occurred, with debt held by the public increasing from $3.5 trillion to nearly $6 trillion and gross federal debt going from $5.6 trillion to nearly $10 trillion. In fact, conservatives argued in 2001 that the very existence of a budget surplus was a valid reason to enact large, regressive tax cuts. But this is precisely what happens when you have an administration that believes “deficits don’t matter.”

I guess we could go with the alternative, vote Obama again and hope he really REALLY means it this time when he promises to balance the budget

Or perhaps it could be a WAR the American people where lied to about, you know the whole WMD thing and perhaps the fact that the war was never in the national budget until Obama put it there.

Ahhhh....yes the battle cry of the GOP  9/11...9/11....we must all live in fear because we began a war against a country that had nothing to do with 9/11...I wonder why Bush never held the Saudis responsible, you know for all the terrorist that came from their country.  And don't you just love the fact while GOV of Texas he had Bin ladan stay at the Texas Mansion and got money from the Bin laden family for all his failed oil companies...Gee  facts facts facts....of that when the great Reagan was in office he sold all the weapons to the very people who attacked us...  Facts facts facts.... Dam thing about facts, no matter how to try to deny them they are still there

Dwight Eisenhower was last Republican President to preside over a balanced budget. He had a balanced budget in 1956 and 1957. Since then, there have been two presidents to preside over balanced budgets, LBJ in 1969 and Clinton in 1998 through 2001. During the last 40 years there have been five budget surpluses, all five were under Democratic Presidents: 1969, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001.

To clarify, congress authorizes the budget. Between 1955 and 1981 Democrats held majorities in both chambers of Congress. From 1981 - 1987 republicans controlled the Senate, while Democrats held onto the House and then regained the Senate while holding controlling the House as well from 1987 -1995.

So the question is misleading in that the president alone cannot balance a budget. Congress has authority over financial and budgetary matters.

One point that is often misunderstood is that the budget for a President's first year in office is set by the prior President. Thus the balanced budget of 1969 was due to LBJ's budget even though Nixon was president for most of the year.

Now, since Eisenhower, how many republican presidents balanced the budget again?

Neither LBJ nor Clinton balanced any budget. LBJs sleight of hand was to include Social Security surpluses which were off budget until then, and subsequently removed. And we all know now that Clinton never had a surplus, if you know what ">" means.

Damn thing about facts is, every Dem in Congress voted for war except Kucinich, and Bill and Hillary Clinton and Al Gore and John Kerry, Dick Durbin, et al all gave lengthy speeches describing Saddam Hussein as a serious threat

And now Obama is bombing Libya

DAMN those facts

It seems to me we have bigger issues in play here. It is basically end game: nobody (who matters) really does not  care about long term consequences. They just keep the game going as long as possible. As time passes it just gets harder and harder to continue.  I speculate the trend started some time 11 years ago. It would be naive to suggest Bush-Greenspan property bubble was a honest mistake.  Members of the  Congress are mostly ignorant, but the Presidents administrations know very well what they are doing.

Which is exactly why our only hope to stop Obamas runaway spending is the Republican House, why the Republicans were elected in 2010, unseating the shop til you drop Pelosi House

CBO: Budget deal cuts this fiscal year’s deficit by just $352 million, not $38 billion touted
Out of a $1.6 trillion budget deficit - and leftists tried to accuse conservatives of killing grandma before they got that

Ahhh...yes and the facts remain, the very people who supported the WAR under BUSH and called everyone traitors, supporters of terrorism who did not support BUSH all voted against military spending in the first bill with Obama as President...  So what changed???

The war did not....how does a party go from supporting a war for 8 years with not 1 no vote to every person in the party voting NO to support the very troops they sent to war when the person sitting in the Oval Office changes....The GOP has never explained their lack of support for our troops since Bush left office

When did I write anything like "Obama did not inherit the Bush recession"

Though the Dem congress had a hell of a lot to do with the Frank / Dodd housing market disaster.

Like, everything.
