So then, using your definition, murder can be a right.
i dealt with that one already. the premise is stupid. that involves a right to do what you want with another person. a right you do NOT have.

again, irrelevant. a right is not dependent on how it may affect you.

You are saying two completely different things. Which is it?

I beg to differ, as with the murder example. Someone may feel hey have the right to murder someone. Thats their "high", it makes them feel good.
you have the right to do what you want to yourself. not to another. thus the murder example is a poor attempt at a red herring.

How many people die each year because someone had the "right" to drink, and the "right" to drive?

Its far from a red herring... its reality.

Having the right to drink, and having the right to drive, does not mean you have the right to drink while driving.

Drinking, by itself, can only kill the person who is drinking.

no i am not. i have no right to do anything to you. i do have a right to do anything to me. if my doing something to myself affects you, that is irrelevant to the fact that i have the right to do it to myself. i may be subject to penalties due to the side effects of what i did to myself, but my doing it to myself is not where the wrong occurred. the wrong, if any is due to subsequent actions. entirely different things.

Again, I disagree. Many people have stumbled along the roads late at night, causing accidents and their own deaths, injuring other people. This is why public intoxication is illegal in most places. The drunk wasnt driving, the driver wasnt drinking, yet someone dies... sometimes more than just the drunk.

sad, perhaps even tragic. but about as relevant to the question as the babies dying of aids in uganda.

I think you're missing my point. Drinking alone wouldn't have killed someone else...drinking while walking around in the streets would. Actually, stumbling around the street sober would have the same effect as stumbling around the street drunk.

A person ingesting a substance categorically can not kill anyone else. What a person does under the influence of that substance can. It's a fine distinction but a necessary one.

You see it as irrelevant. I see it as very relevant. We shall have to agree to disagree.

Most people who are sober dont stumble.

What a person does after ingesting a substance is exactly what I am speaking of. You are trying to seperate the two. Splitting hairs isnt a distinction.. its splitting hairs.

HannahLynHeather -> RE: "A woman has the right to do what she wants with her own body" (4/17/2011 12:04:41 AM)

you are discussing the possible consequences of one's actions while under the influence of various substances. not one's right to ingest those substances. these are unrelated questions. the one is a question of wisdom and personal responsibility, the other a question of individual freedom.

Or maybe they'll ingest the substance, turn on their lava lamp, and listen to Dark Side of the Moon...

Or walk to a playground at 3 am.

No one is harmed and it becomes a great night to be alive.

You want the freedom to do as you please, yes?

You want the freedom to do as you please, yes?

You can't seriously be this dense.

The freedom to have dominion over what is put into my body. To make decisions for myself about what I deem safe for my own personal consumption.

No one is talking about lawlessness and freedom to do whatever you want except YOU. So stop.

Therefore crack should be legal.
Discuss.

I agree! I think I've just changed my mind.. now, I'm in favor of legalized prostitution. Regulate it, tax it, stop bogging down the legal system/law enforcement with busting hookers. Free them up to go after the real criminals.

{Spoken with tongue firmly in cheek}

Talk about dense. You need to read back a few pages and discover where I said I didnt give a flying fig what you did within your own home.

Now, when did anyone give you the right to tell me what to do on a message board?

I do believe the only one who has that "right" is asleep at the moment since I hear him snoring.

Now, you do have the right to block me if you dont like what I post. Otherwise... [:D]

Have at it sweetcheeks. But dont complain when others tell you no. You made that decision. You pay the consequences. Sadly, someone else may pay them too.
